"I never claimed to be a hero, dwarf," Halec says. "Heroes succeed, or they die. We 'died' in glorious battle, yes, for all intents and purposes. Then by inexplicable and irrational good fortune, we were given another chance. Two weeks isn't a long time, considering the amount of time needed for such a large scale evacuation. This is a chance to at least save some. Would you rather fall in battle - a second time, I might add - simply out of pride, condemning everyone in this region to perish? Or swallow your pride and save as many as you can? This isn't the adventurer in me speaking. This is the guild artisan. A practical man. A realist. This is beyond what we can do, pure and simple. I won't doom everyone in this region over petty pride. I would sooner admit to failure, and at least see a few live."
I hand halec my scimitar, "i can fight without weapons, here, take this"
Halec takes the single scimitar, shrugs slightly, "Better than nothing, I suppose, though without my signature enchanted hand crossbow, I'm somewhat less than formidable in battle."
"If any of you have some magical means to do so, then by all means," Halec invites the others. "As for mundane means vis a vis application of physics and engineering, I have flint and tinder, and ample oil, which burns quite well, all of which combined could make short work of a wooden door. Among my gear, that is, which is beyond the door, or so I'm told. So it seems either one of you can magic this door open, or, we had best warn Central City and the surrounding boroughs to begin evacuation immediately."
Neil looks at Halec and gives him a firm slap across his face "Snap out of it! Snakeskin Valley is at stake, if you keep moping, we m-" two shadows of thieves come into view. "Uh-oh, uh... quick, in here" he pulls out a hidden door in the wood and shoves everyone in. The room is crammed, dark, and everyone is squished together tightly. Through a hole in the wall, two thieves, much like the ones accompanying Slough, can be seen turning the combination (make a perception to see it) of the vault, once it opens, both thieves each throw a backpack into the vault before sealing the vault once again and leaving.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.

**Are everyone's Hit Points accurate on their sheets? I know you all TPK'd and then woke up in a cell, so I'm not sure what that leaves everyone at.**
As they travel through the library, Jahren notices Neil accidentally knock over a book. He'll pick it up and read the title, either pocketing it if it sounds interesting or putting it back where it was. Either way he doesn't want fallen books to reveal the path of the cell escapees.
As Halec describes the odd fact that, as important as their mission is, no one seems to actually care much or want to help, Jahren ponders the subject. "In my travels I have noticed that many will not accept that which disagrees with their sensibilities until absolutely forced to." "May you heroes succeed such that they are never forced to face the realities of this particular horror. Better to let them live with their current beliefs than perish with the harshest of lessons. That is the luxury heroes provide the rest of us, is it not?"
As the party struggles with their wounds from their near death experience, Jahren comments "I find positive thoughts of such things as finding our belongings, your eventual defeat of Slough and even the joys of a successful quest and return home to be uplifting when my body would be done with me for the day otherwise." He attempted to secretly mutter the verbal components of Aura of Vitality. Stealth: 16
If the DM doesn't describe any interruption over 1 minute and allows it....in order of casting rounds...
OOC: Were were TPKed but I believe the DM noted at some point were were restored to 1/2 max HP. The 20 HP healed takes Halec to 49/58,, noted on his character sheet, thank you.
-Assuming this bit of conversation takes place at a time other whim then when they are in stealth observing the thieves.-
Halec becomes a bit philosophical at Jaren’s remarks. “Maybe there is something to that. For common folk, it’s hard to imagine change, much less sudden catastrophic change. Even people like the witch or the mayor, people of power and influence, may have a hard time breaking out of their business as usual routines. Even when they know their own actions literally imperil their future and their survival, they maintain their status quo, out of comfort or fear of change perhaps. Maybe heroes are just people who recognize the need, the urgency, and compel change in the world where others would continue to go through the motions of mundane life until the end comes. Still, heroes can’t do it alone. Everyone must recognize the threat to the world, and do their part to help prevent its destruction.”
Right now, the coast is clear with no guards in your sight, the vault is shut and locked tight.
Once everyone exits the secret room, Neil slaps Anthony much harder than he did Halec, then gives him a short lecture of --somewhat-- motivation "Are you crazy or something? You really would watch the kingdom crumble into oblivion then do something about it, shame on you! When the kingdom turns into a ravine, who's the one to blame, yourselves! Because the two of you decided to give up when we just saw two thieves put in the f***ing combination. Hope is not lost, we still have a fighting chance, as well as a healer now" he directs at Jahren "
"Ah, excellent, they showed us the way" remarks Jahren after the guards depart.
The half-elf moves out in front of the vault door and pauses for a moment, tilting his head at it, just taking a second to consider any traps that the guards had to disable first.
After a second he steps forward and mutters another word in elven to himself. With a flourish he casts Detect Magic to check for more traps and help him see anything interesting as they move into the vault.
"Shall I?" Jahren reenacts what he just saw the guards do, entering 32-26-49. Jahren replies to Halec "or perhaps the help you seek simply comes from somewhere other than where you expected it?" He then shoves vault door open.
(this is of course assuming he doesn't find any mundane or magical traps)
I glare at Neil with an inhuman rage "I can't let this kingdom fall into a ravine, I swore to protect it. This man wants to quit, so let him. I will carry on to the end. But let Halec the Drunkard remember, when he leaves now, i keep his mule." With that I stand up, The bloodlust showing in my eyes, my singed beard causing me to look as if i am wreathed in flame.
I grab a chair and break off a leg to use as a club.
Iturn to jahren, "lead on, i will follow you until my death, or the quest is completed."

The vault is completely free of traps, inside the vault is a treasure trove of several things; gold, silver, iron, weapons, even magic items are stuck in the mix. Laying at the front of the pile is your things. Halec's things lay in one pile, Anthony's in another, Ophiwalyn's stuff in a third, and the last pile contains the things of Chazrael (Jahren happens to still have all his items.) to the left of the door, right in front of the pile, is two stone statues, one looks exactly like Helen, the other looks exactly like Abomination, both are even their same sizes.
I see the poor yeti petrified, and like a mother bear i am enraged. I let out a scream of rage, and gather my gear "I will be back," I say "after i slay every damn robber in this place!!!"
I also grab halec's invisibility potion "You won't be needing this" I say with near insanity in my voice, I then run off searching for the thugs and the wizard.

Halec reclaims his items, then noticed the statues. “This... This cannot be. Did they petrify our animal companions? Lady Helena Constance Muleworthy? I always joked about having a statue done in your honor, but this... this is too cruel! And absurd! What sort of men are these? They throw us into flimsy cells and petrify our beasts? This is madness! The library is a madhouse and the inmates are running it. And also evidently terrifyingly powerful magic users.”
"He does not want to quit. Doubt it to be expected after failure, but failure is also part of each of our stories. Count a man with no failures as either a liar or a fool. Judge Halec by the choices he makes, not by his fears. He is still here, and his story's conclusion has yet to be written."
Jahren says all this calmly and happily while perusing the vault, examining any magic items with his Detect Magic spell active.
Of his gear, one notable and fine item is a large stringed instrument on his back, a bit like a guitar.

When Neil refers to Jahren as a healer the half-elf simply touches his chest and looks puzzled as if to say "who, me?" (you'll find he's... modest)
OOC: I was carrying on the quest, anthony was angered by halec's giving up.
I follow jaren, ki points and all.
