Based on his responses so for, the man is deeply affected by something. Eonis does not necessarily see the situation as hopeless, but he definitely doesn't seem like he would respond through any short-term treatment.
OOC: Waiting to advance to Aleyd Burral until Sylyra has a chance to do what he wishes with the wand.
OOC: No problem. I was also curious on the answers from the cleric who was tending to the man on how they determined his village of origin if he is at this level of communication. He might have been more lucid earlier, someone might have recognized him, there could be confirmed evidence of a village that was attacked, or, it could be a simple logical inference based on the direction he came from. That could be useful information. Beyond that Eonis is also curious as to whether he is under a magical effect as opposed to simple trauma effects. Once those questions are clarified she is also good to go to talk to the guards.
“I do have a spell of magic detection readied, as I noted on the way here, but if you have a wand that can do the same I would prefer to save that resource, in the event we require healing or combat magic at some point,” Eonis says. “Let’s see what the wand reveals. I’m also curious how the acolytes discerned which village the man hailed from. Once that’s all cleared up it’s likely prudent to move on to the next lead.”
Walking back in the room with the wand, and after Eonis references her own magical prowess ... again ... Sylyra activates the wand and awaits whatever information the object might provide about the immediate area.
OOC: The room isn't more than 30 feet square, is it? If so, Sylyra will walk around with the wand to make sure he doesn't miss anything.
Ola, normally indifferent to demonstrations of magic use, this time was watching Sylyra's manipulations with a hint of curiosity (keeping out of the way, of course).
OOC: Elden does not know where the man's village is, only that he arrived in the graveyard yesterday.
For Sylyra:
Through use of the wand, you detect the presence of magic throughout the room. However, upon activating the auras, you see only the magical items that the party holds. The madman himself does not seem to have any magic about him.
If Sylyra shares that the witness is not a victim of any magical compulsions, she gathers her things, reassembles and puts her Herbalism Kit back into her backpack, and will follow the others to meet the Black Fist representative.
Wielding the wand, Sylyra looks about the room, then shakes his head at Ola before turning his eyes on the caretaker while walking up to stand before the bound man, looking at him. "Does anyone have a guess as to which village he might be from? Was there anything about his clothes? Did he smell like anything? Did he have any valuables on him, which would indicate he had not been robbed?" Following Elden's response, Sylyra slaps the disheveled man across the face.
"Sylyra!" Ola moved closer - there will no other beatings, but public squabbles between party members was not an option either. "This man is not hysterical, nor hiding anything - priests would know it already. There is no point of hitting him. It is time to go Black Fist."
"Sylyra!" Ola moved closer - there will no other beatings, but public squabbles between party members was not an option either. "This man is not hysterical, nor hiding anything - priests would know it already. There is no point of hitting him. It is time to go Black Fist."
Eonis seems relatively unconcerned with the slap, instead breaking down the situation from a series of disparate perspectives. "It's no issue of major consequence, Ola. An open handed slap of that kind won't do any significant damage to the man, or set back his recovery. You're correct, the man does not display hysterics, but trauma. Sylyra is trying something that he feels could provide a breakthrough, perhaps something that the priests had not considered."
Eonis leaves the rest of her analysis unspoken. Sylyra doesn't act out of sadism or anger, but he does send the message that he is one who is willing to do what others wouldn't, to make the hard choices, and so on. Nor does he ask permission prior to taking such action. This sends a message to both the Kelemvorites, as well as establishing his position within the group hierarchy.
She adds, after a verbal pause while she allows her mind, which still feels painfully sluggish, to process these norms of social interaction, "Of course, additional strikes would serve no value, even as a hypothetical."
Elden answers Sylyra, "As far as I know he did not carry anything on him, sir. There are many small villages and hamlets around. He could have come from Kabel's Hill, or a settlement within the Twilight Marsh, or anywhere in between."
The young acolyte reacts to the slap in unison with Ola. "Sir!"
The madman chomps down on Sylyra's hand as it pulls away, and his repetitious speak gives way to loud yipping and struggling. The bite leaves a mark of impact, but does not cause any damage.
"Sir, I cannot allow you harm him any further," Elden says sternly. "He is under our care. We are servants of Kelemvor, not Bane!" He seems tempered slightly by Eonis's analysis, but his stern, disapproving glare remains.
"Quite right, there is a different paradigm for tolerance, or even revelry, in casual brutality, for the followers of Bane than those of an ordered gatekeeper deity like Kelemvor, or even a stern deity of War such as Tyr, or the Red Knight," Eonis says, as unnecessary academic recitation that might placate the Kelemvorite. She watches Sylyra's reaction to the man biting the hand that struck him, as well as the man's animal-like defenses. "Clearly such an approach makes this man less lucid, not more so, in any case. It's my opinion that with long term care this man may recover and provide more coherent information. He is already receiving excellent care here, from the acolytes of Kelemvor. Our time would be best served moving on to the next source of information, and leaving this man in their care."
She takes a step towards Elden and makes a brief sign of peace between aligned faiths, normally reserved for the Trinity of deities which Tyr is part of. "Thank you for your diligence, Elden. If this man should regain his faculties and communicate anything else of note, please have word sent to us immediately."
Sylyra doesn't react to Ola's or the caretaker's exclamations, and he doesn't react negatively to the wild man's aggressive response.
OOC: Since Sylyra can "decipher [the] noises and motions" of beasts, does he recognize actual bestial communication in the man's "loud yipping and struggling"?
Sylyra turns away from the bound man and scrutinizes Eonis as she supports his action. He then turns and gives Ola a small smug smile. But when the cleric begins to wax on, the druid rolls his eyes and walks toward the room's exit, extending the wand as he nears Uragum. "Nothing," he says shortly.
It seemed the group was ready to move to the Podol Plaza. Ola thanked brother Elden, expressed her hope that the priests will be able to help the poor soul here and went to to have another no doubt invigorating conversation with the high ranking Black First. She was actually curious to finally meet one.
Eonis follows the others to meet with the Black Fist officer, briefly stating her intention to “...replace the magical detection spell at tomorrow morning’s prayers with something less redundant, given the possession of the wand...” and otherwise reverts to silently going about her various nervous and paranoid tics.
Arnald has stayed back letting the others interact with the man. As they leave to go meet with the Black Fist, Arnald wonders if Eonis will truly mesh with the group.
Elden stares at Eonis with slight shock, still processing the shifting emotions. "Yes...of course," he answers, still standing slack-jawed as the party departs.
OOC: Keeping the wand in Sylyra's inventory for now until Uragum takes it back.
The afternoon air is crisp as you cross the city to the outpost that Doomguide Yovir Glandon told you stations Aleyd Burral. The building is larger than the outpost manned by Guard Sergeant Hurn at the docks, and cleaner inside.
With only the slightest of effort, you are directed to a harried looking human woman wearing the uniform of a Black Knight, an officer of the Black Fist. Streaks of grey in her blonde hair frame a face with the hard-won lines of advancing age and a violent life. Turning a stern gaze upon you, she offers, "I understand that you have been looking for me. How may I assist you, citizens?"
Eonis bows at the waist, then stands with a somewhat rigid posture, but waits for those with more established local reputations to make their introductions.
