Midian agrees to do what he can, and makes his way back to the door the two figures entered earlier, cautiously approaching with an eye open for trap or ambush, and then opens the door wide, calling out, "Alus Treesinger. I am just looking for Alus Treesinger. Your family is concerned about you. I have been hired to find you. Have you been wounded? Hurt? Please, show yourself and speak to me. I have a message they wanted me to deliver." Midian bluffs, attempting to catch them offguard with an unexpected sort of pursuer - a hired contractor from Treesinger's family. Whether Alus is one of the two, Moonson may be more likely to openly engage such a person, or if Treesinger is one of them, a mention of his family might prompt him to break ranks. While it's possible Alus has no living family, or won't care, it seems a better ruse to stall for time than openly identifying himself as a church investigator. "If you know of Alus, please, just tell me what you can. The boy is very special, and I've been paid good money to see him returned safely."
Midian gains some experience even though he both failed and succeeded.
]
Midian steps around the corner and begins his attempts to delay the pair.
He approaches the doorway where he last saw them, cautiously speaking his words of deception and gets about forty feet from it when a young-sounding voice responds.
"My father sent you?" the voice asks, sounding a little suspicious.
Then another voice, an older voice, says, "Do not believe him, Allus, it is an evil play on your sentimentality made by a devious mind."
Midian moves back, possibly placing himself outside of line of sight with his back pressed to the side of the doorway, and takes the Dodge action.
"Your father wants you back, Alus! That's all I'm concerned about here. Come out and come with me, and I can say I found you alone. You won't have to answer any questions about this man. I just need to see you returned safely, please," Midian calls out, believing he was more successful in reaching Treesinger than in fooling Moonson, so he pokes at the weaker link.
Please login and look at this rough tacticalmapI have created on the World Anvil site to see Midian's position at the start of his turn. If you can't see it, please let me know. If the link doesn't work, then it should be visible on the right-hand side of the home page once you have logged in.
The streets are marked out with 5' squares and the black rectangles in the blocks that represent buildings are recessed entrances to those buildings. Midian last saw Basilly at the guard station in the bottom left-hand corner, but doesn't know exactly where he is at the moment because he is out of sight around the corner.
Also, if you read the previous moves, you will see that Midian didn't get to the entrance way before he was attacked and is therefore still about 40' away from it at the start of his turn.
Midian can also roll for experience for his failed Perception check because he currently cannot actually see either of the two people he was following, though he is pretty sure he knows where they are hiding (i.e. in the top-most darkened entrance of the building on the left-hand side of the street).
With his correct position in mind you can describe Midian's movement in terms of up–down, left–right on the map and I will update this map during combat and add new markers to indicate friends and foes when/if it becomes necessary.
Please let me know if you need more description of the encounter map.
OOC: I created a World Anvil login previously but I have not had it logged in recently and I need to recall my login info. As the map is relevant I will try to get that sorted shortly. Apologies, just checking the game from my phone, I will try to take some time to get logged in there again to check the map soon, just a busy weekend, at present.
OOC: The map seems to show the Guard Station to the Lower Right, did Midian see Moonson enter the building to his right (east) or to his left (west)? I assume he was pursuing them while traveling north (up on the map)?
The action might be modified depending on which one of the buildings his targets went into. His general goal is to stall so Basilly can arrive, possibly with backup, as he has been warned about Moonson's spells and knows if Midian presents the sole target, Moonson may simply wipe him out with the Arrows of Arion, or even a barrage of long range cantrip spells. He will call out the bluff/ persuasion of 22, and will either:
1. If the enemy is in the "left" building, move and Dash Southwest (down and left) around the corner of the building, ending there one square just out of line of sight.
2. If the enemy is in the "right" building, move an dash north and then west into the western/left side building, also ensuring he ends of of line of sight/line of effect for spells, but positioned differently based on the enemy being in the building to the right of the map.
Knowing the layout, a move and dash to end out of line of sight/line of effect entirely seems more practical than a dodge action, as it deals with spell effects where dodging might not be material, such as vicious mockery, magic missile, etc.

