Keth watches the cabin warily and nods in appreciation as Flynn calms the dog. He stays near Cookie and the wagon but pays particular attention to where the others are when they approach the house.
The dog appears to have been rolling in something and smells a little. It appears he hasn't been fed for a few days and his ribs can be seen through the dirty matted coat. The dog does bark happy once Flynnpets him and runs a foot, spins in a circle, and comes back to Flynn to be petted again, yipping from time to time.(OCC: At least that is how my dog acts sometimes!)
Keth stands near the wagon. He can hear Cookie mutter under his breath, asking. "What in tarnation is going on in this territory?" Keth also hears Moon mutter what sounds like a prayer in a strange language.
Moon casts her spell. Suddenly her senses are heightened to a supernatural level. Scents assail her nostrils and her mind feels the familiar touch of the divine. Moon does not detect any diseases or poisons in the area. Moon follows Rictor towards the cabin.
Hand on his revolver, Rictorscurries across the ground almost monkey-like, making no sound at all. As he gets close to the cabin he finds the door open and it is dark inside.
Both Moon & Rictor listen and look around. There are no sounds coming from the cabin nor from anywhere else for that matter, save for the sounds from the dog.
Flynn's face takes on a concerned expression "Hey boy, you dont look so good. As soon as we are finished here, we can clean you up and get some food in you"
Flynn then addresses the rest of the group in a quiet voice "The goddamn dog hasn't eaten in days. I bloody well hope the owners are gone, cause I am gonna have words with them if they ain't"

Rictor rubs his beard, more scraggly and long than the oiled and pointed goatee he'd sported when he first arrived at the ranch. "I don't think there's anyone here to feed the poor creature, Flynn. This place seems empty. Still, it's dark inside. Anyone as can see should come with me, the rest of you ought to keep a sharp lookout."
He pokes his head inside the dark cabin and looks around. If he doesn't see any immediate threats he'll creep slowly inside, eyes flashing like a cat's in the dark.

Miz An Moon raises an eyebrow at watching Mr. Graves step into the house with such ease despite it being too dark for a normal human to see. Shaking her head, she mutters under her breath, "Remo'nd me to never get between 'im and the prospect of some good eats..."
Taking cover at the doorway, Miz An waits a moment for Rictor to find a hiding place then will call out "Hello in the home! Meesta Thompson? We're hired hands workin' with ol' Meesta Cookie, lookin' for a place ta stay the night. The door's wide open...is everythin' alright, Meesta Thompson?"
If there is no response, Miz An will move in with her hammer's head held close to her main hand, the traditional stance of meeting looters and robbers indoors at the Big Apple (dodge action).

Just wanna call out to leapingmountain: your last post was beautiful.
Flynn walks to Keth and the dog follows him immediately.
Rictor enters the residence and looks around as Moon stands at the door, at first calling out and receiving no answer then taking a defensive stance at the door. Rictor, using one of his infernal gifts, steps deeper inside the residence to look around.
The cabin is cold, dark, and empty. Not only is there no one living in it, but it is also devoid of any furniture or other trappings of an occupied home.
Keth is the first to notice it. His senses register the change in the air and temperature.
Then Flynn and Cookie. Then Moon and lastly Rictor.
The wind picks up a little. The breeze has a chill to it and the cloud cover increases over a few minutes. Then the heavens open up!
Snow!
Slow at first but as the moments pass the snow increases.
"Looks like we're in for a cold one this evening," says Cookie. "We best put the mules in the barn and settle into the cabin." With that Cookie starts guiding the mules towards the barn.
Rictor stands, frowning. He shrugs at Moon before peering outside at the snow with a disbelieving laugh. "Oh yeah, somebody up there is definitely picking on me."
He takes the time to explore the rest of the empty cabin, finding a corner where he can put his belongings. He steps outside and nods to the rest of the party. "Empty. And no one's lived here for a while. So much for finding eats."
Shortly after Rictor steps outside, Miz An Moon follows, letting her hammer slide to the ground with a thump and removing her bonnet in slight frustration. This action reveals long blue hair tied in a bun secured with a pair of chopsticks. She takes those out and undoes the bun too, letting a long blue ponytail fall down her back.
"Argh! Looks like da Thompsons are all gone. No furniture or nothin'! Wonda why they left their dog behind? Couldn't have been an attack, would it?"
If the rest are quiet, Miz An will follow suit. But either way, at the first signs of snow she'll give Rictor a friendly but actually pretty strong elbow to the side. "Meesta Graves, why don't ya check da barn? With any luck, some plump unfortunate creaturah might've made a little home there. Give ya itchy triggah-fingah some exercise."
Picking up her hammer, she jerks her thumb in the direction of the water tank. "I'll mosey over there ta check if there's watah. I got a good eye to Detect Poison and Disease fo' now thanks to some magic. What about da rest of you boys? Moind if I borrow one of ya to lift da cover off dat thing?"
Keth looks skyward just before the snow falls. He crouches down to the dog and ruffles it's neck, quickly looking over the beast. He pulls out a small bit of jerky and offers it to the dog.

