Vigil realizes that these are not regular wisps and starts wracking its brain to try and remember if he ever heard of these kinds of spirit in his experience as a monster hunter.

Vigil can't seem to come up with anything that he's heard of for a variation on will-o-the-wisps. It could be that this is a unique phenomenon, or perhaps an ancient curse. But, from the interactions they've had so far, they can at least move things physically.

Zack has stood, examining the scene before him for a while. He looks carefully around the room, in hopes of finding something that might offer some insight into who this 'family' of beings is or how he might help them (Investigation: 18).

(sorry, been crippled by explosive back pain recently and haven't been able to do much except lay in bed... z.z)
Zack has... very little to go off of. The room appears to be some kind of storage tower, but that's about all he has at this time.

Zack scratches his head for a bit, "I'm not sure what to do next gents. Any ideas? I might spend a little time to see if I can find anything magical here perhaps."
If there are no objections, Zack will spend 10 minutes ritually casting detect magic.
Kalgren scratched his beard. The wisps clearly could understand the party, even having clear, indicative moments of comprehension if the silent look and shrug showed, but communication proved difficult. They could not speak and the hands on approach had a rather unexpected result.
He turned to Oriander. 'You are more familiar with the surroundings: any suggestions? Or would it be best that we move on?'
OOC: anyone else have or had the issue that DNDBeyond (randomly) logged you out or that notification mails only came in 12 to 36 hours after the actual comment was posted?

(OOC - I've been getting logged out every time I close the window/browser recently. & have had a few instances of missed notifications or late ones as well. They recently did an update to the site I think, so perhaps there is something in that?)

(Yes. I’ve been getting notifications a long time after they’ve been posted as well. Also was disconnected for some reason. DnD beyond’s been weird lately.)
(the disconnects was a one time thing due to an update. Forum notification failures are being worked on, allegedly. Been reporting it on a thread recently.)
Oriander folds his arms. "I... I woul' think there is somethin' we can do... They've been 'ere a long time. Surely, we can 'elp 'em pass on."
As Zack takes the time to cast Detect Magic, the faint hint of general magical energy can be seen permeating the air. Necrotic and radiant all intermixed, but no specific school of magic. Almost as if a planar overlay had occurred.

"Hmm," Zack says as he strokes his chin, "Seems like there's another plane overlaying this one... perhaps. Interesting though that they can interact with this one."
(OOC - So the spirits have been cleaning up the house? What have they been doing all this time?)
Vigil suddenly has an idea. As they seem to be able to interact with physical objects, the tiefling pulls out his rapier. He moves towards the wisps with his weapon in hand and tries to catch their attention. Once they are looking at him, he starts tracing the letters of his name on the ground with his weapon. V-I-G-I-L. He then points to himself, indicating that he is Vigil. He then hands over the rapier to one of the spirits, hilt first as to not frightened them.

(Well, they've been trying to at least. But you also don't know if they are restricted to the one tower. ^^;)

One of the wisps looks to the others before reaching out to grasp the rapier. Surprisingly, despite the struggle the wisp upstairs had with a locked chest, the rapier is held firm. It then slowly scratches out a series of names.
Alvandir, Selnan, Ferrin, and Lyra. It then points and identifies each of the wisps to each name, including the one upstairs... The one scratching out the names is Ferrin, apparently, and seems to be the "leader."
And everyone here can tell that the names are of Elvish origin... but Zack is able to tell by the "writing" that it is ANCIENT Elvish. So... it's a surprise they can understand Common text at all.

"Those are very old names," Zack says as he looks at the names scratched out on the floor, "Well before anything I've found nowadays." He thinks for a moment, then turns to Ferrin and says in elvish, "How may we help you, my friend?" and indicates to the ground as if to say "write it down".

(oh shoot, I guess you do speak Elvish. lol. I said it as an indicator that you were well read enough to recognize it as ancient Elvish, but uh... you kinda have to be if you speak it! XD)
*There is a pause before Ferrin scritches into the dirt.* "We died. Don't know why we are here. Trying to keep our towers." Succinct and to the point.

"Where did you die?" Zack asks in elvish, translating to the others as he continues the conversation.
Ferrin moves over to the window and points to a smaller tower on the other side of the cavern. He then scratches into the floor. "All died. Water drained. Used to be in lake."

Kalgren saw that Vigil and Zack were having more succes in the conversation department and he wandered closer. One of the wisps was using Vigil's rapier to scratch words in the dirt in response to posed questions. Finally they were getting somewhere. The writing the wisps used looked old, very old, though distinctly Elvish. Kalgren knew enough of the language to know that the wisps were using an old form. Which did not bode well. Considering the lifespan of the average elf, to encounter someone using a language form considered to be ancient by those who regularly live for 700 years, give or take, meant these had to be dead and stuck here for the gods know how long.
He bend slightly to see where the wisp, who had called himself Ferrin, pointed at. The remnants of a lake it would seem. Who or what would benefit from draining an underground lake?
'How did you die?' Kalgren asked in the Elvish tongue. 'And who or what drained the lake? And what for?'
He could have been a bit more tactful about asking the circumstances of one's death but the sooner they got answers, the quicker they could make their way back topside and bask once more in the glory of the sun, praise Amaunator. He subtly gave the sun pendant around his neck a quick swipe with his thumb.

"Earth shake. Reclaim. Don't know." A pause, and more scritches. "...Lake not underground before."
