Kalgren looked at Zack with an incredulous look on his face. 'You have no idea what it even is that we're dealing with and you immediately want to go at it during the night?' He reached for his mug of ale. 'You're either too brave or too arrogant for your own good.'
He finished his drink. 'I'm with sir Red here.'Kalgren pointed a thumb at Vigil. 'He and Grell have a lead on the captain of the guard: why don't we go have a talk with him first before it's dark? Guards always tend to be a bit jumpy after sundown.'
He got up to see how much Vigil put on the counter and took out the same amount. He spotted the serving lady, not a hard thing to do, and approached her once more. 'You have my thanks for a delicious meal.'Kalgren said to her with a warm smile. 'Do you perchance have enough room to stash away four strangers for the night in your fine establishment?'
"I do. Since you're here on business and not just lurking about, I'll call it 2 silver a day for the rooms for all four of you. I'll cash you in at the end of the week." (which is roughly 5 days away right now). Elandar smiles a bit and waves them off, leaning against the side of her bar.

Listening to the party's concern about not being well received, Vigil simply grunts and starts heading towards the exit. "Damn that captain then, Vigil said. If he can't do his job properly, I won't stand idly by and wait for whatever's out there to get stronger and spread."
Vigil gave a thankful nod and a wink to the barmaid. Once he is outside, whether the party is following him or not, he heads for the house of the most recent disapearance, as it was pointed on the map.
Zack gets in step with Vigil. "I'm very interested to further investigate the marks left by our prey. I'm curious as to their origins. It seems that most indications point to a type of tool, but I'm yet to figure out what sort of tool it might be. Then again, these books that Wulfa gave me might offer something too," he pats his pack as he says this. He continues walking alongside Vigil for a minute. Zack then turns to him, "So what is your story, my new friend?"
Vigil seemed focused as he was walking towards the southern part of the village. He was, however, caught off guard by the human’s question. He chuckled.
"We’ve known each other for little over an hour and we’re already friends? How lucky am I?" He said, with a hint of cynicism in his tone. "If you really want to know, though, this is what I do. I travel, I look for mysteries and solve it. One way or another."

Kalgren put down the reservation for the four of them at the inn, gave his thanks to the lady and followed the rest outside. It seemed the plan was to just bust down the doors of some houses related to the disappearances. Kalgren much preferred talking to the captain, for he is, as he would say, a people's person, but he did recognise the advantage of strength in numbers. Following Vigil and Zack as they took the lead, Kalgren folded his hands on his back and walked after them, keeping to himself and observing the town as they passed through it.

"Haha a fellow sleuth!" Zack laughs, not paying attention to the remark about being friends, "Well I am glad to have another so enchanted by mystery as I here to help."
As they approach the house of the most recent victim, Zack will slow his pace and look around the street - looking for paths to and from the house and try to locate the markings that Wulfa mentioned (Perception: 12).

Grell remains stoic and silent at the back of the strange group as they make their way through town and towards the first house. As they approach and Zack begins to slow, the large Dragonborn tightens the grip on his unslung maul, eyes piercing the gloom all around.
On the way, the townsfolk wave and murmur to each other. It is a small village after all, there is no doubt that rumors are gonna spread. But this place is at least a relatively wholesome place, so it shouldn't be too bad. (Spoiler, it isn't bad)
But as for what you are actually looking for... Crossing the river was easy, there are multiple bridges that go across. It takes roughly 30 minutes to finally get to the first house indicated. Nothing out of the ordinary comes across your senses on the way there, but as soon as you arrive, you see two major things:
One, a guard or two stands around the area and clearly looks bored out of their mind. Wearing the green and silver of the king, but not bearing any of the regality of the normal city guards that the four of you have seen prior to arriving here. And two, multiple marks can be seen along the walls and very clearly look almost identical to the marks on the tree from the way in.

The marks on the house made it clear that they had found the right place. That was the part that Vigil found most curious. What were those marks? Who or what made these? Hopefully the little group would be able to figure it out. The only concern seemed to be the couple of guards standing near the building. They could prove to be problematic. They might prevent them from investigate the house.
"Well, here we are. Any of you have a plan for getting those two out of the way." the tiefling asked.
"I am not the best with convincing others of anything unfortunately," Zack pipes up, "Though, Wulfa did request our help. Perhaps that might offer us some sway over these guards?"
(DM Question - what is the layout of the house? Two storey etc? And where are the markings in relation to all of this as well? On the outside walls of the house or a nearby tree? Is there a garden in front of the house? Zack is trying to get a picture of how the creature might have moved and taken people, but also where else he could look for signs.)
Kalgren noticed the others hesitating at the sight of the guards and smirked. 'Ah yes, the ever present dilemma of wanting to do the right thing but the big bad law men are there to stop your schemes.'He nudged the others. 'Showtime. Be ready.'
He pulled his shirt halfway out of his pants, knelt down to dirty his knees and scooped up a handful of dirt which he proceded to smudge his face, hands and sleeves. Satisfied with his disheveled look, Kalgren grabbed hold of one of Grell's hands and dragged his claws over his cheek to make a shallow cut.
'Remember: plan B is to just knock them out.' Kalgren winked at the others, Grell in particular, before he dashed towards the guards. He made a show of it of half running, half stumbling before clutching one of the guards by its tabard, pulling the guard halfway to the ground as Kalgren looked up with a frightful expression.
'You... you have to help me!'Kalgren panted in between heavy breaths. 'Something attacked me!'

(One storey, roughly 6-ish rooms. Large enough for a family. Markings are up towards the rafters, in both the wood and stone the building is made from. A couple marks around the windows as well.)

The other guard steps up behind his partner, and the two seem primed and ready to just leap into action. Something better than being bored to tears out by this house.

'I was just making my way back when-'Kalgren said to the guard, 'Some... something attacked me. Something with big, sharp, pointy teeth and claws!'
He wildly gestured to some direction directly away from the house, conveniently using the gesture to disguise the casting of Minor Illusion. The sound of a wild animal roared in the distance to add credence to his claim.

Sure
Sleight of Hand 10
(Never said it was gonna be a difficult check :P Magic *is* still somewhat commonplace in the world.)
The guards' heads shoot up and they nod. "Go seek medical attention, we'll be back." The two look at each other, draw their swords, and rush off into the forest nearby. They seem to have completely and totally fallen for the little trick.
Vigil watched the scene from a distance. He couldn't help but smile at the ingenuity of the holy man. Clever, he thought to himself.
When the guards leave to investigate the "beast", Vigil will quietly make his way to the house to begin the investigation.
