Jeb returns with John as the interrogations conclude and introductions are underway with the Dragonborn they inadvertently rescued by falling into the same ambush.
Jeb approaches Arikon and says, "You were mighty timely with that spell to cause them to slumber. Things might have gone differently without it."
He then addresses the other companions. "John and I found a trail climbing out of the stream and deeper into the woods. It appears our half-orc companion survived the archers after all; but chose to part company with us."
Jeb crosses the bridge to the dragonborn and extends his right hand in greeting. "The names Jeb. Nice to see we weren't the only ones to be ambushed by this group. You got a name friend?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"My name is Arikon. It is a pleasure to meet you even under these circumstances.", he announced. "I concur with you. I have no intention to kill unarmed prisoners but we probably need a plan to makesure that they won't warn the others in their lair.", he continued. "But first tell us friend, how did you end up here?"
Jeb crosses the bridge to the dragonborn and extends his right hand in greeting. "The names Jeb. Nice to see we weren't the only ones to be ambushed by this group. You got a name friend?"
Sharloon nodded at both figures and shook multiple sets of hands as the group came about and around him. "Thank you. It's nice to meet you."
"I'm afraid my story isn't all that fantastic or helpful. I was on the road when I spotted a dwarf and human warrior walking towards me in the distance. I continued toward them and was about to hail them (safer while on the road) when several arrows flew out at me. I saw movements just to the side of me and caught a glimpse of goblins out of the corner of my eye...then, I was knocked to the ground. My head was ringing and my vision went black. As I was losing consciousness, I heard the neighing and screaming of the dying horses. I heard a small fight break out, cursing, and metal striking metal, the sound of two bodies being dragged through the dirt..."
"I recall...nothing more...until I heard you all engaged with this goblin ambush."
Rubbing his blood matted mane absently, Sharloon seemed to be in thought a moment. "I actually have no idea how long I was unconscious. I do know my gear was stripped and I suppose I was left for dead...," the dragonborn paused a moment and flashed a toothy smirk to Jeb's left at seemingly nothing. "Of course you trained me better than that...(slight pause) I think a headache that feels like an Ogre used my head for a kick ball is lesson enough..."
"Anyway, (returning his gaze to Jeb and Arikon) I thank you for your greeting. I hope that I may be of service? My master seems to think that aiding your group would be in alignment with the desires of the universe. And, he has taught me, over these many years, to never argue with the universe..."
OOC:After intro's are in order - Sharloon will aid/help/work on some of the points discussed in the ooc thread.
Removing the cart and any material the group thinks appropriate off the road. Once off the road, try to find a good secure spot to camp for a long rest. As mentioned earlier he will try and secure a spear or short sword and a couple of daggers if any are in reasonable condition nearby. He will also suggest gathering up the caltrops and any other supplies from the nearby bodies that might be useful for the purposes of securing the camp and/or potentially trapping the exterior of the nearby goblin cave. If investigation is required 9
Marching Order (per DM request) - Sharloon is currently at 1 hp. However, unless indicated otherwise by a more heavily armored party member he will be happy to move to the front of any group line/order.
In camp, he will be eager to assist in any way needed (feel free to write him in on simple tasks if they further your posts, etc) and when nothing else remains to occupy his time he will sit with his back against a tree and begin to carve a small bit of wood. He tends to like to create small animal shapes in his carvings, etc.

