This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Davik clocks the signs and symbols along the way, and considers what this means in the light of the bloody-scene a few blocks away. He makes a mental note to raise it all with the rest of the group when there’s a suitable chance. For now, it’s show time...
(at the appropriate point in the timeline) Davik wonders into the tavern talking naturally and laughing with Duncan about The Pits.
As they walk past Jade/Even, he will pretend not to know him but he will throw an offhand comment his way in the manner of a normal insensitive bar patron: “Alright. Cheer up, fella, it might never happen!”.
Without waiting for a response he will usher Duncan naturally to a prominent table and call to the barkeep “Two cups, when you’re ready... and one for yourself”.
He’ll then continue to chat with Duncan about The Pits, in an attempt to add an obvious and loud air of normality to the bar. He’ll place a couple of silver on the table in front of him, and await his drink.
(OOC: If needed, performance check for ‘loud normal bar patron’: 22 ... maybe some of the regulars or the barkeep will recognise him from his fights too and be more interested in him than some of the other ‘things going on’ in the bar. He’s going for a baseline of ‘interference’, distraction and misdirection, to help others investigate).
Duncan doesn't need to hide, or really try to anyway, the fact that he honestly is here for a drink at least as much as for the group's mission to find the missing nobleman. Finding it easy to chat with Davik about the pits, as a kind of fight club, he shares stories of his own of training back at the Academy; the biggest difference being that the Pits are much less controlled, and with weapons being allowed, it seems injury is much more common, but that doesn't scare him. When David puts his silver on the counter, Duncan grabs it, slides it back to his new Elvin friend, and replaces it with coins of his own, saying "First is on me! This city really has so much to see. Both the good and the bad. At least the Pits are easy to understand."
Though he's interested more in his cups than the investigation, he does keep a sharp eye out for those in his party, just ensuring that he knows their locations, and what they are up to. Even enjoying drinks and chat, it's hard to turn off the training to be aware of his surroundings, and potential threats.
Davik smiles and nods his gratitude to Duncan for sliding the coins back and stumping up his own. "The Pits are easy to understand!" he agrees - while letting his hair down, shaking it out, and retying it (a deliberate gesture to display his trademark locks, in case anyone knows of him here), "...And I never feel safer in this city, than when I'm behind that small wooden door..... It's more tightly controlled than you might think. Yes, they allow weapons, and spells, but there are rules too... ...it wouldn't do the establishment any favours if it was a lawless free-for-all. There's a strict code of conduct. And more than enough regular patrons to enforce the code if any new faces decide to push their luck!". He smiles at the memory of one time when this had happened.
While chatting, Davik notices Duncan discretely checking the tavern for their companions positions and statuses, and from time to time he does the same.
When the barkeep comes over with their drinks, Davik enquires: "Thanks, and do you happen to have anything much to offer in the way of food too?", but his underlying, unspoken, question, layered over the first in thieves's cant (formed with a combination of body-language, the deliberate and stressed use of particular words within the spoken phrase, the occasional tap of his boot on the floor or finger on the table) is a simple " Are - you - one - of - us -?? " . Anyone untrained in the language, would miss the second question entirely, but to those in the know, this is a simple casual opener, without threat, or strong flavour, or deeper implication other than polite initial inquiry.
Davik assumes Duncan doesn't pick up on this, and if the barkeep doesn't respond in kind, he'll just proceed to order some food for the two of them (insisting that he pays this time).
He also makes sure that his secondary question is obvious enough that anyone near by might also pick up on it, if they were trained, and if they were not too far gone into their cups.
Rubin stays seated, impressed, almost despite himself, at the resourcefulness of his new companion. He wonders what other talents this Jade has hidden away. He sits back, taking a drink of his ale as he waits to see what the barkeep says next.
