"Eating breakfast!" Kayn says, tossing Veythe a pack of rations.
"And planning the trip deeper into the Hedron. Vessie thinks, and I agree, that we should try the levers in the maze room first." Kayn nods to the doorway that Vasha occupies. "I think we're just about ready."
Once everyone has finished their rations, Kayn nods to Vesra. "I take the left and you take the right?" He asks. When she nods, they head past Vasha and into the maze. Kayn sets himself up at the left-most switch and waits for Vesra to say she's ready. His gnarlid takes position in-between the switches.
As the group re-enters the "maze", the loud banging and muffled screaming pick back up again, growing in intensity as Kayn and Vesra move closer to the levers. Concerned, Vasha grabs a torch, igniting it on Kayn's head and begins heading to the south corridor, avoiding the runes. Equally concerned, and remembering the "buddy rule" they established previously, Veythe rushes off after her.
...
A minute or so later, Veythe returns to the group. "Hey! Guys! We found a trapped survivor," she exclaims enthusiastically. "Vasha's talking to him right now. He's on the other side of a large stone door." She turns around, her light spell brightly illuminating her surroundings, and heads back to the main entrance.
[Assuming the group follows] Making your way down the corridor and keeping to the left, you find Vasha speaking with a voice coming from the other side of a stone door. The man's accent is thick and foreign... one no one has ever heard before. Vasha's voice echoes on the stone. "Oh trust me, I know."
The voice responds with a tone of confusion, "Out? You're the one trapped, not me! I can't get you out though since I'm in here."
As he answered, Vasha heard movement behind her, and glanced over her shoulder. She saw the rest of the party heading her way. "Please continue," Kayn said, gesturing to Vasha. She nodded and turned back to the door. "You're Kor, aren't you? I recognize the accent. You say we're trapped, but you're the one behind a door inside the hedron. Explain to me how it is that you think we're the ones who are trapped?"
"Heeheeheeheehee." He lets out a quick burst of laughter. "It's... best to not ask me to explain things. You're rea..." He pauses for a brief moment before screaming, "Monstrous emcayi!!!!"
His scream holds onto the final vowel of emcayi as he drags the "i" on continuously, his voice slowly fading. As his voice dies out, you hear the sound of a loud, exaggerated breath. "Oh," he exclaims, "wait a minute." He pauses for a moment before giggling. "You're not emcayi. You vampires just look soooooo much like them. And the merfolk... man are you ugly."
His monologue continues. "Anyway, before those two so rudely interrupted my sentence, your reality and my reality are not the same realities. I don't even know what day it is. And last time I checked, I was kor. Maybe I'm something else? It's pitch black and here, so I could be something else."
"Your... calls became louder when we approached the levers. Is there a reason you don't want us to pull them?" Kayn asks. Vasha stops to turn towards him, but he shrugs. For whatever reason the 'person' behind the door felt their presence near the levers. It had to have some sort of significance. "If it's ok... we're just going to go pull them now," he adds, turning to gesture Vesra back into the maze room.
"OH NO! Don't pull the levers!" he cries out frantically. "I can't get trapped again." Through his sobbing and possible tears, he admits, "The levers open this door. I don't know how I got free from the hedron, but I don't want to go back in there. There's emcayi everywhere!"
His tone suddenly shifts to something dark and serious, "The spawn of the Three cannot be unleashed. It would spell ruin to the entire plane. We have trapped them in their physical bodies, that they might not devour us whole."
Shifting back into the slightly-crazed voice, he says, "So... please don't pull the levers? For my sake?"
At first Rezivah hadn't noticed when the voice referred to her as.. something. As he said it again in a panic, Rezivah caught the word. Emcayi. That didn't mean anything to her, but this accusation suddenly, and severely, angered Rezivah.
"What are you speaking of, madman?! Of course, I'm vampire! Not a.." A realization came to Rezivah. "And how is it that you see us and we don't you?!" She slams her fist against the wall. "Tell me what you know, you lunatic!"
Kayn ignores Rezivah's outburst. "So the levers open this door, and you don't want to be in the hedron again. That makes sense," he says. "I'd hate to be in here too. So where is it that you are? What's on the other side of this door?" He thinks a moment, "And what makes you think we wouldn't rather be there, than here?"
"Who are you to assume my gender, you alien-bred, bread-stealing, blood-sucking, sucker of suckiness!?" he fires back. "I don't know why you can't see me. This stupid door must be one-sided. Pull the levers at the same time and I'll show you! But then you have to close the door again because I don't want to go inside."
