[OOC: Round #9
Midian gains two lots of experience.
]
Leaving the dog-defended fence, Midian heads back to the entrance to the tailor's shop where he stops to try to convince the handleader that they are following up on a distraction.
At this point, Basilly and the first guard are still in the shop and Midian cannot see what they are doing. Allus and the third guard (there are only 3) are approaching at a walk. Midian has used his Move and only has 10' of his Dash left when he reaches the handleader. I will let him make his Persuasion attempt, but that will end his turn.
The handleader, a middle-age man of Sorian ancestry, has a stern and slightly confused look on his face as he listens to Midian's plea. As the man is feeling that his authority is being ignored and he doesn't know who Midian is, his Insight check to resist being persuaded will be at Advantage.
Handleader's Insight check: 17
Looking from Midian to the inside of the shop, the man nods and says, "I will come with you, sir. And while we're at it you can tell me who you are."
However, before Midian can say anything, he hears a male voice shouting from within the shop.
"Beware thieves, I have a sword and I know how to use it."
Then another voice says, "Basilly, get him out of here, I'll protect you."
"Sir," says Basilly, obviously trying to sound calm and in control, "this man is with the town guard. I am with the Temple of Donai. You must come with me. Your life could be in danger."
Edit: As the map is now relevant again, here's a link to the updated version. Ignore the positions of Basilly and the first guard in the shop, they are not accurate and Midian cannot see them.
Midian seizes on the Handleader's cooperation. "We will circle around to the other exit to the shop, to ensure Moonson does not escape by that route why we are occupied here," Midian says. "I am an apprentice Seeker with the temple, attempting to take in Moonson, a suspected cultist, for questioning regarding the murder of my mentor. If possible, we would like to take him alive. The creature in the entrance is likely a monster he conjured, or a familiar of his. He likely has other baleful magic at his disposal, so we must be very cautious. This is a dangerous man."
With the Handleader accompanying, he will move and dash around the opposite side of the building from is previous attempt, searching for another entrance to the clothing shop where Moonson is holed up.
Midian explains the situation to the handleader and then hurries off down the street.
As he runs, a sudden sharp sound causes him to look over his shoulder and he sees that the handleader is trailing behind, but is in the process of using a whistle, presumably to summon more men.
Midian also sees that Allus and his accompanying guard have continued to walk on and are now outside the tailor's.
The link(s) to the map no longer seem to be working, but Midian will continue moving around this other side of the shop to look for the alternate entrance/exit. He consults with the Handleader as they go, "If you know of the other exit to this clothing shop, lead the way, Handleader. I fear Moonson is making his escape while his creature harries the rest of our forces at the other entrance."
Midia dashes on, shouting over his shoulder to the handleader.
As he rounds the corner, Midian sees another guard exiting the guard station in response to the handleader's whistle. This one appears to be carrying a lantern.
The handleader shouts for this new guard to follow them and continues on after Midian.
[OOC: I am now going to drop out of combat timing to macro forward a little. I mainly maintained it to see where Midian would be in relation to Allus when the Friends effect wore off, which is not relevant now.
Also, although the map is now available again, we have gone well and truly off it, so for the moment we will use theatre of the mind.]
The three pursuers find their way into a service road at the back of all the shops, being led there by the newly arrived, lantern-carrying guard who is a female Stemian. As well as the lantern, the woman is carrying a light crossbow.
The service road is basically bordered by high fences with gates in them. There are a couple of the taller buildings where Midian can see the gleam of lights coming out from under closed shutters, which would tend to indicate that at least some of those buildings have occupants.
[Please make a Perception check for Midian for him to try to determine from the back which of these buildings is the tailor's]
Midian tries tor reason it out. "We didn't see any light from within the shop on the other side, so it's likely not one of the well lit ones," Midian says. If the door he selected is for a darkened building, and seems to be reasonably likely to line up with the shop they left on the other side, he nods, reaffirming his logic. "Why do you believe it is that one? Are you familiar with these shops? If so, we can proceed. How would you like to access it? I have been trained by the church in picking locks for occasions such as this, if you prefer a stealthier approach. If you think speed is the priority you could ram it."

The gate Midian believes is the right one is a two-storey building and he can in fact see the gleam of a light coming out from under the shutters of a window on the upper floor. However, the gate the handleader believes is the right one also shows signs of there being someone at home on the top floor. Also, the two gates under inspection are next to each other and Midian's door is the closest to the main street.
When Midian asks the handleader if he is familiar with the area, he says he is not. He then indicates that his fellow guard is and asks, "Okay, Lucinda. Which do you think it is?"
Lucinda looks at the both of you and then, without speaking, points at the gate that Midian has chosen.
A voice from above on the opposite side of the street from the suspect gates suddenly cries out saying, "Quiet out there, or I'll call the guard."
The handleader turns and replies angrily. "We are the guard!"
Silence reigns in the service lane for a moment after that.

I assume typically you would knock, and announce your intention to enter, before forcing your way in? I am fine with that, although if you prefer the element of surprise I could attempt to pick the lock." Midian states this flatly, without a hint of remorse, as he has made it clear he is a Seeker trainee, and assumes such a skill set can be rationalized accordingly.
The handleader thinks for a moment and then says, "We have the building surrounded, so normally we would call on those within to come out and give themselves up... However, as we do not know for certain which house it is... I will let you open the gate with your skills and then go and check that we have the right place. Lucinda can back you up while I stay out here in the road and make sure this Moonson person doesn't escape some other way."
Lucinda nods and gestures with her light crossbow, "I'll cover you... Don't worry, I am a pretty good shot."

Midian approaches the gate and examines the mechanism. He is left feeling a little confused. It seems to be a simple bar like the front door, so how do they open the gate from the outside? Both means of entry to the property can't be the same, otherwise the occupants would lock themselves out if they ever left.
He removes a slim strip of metal from his set of tools and eases it between two slats of the fence and lifts it easily. He pushes the gate and as he slips his tool back into his kit the gate swings quietly inwards revealing a small space containing little more than an outhouse and a small handcart.
Midian is about to lead the way in when the shutters of one of the windows above are suddenly thrown open and Midian sees the silhouette of a man.
"Stop!" the man cries and then more quietly, "Oh it is you guys. Any sign of our escapee? I can't find him in here."
It is the first of the guards who entered the shop.
Midian hears the handleader behind him curse and then the man says, "Search the place thoroughly, he might be hiding somewhere."

[OOC: Midian gains experience, and I am now going to macro forward again.]
Several minutes later it becomes apparent that the only people in the building are an old couple—a husband and wife who are the owners and operators of this tailor's shop. A search of the premises has also revealed no hidden basements or means of egress to the directly attached buildings on either side.
While the handleader and the Basilly try to calm the angry man—an old military veteran who apparently threatened the first guard and Basilly with his souvenir scimitar when he thought them thieves trying to rob his store—and promise to pay for the damage to his front door, Midian works out the mystery of the doors. The gate mechanism is a simple latch, which is obvious from the inside and Midian feels a little abashed that he didn't see this earlier. And it seems the only door on the property that can be locked from the outside is the backdoor to the building, and that has to be done with a padlock, which Midian finds, along with its key, on a small shelf just inside the backdoor.
Feeling annoyed that they seem to have lost their quarry, Midian makes his way through to the front of the shop where he finds Allus seated on the floor being watched carefully by the third guard. Allus now seems to be sporting a nasty bruise to his face, something he didn't have when Midian saw him last.