Jeb assists with pushing/pulling the wagon from the road to a more concealavle location. He also assists in searching the goblins for any usable weapons, arrows, or other gear they may be in possession of.
He would ask John to assist him in these tasks to keep his mind focused on tasks and not the lethal outside world he has embarked into.
Arikon nodded towards Jeb saying, "We were lucky that they moved closer together during the fight. Made it a lot easier to knock them out." The young sorcerer was proud that he did contribute to the small victory they had achieved.
He then listened to the elaborations of their new dragonborn ally. "I think I'll speak for the others when I say that we would gladly accept your assistance as long as the danger persists.", he announced. He sighed before continuing, "We may know this dwarf and human you encountered. Could you describe them?"
If they truly were Gundren and Sildar there would be no other way forward than to try and save them.
(ooc: if a rest is initiated, Arikon would assist in every he could. While marching he would stay to the rear of the column)
After some discussion, the party agrees to rest and lick their wounds before continuing the search for their captured employers.
The wagon is fastened with rope and slowly tugged off the road, while Sharloon and Jeb search and secure the goblins' weapons. They find a number of crude weapons: shortbows, shortswords, and daggers, all dented and rusted. Though they still have a sharp edge, they make for a poor killing implement for anyone other than untrained goblins. No spears, however. More interesting are the three clay flasks that were also recovered. A quick sniff reveals that they are full of flammable oil.
The smell around the ambush site is starting to become unbearable as you set up camp a hundred yards off the road, concealed by thickets. After completing the work, it is late-afternoon. When the captured goblins realize that they won't be released, the female yells, "Dirty humans! Liars, all of you. When Klarg finds you, he will feed you to his wolves!"
John silently cooks dinner. He has calmed down, but seems to be in deep thought. He confides in Jeb, "Thank you for keeping my mind occupied, but it's time for me to face what just happened. Everything is just so different from the stories. I'm glad you still have faith in me."
He sighs.
"I think you deserve an explanation for me acting up. My grandparents lived in a small village at the border. They hated the rush and bustle of the city, and moved once my parents took over the tavern.
Then, the first goblin migrations happened. Their village was last seen in flames, burning to the ground. There were no survivors."
John grips his dagger tightly, and looks Jeb in the eye.
"I know that you plan to take the trail to the goblin lair tomorrow. I'm coming with you. The others may object, but I don't care. It's time those goblins paid for what they did to my grandparents years ago."
At the camp site, Sharloon has cut off the branch of a sturdy oak tree and has started whittling at it, fashioning it into a quarterstaff. As the sun falls, it's relatively quiet as the party establishes a watch and begins sleeping for the night. After a few hours, that changes.
A drum beat echos from the forest. It gets louder, as more drums sound out. A bit farther off, the the howling of wolves rings in the night. It sounds like there's a lot of them. In the thickets surrounding the camp, you catch glimpses of goblins sneaking around at the edge of your sight. They take a quick peek before immediately running off. This happens frequently, but otherwise they don't make a move to attack you or disturb your sleep.
Five hours into your rest, Sharloon and Murmen are currently on watch when a single goblin emerges from the thickets. He's quite large for his race, and he carries a tree branch around which a pair of dirty white breeches is tied. As he speaks, you notice his sharp canines are chipped.
"Truce! I wish to parley!"
(You haven't finished your long rests yet. Anyone who wishes to use the goblins' weapons can only add half their proficiency bonus to their attack roll).

Vaxia cut a bit deep with her words. "I aim to keep my word." Zee said truthfully "How are we to know you wont go back to Klarg or even Grol. We will not hurt you and once we are done with all of this I give my word you two are free. I hope you understand" he said with a tender voice. Persuasion: 16
Later that night, Zee was unsettled by the drums and constant peeking of the goblins that seemed to surround them. He wasn't sure how many there were, so Zee could't help but stay up.
Eventually one came out and asked to "Parley." Zee wasn't sure if that was a big word for him or not and hope is wasn't. He also wondered if the goblin misunderstood it's own advantage.
"Well if there's no disagreement," Zee looks to the others" Parley on Mr. uhhhhh...." Zee trailed off, giving the chipped tooth goblin time to respond.
When the goblin hears Zee, he bares his chipped teeth at him.
"Don't treat me like child. I am Yeemik, and I am smart goblin. I have lived thirty years, while most of my kind are dead by ten."
Yeemik comes a bit closer, raising his white flag above his head to show he is unarmed.
"We found the bodies around the bridge. You are good fighters, but maybe not the best planners. Klarg knows you are here, and has started the drums of war. At dawn, his will ride his wolves out to attack you."
He points at Vaxia.
"You have captured two of us. Most humans would kill us on sight, knowing that goblins do not value individual tribal members and would not accept a ransom. Perhaps you are not bad people, so maybe we can make a deal. We have the human Sildar. He told me that he knew who you are and that you would rescue him from our cave. That is bad idea. We have increased our guards, and everyone is on high alert. You would be shot down before stepping a single foot inside."
Yeemik grins.
"However, that can be changed. I am second-in-command to Klarg. He is bad boss. He beats us goblins and sends us on suicide missions. He does not care for our lives. It is time that he got what he deserves. He is in his den now, sharpening his metal club for the morning. He would not be prepared for a counterattack. I can order the guards to leave their post at the front entrance. You can sneak inside, and there is a hidden way into his den. Kill him."
He relishes the words as he says them.
"If you do this, I will give Sildar back to you, as long as you return Vaxia and her mate to us. What do you say?"

Jeb stands to the right of Murmen. He catches his eye and nods his head in a sign that he is awake and prepared to aid in their defense should the meeting escalate. I'd personally really like the idea of taking out the Bugbear will less risk to the party if possible. I like the idea of having the Goblins have some skin in the game since we can't inherently trust them. Does anyone have any magic that would aid in this situation? If we can have even a little assurance that Yeemik is legit I vote we sneak in and take out the bugbear.
Lastly, DM did we get the Short Rest benefits yet or no? I think you mentioned it had been 5 hours? Just clarifying. Thanks!