"Also, something gross is growing in the corner of my room. It's white and dry and I don't like it. That's why you wouldn't want to be here, instead of there. It's suuuuuuper nasty. And how should I know where here is? It's pitch-black and I can't see anything."
Vasha shivered a little, and moved away from the door, allowing Kayn to take over the questioning. He would certainly be better for this task than she. The things this crazy, trapped, Kor were saying disturbed her, and she needed to get away. As she brushed past the rest of the group, she grabbed Ato, pulling him with her. "Come with me, please," she said, quietly. "I want to go... be somewhere else." Heading north again, they neared the maze. But instead of going back into the maze, Vasha paused, taking a deep breath. "I just needed to get away from him. He was starting to creep me out." She looked at Ato, and smiled. "I also wanted to check out this corridor. Sorry for forcing you to come with me. I figured you'd be the next quietest person." Heading to the west, she said, "Keep an eye out for more of those traps."
The two walked a few feet west, before the corridor turned south again a few more feet, then west again. The entire area seemed to be free of any traps, and at the end of the western corridor, Vasha spotted another door. "So, I've been thinking," she said, turning to Ato once again. "There are two levers back in the maze area. The crazy guy started yelling like crazy when we were close to the levers, and he said he didn't want us to open the door. What if those levers control these two doors? If the crazy guy is behind that door," she glanced at the door to the west. "What is behind this one?"
"Well we killed all of the emcayi in this section of the hedron, so we're safe for now I think. You... I'm not so sure. I think the emcayi got to you, so it's too late for you. We'll let you stay in that not-hedron box and leave you for the next group of hedron hunters to find." He taps on the door a couple times before signing in Kor, goodbye!
"Killed them?! You killed them?!" he shouts. "More will come. More always come. If not from their broken prison, then from..."
Either his voice shifts to a different tone, or a new voice speaks up. In a solemn, feminine tone, she warns, "The Three shall convene, and the Eye shall produce its utter fire, and they shall Rize, and this Time no Soul shall ascend."
The original voice returning, he shouts, "Hush, Saraphmusa! They weren't speaking to you. Anyway, don't open the door. We don't like being in the hedron. But have fun dying! Make sure to visit us again when you get the chance. If not in your reality, then in mine."
"Alien-bred?!" Again, the remark didn't have significant meaning, as Rezivah didn't know exactly what he meant, but the way this person was saying his words infuriated the vampire. Rezivah hissed through her teeth. "You're lucky you're behind this wall or I'd rip your throat!" She slammed the wall once again.
Hearing Kayn beginning to dismiss this person, Rezivah contested. "No, he knows things. Things we don't."
"Sounds more like the ramblings of a vapor-sniffing shaman if you ask me," Kayn responds. "If anyone knows something in that prison-that's-not-a-prison, it's Saraphmusa. The only other time I heard a name like that was from a Nimanian mer."
Kayn thinks a moment before asking, "Oh wise vape-fueled emcayi-phobic speaker of insults, tell us what you know of this hedron."
"Know?" the kor repeats. "Know?? I don't know. I don't know how I got here. I don't know who I am. I don't know where I am. Wait, no. I know. I'm outside of the hedron. In the dark. But I don't know why I'm here! I don't know ho..."
The kor's voice is drowned out by one much more serious in tone, a male. The accent reminds you of the Joraga elves. "You incessant speck, be quiet and go rest. I've told you, your name is Endoro. If your brain wasn't so devastated by the hedron's warped magic, you might remember that."
Grumbling noises in mocking can be heard from the kor just after the elf's voice recedes. Returning, he states, "I am Lomilith, and you've met Endoro and Seraphmusa. Endoro's mind has slowly devolved in the amount of time we've been trapped in here. Saraph'musa has clung to her cryptic phrases in a piss-poor attempt to keep her sanity. Only I have weathered the effects of this revolting place."
"And you will get nothing more from us until we are released from this room."
Ember wasn't feeling well. They could both feel the mana slowly fade away, leaving them cut off from the rest of Zendikar. Hang in there, buddy, she patted his head. We'll get out soon.
Vesra desperately wanted to speak up, but her nerves were getting the better of her. She felt like she was forgetting how to talk to people... No, the druid couldn't afford to think like that. "K-Kayn, they all deserve saving," she said. "We need answers, and we need to help them. Maybe it is a good idea to pull the levers."
"Vasha! We're going to let these... beings out of their prison. We might want you around to say... hello." Kayn's gnarlid rears its head from around the corner and it smiles at Vesra as it takes up position in the hallway nearest the door.
