Vasha whirled on Rezivah. "I don't give a shit what anyone thinks we should do." She pointed at Kayn, fire in her eyes. "I just want Kayn back, in one piece. We've sacrificed and lost much more than you will ever understand in this mission, and I damn sure plan to see this through. If that means letting a ghost out into the world, then so be it." She turned to Vesra, her expression softening. "Flower, can you power the cube and get us into the next room?"
Do you remember my terrible plan in the vampire nest? Vesra signed quickly to her sister. If I can't convince them, we're trying that now.
"Lomilith, Saraph'musa, Endoro, please, we need Kayn back," Vesra reached forward and grabbed Kayn's hands, stopping him from signing the flower over and over again. "I understand that you want to be healed, but if you want my help then you need to let Kayn go. If you do, I swear that I will do everything in my power to help you. I do not know exactly what you want, as everyone you have ever cared for is long dead, but I will do my best. But only if you leave Kayn's body."
Kayn begins to laugh hysterically. "Tazeem," Kayn says between giggles with his eyes slightly rolled into the back of his head. "They will release me at the Sunspring that soars high in the sky above the Calcite Flats, a region at the northernmost tip of Tazeem." Kayn's giggles begin to wain and he shakes his head, swiping at the arm attached to his shoulder again.
"Don't do that!" His expression changes to one of horror, "No! That's different. They choose, not I. I never force them... and stop laughing!"
“I really wanted to take you to the Sunspring, but your hurting my friend,” Vesra sighed. “Kayn, I am so sorry.” She closed her eyes and summoned a fistful of fire, preparing to hurl it at the mage. Maybe if they knocked Kayn out, they could get the spirit to exit his body... But she couldn’t bring herself to do it, and the flame went sailing past his ear harmlessly.
Kayn watches lazily as Vesra launches one of her little balls of flame in his direction. He seems unconcerned as it whizzes past his head. "Won't help, Kor." He says. "If this body dies, it is ours. You have all threatened to lock us in here, attempted to kill us, and now you promise safety. No. This is the safest option. This is the only option."
Kayn then mumbles something to himself. It sounds like it's in goblin, but it's so low and foreign that you're unable to parse its meaning. He kicks his leg out, causing the ghostly limb to dangle before saying, "We need to go. We finish this... then I finish this." He points at his ghost-limb.
After a few long moments, Kayn pulls a needle from his pouch. Deftly, he stabs the arm dangling from his shoulder. A long strand of purple mana follows the needle's path as he stabs the leg danging from his thigh. He whips the needle in a circle and pulls, tightening the strand of mana until both the arm and leg are securely fastened to his body.
"Shhhh..." he says. "We'll have none of that." He looks over to the group afterwards and nods. "The voices are gone now. A whisper. They can still hear my thoughts and observe what is going on around us, so be careful. For now... they are spectators in my body."
Deciding their plan of knocking Kayn out to be a bad idea, Vesra stands down, channeling mana into the cube [1 mana point lost] and plunging it into the southwestern door. The cube flares to life, locking into place on the door as it slowly swings open, revealing a long hallway, free of the white decay the emcayi leave around. The hallway is flanked on both sides by rows of large, glowing crystals, nestled into alcoves on either side. The crystals emit a brilliant blue light which dances along the walls of the hallway [normal light], painting everything in its shade of blue. At the end of the hallway lies another door, concealing whatever lies beyond.
Ato raises a hand to stop Vasha from charging past as she typically does. "Patience, Vasha. We all want to get this done, but let everyone do their jobs, ok?" Before setting off down the hallway, he examines the doorway, floor and ceiling in the bright light, looking for signs of traps or other danger. Kayn follows close behind, sharing knowledge of the crystals and other tidbits of lore which he's apparently channeling from the speckormerelf. In the harsh light, he sees the tell-tale signs of a pressure plate in the floor at the far end of the passage, right in front of the far door. Moving close to try and determine a way to disarm it, Kayn continues to offer advice, but it's clearly nonsense in this case. Apparently, the trio of ancient beings were no rogues, by the misguided gibberish he shares.
Ato pulls some tools from a pouch and tinkers at the edges of the plate for a few moments before rising and stepping back in satisfaction. "It will be safe enough to cross now, without setting off some new attempt at killing us all. I need the cube to open this next door though. Everyone move in so we can pull it out of that door to use here."
As Kayn walks down the hallway behind Ato, he notes, "These crystals are conduits for mana. These ones look to focus on lightning. We might be able to take samples, or even a whole crystal. They're quite valuable, but it's a dangerous process." The crystals were from another region of Zendikar, the closest being Ora Ondar, the Impossible Garden. Their extraction typically included the use of safety tools, but if they could extract these ones they'd sell of a hefty price in Affa.
As Ato expertly disarms a trap, Rezivah eyes the strange crystals that line this chamber. They did seem to house an energy. Kayn speaks of their worth, but Rezivah thinks of when Vasha was damaged by a rune trap earlier and how Kayn disappeared behind a door, only to reappear as his gnarlid's space, gravely wounded.
"I would advise against the effort, unless you want someone to be injured further."
While the group ushers into the corridor, Ato refuses to upset the crystals by trying to remove parts of them for profit after hearing that such an act would set off the trap. With the glowing cube removed from the other door, the door swings shut, locking the group in the corridor. It quickly gets passed to Ato, who presses the cube into the alcove on the door, causing the door to flare to life for a brief moment in a flash of color before it swings to the side.
