Bones relates these details to the others. Hearing of Talinian's discovery with the mage's hand, he turns to the tiefling. "Have you seen anything like that before?"
Did one or both of the wooden chests get opened before the Mage Hand got sucked in? Still open or did the lid close when the Mage Hand was sucked in? If at least the one chest is still open Gorm will tie a knot into the end of her rope and toss it towards the open chest looking to see if it somehow sucks everything down into it or maybe just the Mage Hand?
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Talinian raises an eyebrow as the spectral hand disappears in a flash. "Interesting. Well, let us try the other." He summons another mage hand and uses it to open the second chest. As it moves to the chest, he says to Bones, "I do not think so but I will think on it. I suspect it was a trap, likely magical, designed to draw the opener into the chest, at least the hand."
Arcana 14 (does Talinian have any ideas?)
He watches carefully to see of the second magical hand receives similar treatment.
Just one chest was opened. Yes the lid is still open. You toss the rope in and is drops to the bottom of the chest.
The same events happen with the second chest as the first.
With Talinian's roll I would say that you're unfamiliar with this specific type of magical trap but you have heard of magical traps before, and can tell that this is one of them, you are just unsure about how this one works.

Gorm warily approaches the chest that part of her rope is in. She'll keep hold of the rope, wary to see if there is any tugging at it or such... She'll pause when she is close enough to lean forward to peer inside the chest from a bit of a distance.
Bones, seeing as Talinian doesn't have any ideas other than magical trap, starts to say "In that case I could cast a spell to detect magical energies on..." when Gorm reaches into the chest.
I will say with Bones detect magic you would learn the spell itself.
One chest is trapped, the left one. A creature that opens a chest sees only impenetrable darkness within. A creature who stares into the darkness must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed saving throw, they are charmed by the chest. A charmed creature wishes to reach its full body into the chest. Each round make a new Wis check, DC +1, round 1 hand is in, 2 arm, 3 head and chest, 4 whole upper body, 5 legs, 6 feet and death. The chest acts as a sphere of annihilation; any creature that opens and reaches into it is instantly obliterated
I'm a touch confused. If trapped chest, is that the one that sucked in the Mage Hand? If so, did sucking in the Mage Hand dispel or end the trap? 'Cause that is the chest that Gorm tossed her rope into and eventually was feeling about...
(OOC - yeah, I'm with Kaem on that one. Gorm had thrown the rope into the chest opened by the mage hand, as the other was still closed, then reached in.)
Not that I am looking to have Gorm have to make saves or be annihilated but it is what it is...
Also at what point is one annihilated? First it seems like if they totally crawl in... But the last sentence just kind of sounds like all they have to do is reach in.
To answer the crossed out questions, my understanding is it's a rising DC challenge. There are further notes about strength checks to help pull the person out, but that was not part of the spell.
"Before we continue, does anyone have any thoughts on the figures I mentioned in the next room, especially the one with the ghostly glaive in its hand?" Bones says after the chests have been opened and contents examined.
(OOC - and so both chests were empty upon inspection after triggering the traps?)

"Huh," Gorm will mutter. She'll gather the rope back up and approach the chest. She'll feel around it for false bottoms or such...

Are both chests trapped?
Tandor the White, Human Life Cleric
They were both magically trapped. Both traps were activated by the mage hand and are now normal chests.

Correct on the chests. Also it's not just one ghost with a glaive there are 10 of them.