"We should try the right lever first, I think." Kayn says to Vesra. Once everyone is in a tactically comfortable position, he gestures for Vesra to lead the way to the levers. "If the right one does nothing, we'll try the left. If that does nothing, we'll try them both!" He looks excited to give the levers whirl, as there's no telling what will happen!
Ato follows Vasha without protest when she asks him to join her in exploring the remaining corridors in this half of the hedron. "Gladly, Vasha. Let's do something useful. I can be insulted another time." He spits in the direction of the "cell", a gesture not seen from him before, and an indication that the insult struck a nerve for some reason.
Finding the closed double doors, he considers Vasha's theory on the levers. "They must do something, and there is only one way to find out. Kayn seems hell-bent to do it anyway, just to see what happens, so why not let him?"
Returning to join the others, they quickly report their findings - two empty rooms and the sealed doors. "Time to see what those levers do, eh?" He takes up a position in the corridor leading back to the double doors, in case something opens down there when the levers are used.
Vasha inched closer to the door, finally resting her ear against its flat surface. A finger to her lips, she held her breath a moment, listening. She was absolutely sure there was nothing in that room. At least nothing moving or making any noise. She shook her head at Ato, about to say something, when she heard Kayn call her name. Nodding, she said to Ato, "Come on, I want to be the first person they see when that door opens. As she walked past the maze, she called out, "I'm heading to the door. Let them out when you're ready." Pulling out her hooks, she made her way to the door that kept the crazies trapped.
The group gets into position, uncertain of what might happen. Ato peers around the corner of the corridor, keeping an eye on the large door at the end the corridor in case it opens from the levers. He tosses his torch down the hallway, having it land near the door to provide some visibility while keeping him well-concealed. Vesra and Kayn head back to the levers, Kayn choosing to pull the one that has the glowing rune next to it, knowing he won't trigger the rune from going off. He keeps Kayn-dog just around the corner of the corridor leading to the door of the "cell" from where the voices are coming from, in case they are hostile. Rezivah is adamant at being the first one the people will see, perhaps hoping she can feed on them to sate the gnawing hunger her bloodlust is giving her. Vasha backs down, keeping her hooks at the ready just behind Rezivah, knowing she could still reach any potential prey.
Confirming the group's placement through Kayn-dog's eyes, Kayn nods to Vesra, who pulls the lever on the right. The group near the cell door hear something shift in the stone, which causes the kor's voice to cry out, "Don't do it! I don't wanna go back into the hedron."
The elf's voice chimes in, "We're already in the hedron you blithering idi..."
His voice is cut off as the merfolk speaks. "The gods shall tower over the mightiest of mortals, and death shall be kno..."
"STOP SAYING THAT!!!" The elf cuts her off in fury.
Unsatisfied, Kayn pulls the left lever, only to hear muffled yelling. Another mechanism in the cell door moves, though it remains shut. The kor can barely be heard weeping through the stone door. Ato still hears nothing coming from the door he watched over with Kayn-dog.
Kayn and Vesra look at each other one last time before pulling the levers in unison. Both of the mechanisms on either side of the cell door activate with a loud sound of stone grinding on stone, as the cell door slowly slides down to reveal the occupants. Vasha holds her torch up and over Rezivah's frame to prevent any dancing shadows from obscuring the adventurers. Like a curtain being raised upside down, the group first sees the heads of the occupants. Glowing a ghostly, revenant blue, the heads are all attached at the neck, all of them facing random directions at bizarre angles. Where the elf's head is facing the group with a blank face and closed eyes, the kor's head sprouts from the unnaturally long neck at an 80-degree angle, twisting to face slightly upward. His eyes peer down at the group from their corners, his face showing great amounts of fear. The merfolk's head can only be seen from the back, as her fins jut out into the air all around this bizarre, ghostly form. The door continues to slide down, revealing an even more abominable, grotesque figure. While mostly humanoid in appearance, extra pairs of arms and legs, some elf, some kor, and some merfolk, jut out from the torso at hideous angles: an arm and a foot protrude from the chest and stomach towards the party, while others sprout from the side–and you suspect the back too– and arms. As the door finishes descending and upside-down curtain fully raised, you see the ghost, an amalgamation of all three humanoids, meshed together in horrible and nigh-necromantic fashion, floats in the air, four legs dangling from its torso.
The kor's face looks at the group oddly, as they can only look upon this ghostly figure with the utmost horror. ".... Do I have something stuck in my teeth? It's hard for me to get stuff out of my teeth when I'm in the dark."