Taking the driftglobe, Ato sends it a ways into the room to properly see what's inside. Fairly illuminated, he sees a large, lofty chamber, with half of the room consisting of a lowered floor about ten feet down, and stairs on either side to reach the lower level. On the opposite side of the room along the lower terrace stands a curious construct, similar in construction to the artificial being the group encountered in the mural hallway. However, this construct is much larger, taller than a Joraga elf by a good two feet, and stands motionless on four spider-like legs crafted out of hedrons. A massive, thick shield, perhaps five feet in height, is attached to the creature's core, with four arms–each arm ending in blade-like appendages–protruding out of that same core. It appears to lack any sort of head.
The hedron construct seems to stand ever-vigilant, though appearing to be lifeless, guarding a door just behind it.
Seeing the hedron statue stationed at the end of the chamber, Rezivah immediately distrusted it. It seemed to be a guardian, prevent any further travel. "I'm going to try to get a sense of whether or not that thing will move."
With that, Rezivah slowly made her descent down the stairs. Kayn accompanied her. He spoke of the various magical effects achievable by the hedrons. Is this Kayn speaking to me? or the specters? Rezivah was trying to probe the air for mana and trying to see joints or breaks in the statues form that would betray its statuesque nature.
Seeing the hedron construct, Ato steps aside to let Rezivah and Kayn move past him and into the room to investigate. "Be careful - everything else has been deadly to us. No reason to think that thing will be any different." He follows the pair through the doorway, broadspear in hand, stepping off to his right and out of the way of the others behind him, then waiting for the arcane duo to do their work before moving any further into the room.
Vasha moved into the room, keeping a wary eye on the thing that appeared to be a statue. Ato was right. This whole place had been nothing but trouble since they'd found it. The statue could be just another trap waiting for them to be sprung. She walked over to the railing over looking the statue, and crouched down. Pulling her hooks out, she prepared herself for the worst. "Be careful," she said, quietly, but she doubted anyone actually heard her. It was mostly said to calm her own nerves.
In her childish figure, Vesra steps into the room as confident as she can be. Ember rests on her shoulder, busily occupied with a ball of flame that it tosses back and forth. She follows closely behind Vasha and readies her own ball of flame. If worst came to worst, she wanted to have the advantage of being ready like her big sister [Move to E2].
With her lute at the ready, Vethe strides confidently into the room, enjoying her newfound toy. She stops at the top of the stairs, allowing Rezivah and Kayn to take the lead [Move to A2]. "Tread carefully," she warns, "things aren't as they seem in this weird place." She shudders as Kayn passes by as his ghostly appendage reaches out for her hopelessly. Poor thing...
As the group enters the room and gets into position, a high-pitched echoing buzz exudes from the construct as it flares to life. Its four appendages back it up towards the door in a crouching position as the swords flare out in threatening fashion. A high-pitched sound, almost like a shriek, cries out, "Jich sho zazthas thaiesho, eldrazi!"
"Not Eldrazi," Kayn says. "Not Eldrazi," Kayn says in Elvish. "Not Eldrazi," Kayn says in Mer. "Not Eldrazi," Kayn says in Goblin. Not Eldrazi, Kayn signs in Kor. Each time he does, he watches for a reaction from the construct. He thought about proving his point by showing that he bleeds red, but constructs don't see in the normal way humanoids do so it would be pointless.
A few moments pass in silence. The Construct makes no indication that it understands the goblin's words.
Ato curses as the construct assumes it's defensive position before the far door. The door they need to get through, naturally. "Any ideas on how we can use these exploding crystals against it without killing ourselves in the process? Lure it into the hallway and set them off?"
Met by silence, he makes another suggestion. "Fine. Maybe it's the ghost inhabiting Kayn, or Rezivah's vampiric nature that's activated the thing, thinking they are Eldrazi somehow. What if Vasha and i try to approach it and see what happens. You two come back towards the door here and we'll try that. Otherwise, we may just need to fight it."
Kayn pulls Rez back away from the construct and nods at Vasha and Ato to tell them that they're ready. It was quite possible that the two of them triggered the construct, but it was also possible that the construct was guarding something and didn't want anyone to enter. Either way, it was in their way.
Vasha thought over Ato's suggestion. She was accustomed to being the only one willing to rush into danger, so she welcomed Ato's idea. "Let's do this," she said as he approached her. She gave a quick glance around the room, to make sure everyone was ready, saw the nod from Kayn, then nodded to Ato. They both hopped over the railing to the floor below, and began to slowly make their way toward the construct, both staying low, Ato with his spear in hand, and Vasha with her hooks at the ready.
Kayn watches as both Vasha and Ato slowly advance on the construct. For some reason two humanoids advancing on him, crouched low with their weapons ready, brought forth a hostile response from the construct. Quickly, Kayn raises the wand and traces the patterns his fingers would normally make for his Fire Bolt. The bolt flies true, splattering the construct wholly in its main body section. The flames hover about its body briefly as the construct advances on his allies.
(Move further back towards doorway (C2), fire bolt (22 to hit, 7 damage)).
Vasha whirled on Rezivah. "I don't give a shit what anyone thinks we should do." She pointed at Kayn, fire in her eyes. "I just want Kayn back, in one piece. She turned to Vesra, her expression softening. "Flower, can you power the cube and get us into the next room?"
A dwarf with a canoe on his back? What could go wrong?
Kayn turns from the door and walks past the group. "Nope. I don't believe you," he says. "It makes no sense."
"No... you're insane. I'm fine." He rolls his eyes, "The Eldrazi are not the aliens. The Eldrazi built these to trap the aliens."
"No, you're stupid." He looks over at Vasha and signs, Tulips... tulips, tulips, tulips.
Kayn Laughs before blurting out, "Don't tell Ato that... he'd kill you... me... us."