Is the dog just merely dirty and malnourished?
Keth gets a closer look at the dog and finds a wound that is a couple of weeks old on the underside of the dog's leg.
Moon goes to the tank and pulls back the lid. She finds the lid easy for her to move but the tank empty and dry.
Cookie moves the team to the barn and starts to unhitch the mules.
As the snow starts falling the wind starts to pick up a bit. It seems to be blowing down from the distant mountains. Abruptly the party does hear a faint distant howl on the wind. The dog's ears perk up as it does and it runs inside the house.
Rictor draws his revolver with a grimace. "Don't much like the sound of that. The mules are hardy creatures but I still think we oughta get them in the safety of the barn right quick before any wolves comes sniffing."
He heads over to Cookie and helps him with putting the mules up in the barn.
Bill watches as his companions react to the dog and then Rictor drawing his pistol. He just sighs as he looks around. His hands instinctively pulling the bow up and pulling lightly back on an arrow "What do you think it is?" he asks turning the opposite way of Rictor to ensure their ends are covered.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Upon seeing the more experienced ranch hands draw their weapons at the unknown sound, Miz An Moon runs over from the water tank. Joining the back to back moment of camaraderie, she raises her own hammer, taking an attacking stance, but listening intently.
(Dropping concentration on the previous spell for Guidance, listening to discern what kind of intent the distant animal howling means.)
Nature check: 6
"Watah's gone booone dry," she whispers to the others as they wait in anticipation, "Even if it was emptied purposely, still prob'ly took a while to dry up in this cloudy, chilly weather...Lord knows how strong and loyal that poor animal's been waitin for his master...or does that make the animal hisself' suspicious?"
The snow starts falling heavier as the party waits and listens. For a few tense moments, the party all the party hears are the sounds of the falling snow and their own heartbeats. After 5 minutes Cookie speaks up: "I ain't gonna wait around here to see what that was but I ain't gonna let it get my mules." With that Cookie goes into the barn and you can see him pull out his shotgun. Cookie settles in inside the barn.
After a few more moments the party hears nothing but the snow falling.
"We should set up watches and take extra care. Something drove off these residents and it still may be nearby.," Keth says as he helps everyone to get things into the barn. On his watch Keth would call Aihàm and using first Speak with Animals and then Beast Sense would spend the full hour to soar around as the bird.
Rictor helps ol' Cookie get the mules into the barn. "Once it gets pitch dark out here I'll keep an eye out," he says, eyes flashing unnaturally, "and holler if anything heads towards the barn. Try to get some rest, pal."
He ambles away from the barn, revolver holstered for now. For a long moment he stares at Keth, impressed as ever with his abilities with animals, before he heads over to Moon. "I trust the dog a lot more than whatever made that noise. I'll welcome the extra set of eyes and ears, not to mention his nose. I'll take the second watch once the stars are out."
With that he hunkers down in a corner of the eerily empty cabin and tries to get some rest if he can.
Flynn heads off into the house to look for the dog. He is doing it so they can have a distraction if a beast comes for them in the night. Not because he liked it and didn't want it to get eaten or anything, it is purely strategic.