[OOC: For the record, the right-hand side is actually north: the map has been rotated as landscape works best for this situation. Midian and Basilly entered the map from the right-hand side.]

There is no immediate response to Midian's words but then the younger voice says, "You say you come from my father. How can that be? He lives very far from here."

[OOC: Basilly's attempt to talk the guard into helping versus a DC of 5]: 18]
Out of the corner of his eye, Midian sees movement in the direction of the guard station and sees Basilly and at least one of the guards heading in his direction.
[OOC: It is now Midian's move in turn #2. See the updated map here.]
Midian motions for Basilly to join them, and remains planted. Rather than responding to the question meant to expose his real intentions, Midian feigns injury from the spell. "My... my mind! It burns! What did you do to me? What horrific devil magic is this? What have you gotten mixed up in, Alus? It burns my mind!" If Basilly can see him as he approaches, he might find amusement in the juxtaposition of Midian's deadpan expression with the dire words he shouts for the benefit of Treesinger and Moonson.
Midian dabs his face with a smear of dirt serving as "makeup," risking the Friends cantrip to apply advantage to Charisma checks, knowing in a few minutes the target will turn hostile, but more concerned with stalling and getting through the new few minutes, knowing they will be "hostile," regardless, once his deception is exposed.

If Basilly gets close enough this round to speak, he will inform him in a harsh whisper, "They're in there, Treesinger, the boy from the Occult School, and Moonson," gesturing with a thumb towards the building they entered. "He's used minor magics against me, meaning he likely has worse at his disposal. He's injured, likely from his earlier skirmish at the university, but I wouldn't count on him going down easily."

OOC: This probably means the action was wasted and the spell was not cast, I rolled as two separate rolls so only the first/lower need apply to reflect a “standard bluff” with some wasted time on a failed spellcasting, perhaps.
On thinking about this, Midian would be aware that makeup is a necessary material component for the Friends cantrip. The decisions about his Bardic spells were made in a hurry when you were determining what he was carrying on this mission. I have therefore added a component pouch to his equipment list, which I believe Midian would have included in what he was carrying.
Using the right material components lowers the DC for what he is trying to do to 5 and Midian's roll is therefore a success.
On the downside, please note this scene is all happening in dim lighting conditions with all the problems that raises. ]
Using magic, Midian modulates the sound of his voice so that it will have a greater appeal to the person with the younger-sounding voice. He then pretends that he was more badly hurt by the psychic attack than he was, hoping to induce a sympathetic reaction in the target of his own magic.
In response to his ploy, Midian hears the sound of raised voices coming from the doorway where Allus and Moonson are hidden.
Meanwhile, the guard and Basilly reach the corner on the opposite side of the street from Midian. They are too far away to confer in whispers, but Midian notes that the guard is savvy enough to keep out of line of sight.
[OOC: Make a Perception check, at Disadvantage due to distance, to see if Midian could work out what the argument was about.
Midian Readies an action to Move and Dodge, falling in with Basilly and the guard, if and when they advance. He is hopeful his distractions have been enough to delay the targets, and possibly sow some disarray, to better prepare the way for their assault.
From what Midian can hear, it would seem that the younger voice thinks he has gotten into something more than he bargained for and that he doesn't like the use of unclean magic. The conversation ends abruptly and Midian is unsure of the outcome. He then prepares himself to support Basilly and the guard if they move out from the corner.
Basilly and the guard start whispering to each other planning something, but that all comes to an end when a figure emerges from the doorway and begins moving down the street in Midian's direction. It is the shorter Stemian.
"Hello!" the younger man calls. "If you are truly sent by my father, I need your help to leave the city."
Basilly responds, urging the younger man to come to him for protection while trying to still stay hidden.

Midian once more uses his magically enhanced words to try to lure Allus towards himself and out of the line of sight of Moonson. The boy turns and looks at him uncertainly while Midian then tells Basilly and the guard he is ready to join them in their advance.