Raiko is going to play the old game of query the neighbours before heading inside to join - or rather, loiter in the general area of - the rest of the party. Assuming that as a seedier tavern the Skewered Dragon has its share of "one drink too many" regulars hanging around but not going inside, Raiko would be aiming to insinuate himself within the group, asking after any commotion that might have happened in the vicinity of the tavern, instead of just within. Are the gangs that roam Waterdeep common knowledge? If so, Raiko will aim to discreetly check the outside of the building for any painted or carved gang signs. (Investigation/perception if necessary: 5)
If nothing outside the tavern seems to Necessitate Raiko's immediate attention, he'll enter the tavern, after everyone else had made their way in. He's slouched slightly, hooded eyes, unsteady steps, everything about him suggesting someone who's already been nibbling at the bottle. He glowers vaguely in the general direction of the room's patrons, and slumps over a chair, indicating with one wave of the hand that he desires alcohol. If the beer does come, he pretends to drain the tankard, but doesn't actually consume any, letting it mingle with the questionable substances on floor of the tavern. (Sleight? 9)
One glance is probably enough for him to see that Even has the social situation mostly handled. As such, Raiko's primary goal right now is surveillance. From his corner of his rooms, he peers at the rest of the tavern, allowing his hair to fall over his face to hide his gaze. If necessary for him to get a good look at everything, he stumbles over to the bartender and demands a refill of his tankard, using the opportunity to examine the walls, counters, for any sort of irregularities.
The rat squeaks in protest and its red beady eyes glow for a second. It begins to morph into a small child. Wererat. You know they are part of the sewer community and you have a relatively good relation with their kind. You also know that you surprised him and didn't hurt the child. "Hey," he says scowling at you. " What did you do that for ?"
Jade and Rubin
The barman shrugs at Jade's word saying, " We got all kinds here and I m not in the habit of telling about my customers. Gang thing you understand." He lifts an eyebrow and shrugs again. " That being said I cant stop my friends, " and he looks around, " from helping you out."
A few of the men start to move toward Jade and sit at his table. " A drink for some gossip." one of them says, and smiles. There are a lot of teeth missing but it seems genuine.
One of them starts to speak; " Volo was here with a friend of his. Don't quite remember his name but Volo's a nice one, …..
Another interject, " He buys us drinks that's what you mean... " A few patron guffaws
" Anyways, they talked for a while then Volo left and That funny looking man got another meet, …"
" Ho, yes I remember the snobby one, .. Whats is name ? Neverm.. Mende …
" Renaer Neverember, the son of Waterdeep’s previous Open Lord, Dagult Neverember. Don't you know anything."
" Yep that 's him, thanks... Then they both left a few hours later. "
" Weren't they followed by a group of thugs ? "
" Hush man, we don't talk about that."
Davik and Duncan
Most of the people in the tavern are focused on Jade and his entourage. It has livened up the room and the group whispers their secrets but loud enough for all to hear and participate if they will. And some do, adding details and correcting some of the things being said.
A few patrons look up when Duncan enters talking about the Pits and several of them nod approvingly clearly enjoying the sight of a gladiator. The barman looks at Duncan up and down sizing him up and grunts to himself. He moves to the new customers and asks for their order. " We got some fresh bread, eggs and goat cheese if you'd like. Didn't have time to do my special." He looks at Davik and shakes his head. - Don't - he answers.
Raiko
Raiko enters the tavern having found nothing of interest in the vicinity. He mingles quite easily with the crowd already there.
"Ah. Sorry. Thought you were normal rat." Jorah puts away his blade, then offers up a piece of dried jerky from one of his rations, "Why you here?" Jorah sits himself down, crisscrossed from the half-rat child, raising an eyebrow at him. Personally, Jorah liked the wererats, they were interesting in the fact they could move between the form of their chosen beast and a more socially acceptable one. Sometimes, Jorah wondered what it would have been like if he could morph into a dragon.
The child tsks at the kobold but then smiles. "Not usually so crowded here. This is my spot. I ll trade you food for information." he says eagerly.
"My name is Neal. I m here at night. Grown ups talk a lot if you know how to listen"
For the others inside.
The room has gone silent and the barman growls his anger at the room. He begins to speak, almost barking an order but he is to slow for his warning. A client, a fisherman by the looks of him, who is clearly to far gone in his drinks to have noticed the change in the mood of the tavern sits up and says..
"The thugs haven’t returned to the tavern since, but they’re known to frequent a warehouse on Candle Lane. Look for the snake symbol on the door."
A stunned silence crawls for a few seconds then the large man behind the bar burst out laughing. "Well that's that."
“- Don’t - “, had been the barkeep’s response. Clear as anything, but hidden in amongst his recounting of the limited menu... And even accompanied by a shake of the head...
”- Don’t - “... ... It rings clear in Davik’s mind, for a split second or two, and it fills his thought processes...
”- Don’t - “... What did it mean?! It meant the barkeep was a member of ‘the varied trades’ for sure, a party to ‘the underworlds of the city’, an ‘ally’?? A ‘contact’ now, at least. It warranted further investigation, but at another time...
Undoubtedly the barkeep had meant ‘stop right there’, but why? A warning, for Davik’s own safety? A threat? Or just ‘not now’, a bad time? Whatever the meaning, the intention was clear. And Davik knew better than to pursue it further (for now).
Coming back to his senses, he was just about to order some food, to continue the charade for the casual observer (and maybe also ‘cant’ something simple that would indicate he was a 'friend', in case they were all in imminent danger), when the tone of the room changed, and the man turned back towards Even, with what seemed like fury.
There were a few seconds when he thought this was ‘it’, and everything would kick off! His hand started towards the hilt of his sword... And then the barkeep laughed and the tension eased.
At the mention of the warehouse on candle lane, Rubin nods. He slips from his chair and exits the tavern, his next destination already set. Moving like a shadow he leaves and moves off to where he can await the others of his group outside.
As the bar goes quiet, Duncan simple leans back, and watches to see who tenses up, and who relaxes in this type of situation. Seeing his companion talk to the drunk, he realizes that this information may be what they came for. He takes a drink, and nudges Davik pointing to Rubin slip out the door asking "Think he's off to warn someone?"
Davik relaxes too, and to Duncan he'll quietly reply"I think he's just making sure we don't all leave in one obvious group. Good thinking...". And with that in mind, Davik settles in, to finish his drink in a casual manner with Duncan. He'll wait for the rest of the group to depart safely before following a sensible time shortly after.
When Davik and Duncan leave, Davik will thank the barman, and say brashly "Thank you my good man! And yes yes! If you would like to catch my next fight, you can - enquire - at - The - Pits - after me! Ha ha! Good day!....", and another layer in thieves' cant: " - or - if - you - need - a - deft - blade - or - have - interesting - news - ". He will wait a fraction of a second for a reply, but won't let it hold him up if there isn't one forthcoming. Either way he will smile and wink at the large man, then catch up with his companions just outside or on the way towards the warehouse.
Davik relaxes too, and to Duncan he'll quietly reply"I think he's just making sure we don't all leave in one obvious group. Good thinking...". "Let's hope so" Says Duncan, thinking to himself that most of his group hasn't really proven themselves yet. The way this Volo guy goes about hiring people is quite strange. He then finishes his drink, and heads out with Davik, asking about the area of town to which they are headed.

Yeah, he super sees the feathered man. He makes no motion to indicate he has, however, and just retreats further into the shadow.
Davik and Duncan step out of the tavern and onto the street. Davik glances up at the sky. The sun had sunk below the overhanging rooftops long ago, but now the last glow of the sun’s light in the sky was beginning to fail too, and a sea-breeze was coming in... Was that the start of a storm, or rain, he could sense in the air? He hoped not...
Davik pulls the top layers of his leathers tighter over his chain-shirt, against the breeze; and buckles them under his arm and over his left shoulder (all the clasps running down his left side, like a fencer, away from his sword arm).
He casts his eyes around, looking for his companions, and he and Duncan start towards the warehouse district - his darkvision piercing easily down the dim streets, and into the shadows.
As they catch up with some of the others, he falls in-step, and does a quick tally... “Where’s Jorah?” he asks. He slows his step slightly and glances behind, to allow the man to catch up if he’s not too far back.
He begins to recount what he knows to the others: the markings on the street, the changing territories, the death-count markers (which seem to echo the bloody scene from earlier), and his conclusion: gang war. He also tells them that the barkeep at The Dragon seemed to understand thieves’ cant, so could be a valuable contact for the future.
He’ll listen to the others’ thoughts, and will also ask (discretely), “Do we want to check out this warehouse tonight? It can’t be far from here...”.
Davik clocks the signs and symbols along the way, and considers what this means in the light of the bloody-scene a few blocks away. He makes a mental note to raise it all with the rest of the group when there’s a suitable chance. For now, it’s show time...