(You will be able to finish your long rest. You can also get short rest benefits now, if you’d like).
Sharloon looks at Yeemik, but he seems sincere in his desire to have Klarg killed. After circling around behind him, he’s now in position inside a thicket directly behind Yeemik.
Murmen and Jeb stand in front of Yeemik. The goblin raises his eyebrow.
“I want Klarg dead even more than you would. The human Sildar is of little worth for us anyways. This is not a complicated deal. You are gaining much for this, for little risk.”
Jeb sighs deeply as he believes the goblin <Passive Insight 16> and says, "We all play the hands we're given; but I believe the goblin. With that said, if we trust you and enter the lair, any of your kind that brandishes a weapon or attacks us will be put to the sword." If none of the others contradict him, Jeb continues as he addresses the goblin "Get your people out and we will rescue Solder and deal with Klarg"
Arikon was slow to react to the commotion around him and awakes only slowly. The travel and especially the recent fight against the goblins took a toll on him. When he realized what was going on the negotiations with this Yeemil were already in full swing. From what he could gather, it seemed like the goblin's plan had some merit. The real question was if you could trust that he wouldn't betray you after the deed was done.
He adressed the others quietly so that the goblin wouldn't hear the conversation, "Of course we can't trust him. He is a goblin after all. The second we kill this 'Klarg' he will turn on us and even if wouldn't, the goblins will keep ambushing other caravans." He paused for a second, "But if we play our cards right we might be able to deal with them separately."
Amazed at the eloquence and intelligence of Yeemik, the leader of this goblin tribe. "I for one agree to this deal. I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. Plus, if they wanted us dead they would do it right now. No, I believe Yeemik, but there one thing I request. Have some of your warriors fight along side us. It would help your people's pride. You will be able to say that your fought as well and not relied on anyone, only had the balance tip a bit in your favor, eh?"
Yeemik waits patiently as you discuss, and smiles when you agree with his terms.
"Excellent! You have made good choice to ally with Yeemik. Here is how this will happen. You have a few hours to finish your rest and to prepare, but you must strike before dawn. Travel down the trail in the woods until you arrive at the cave. Then, you must signal me to lower the guards somehow..."
Yeemik scratches his head, thinking.
"Ah! Yeemik likes birds. Some birds sing in day, some in night. When you come close to the cave, whistle this."
Yeemik makes an off-key attempt at mimicking a song thrush, but grins ear to ear after doing so.
"I will be close by, waiting. When I hear you, I will tell the guards to go. You will know as the drums will stop beating. Then, you must act fast, or Klarg will get suspicious.
A stream flows into the cave. Follow the stream down and enter the first room on the right. That is the kennel, where Klarg keeps his wolves. They are chained up now, but will attack if you get close. Take care of them. In the far end of the room, there is a natural fissure, a sort of chimney leading from the kennel up to Klarg's den. He uses it to feed his wolves, but won't be expecting intruders from there. Climb it. Kill him."
Yeemik's eyes have taken a hungry look as he describes his plan to you. He turns to Zee.
"I wish I could help you more, but I can't. Only two other goblins know of my plan, ones that I'm confident won't tattle to Klarg to increase their daily servings of food. But, we will cut off Klarg's exit. If he runs, we will be waiting with our bows."
He laughs out loud.
"I will make sure our scouts stop disturbing your rest. You'll need it. I hope to see you soon."
Yeemik walks off, fading away into the thickets. As he leaves, Jeb's gambler senses start tingling. Though everything Yeemik seemed to be telling the truth, Jeb has the feeling that he is leaving something out, not telling the whole story...
After three more hours, your long rest is finished. As you started early, during late-afternoon, it is still dark but won't be for long. During your preparations, you look at the items you recovered from the goblin ambush. Three flasks of oil, along with enough caltrops to fit three bags. Hopefully, you can make good use of them.
Otherwise, you are ready for your preemptive strike. Good luck.
(Long rest is finished. Clerics, if you change your spell lists please tell me. I'd like to remind Murmen of his ability to turn a non-magical item into a magical one. Remember, because it is dark, everyone is blinded except Murmen, who has disadvantage on Perception checks and a -5 to Passive Perception due to darkness becoming dim light. You'll likely need a light source.
Sharloon, you have carved a quarterstaff during your rest and can add it to your inventory. I'd also like to know who is claiming the caltrops and the oil? Otherwise, does anyone want to do anything quick before going to the trail? If not, you'll start moving).
After the goblins leave, Jeb will share his suspicions with the others. "I believe the goblin is telling the truth about assisting us to get into the lair and deal with the boss, Klarg; but once done he will no doubt bring the guards to try and slay us. He thinks he has an ace up his sleeve. We need to be aware that the betrayal will happen; but not until his rival is handled."
In the morning, Jeb offers a dagger hilt first to the Dragonborn as he sees his finished quarterstaff. He says to to Sharloon, "It's best to have a back up weapon. One could do much worse than a dagger, friend."
Once everyone is ready, Jeb draws his short sword and lights a torch from the remains of the fire to light his way in the dark before the dawn.

Sleep didn't come easy to Arikon after the goblin had left. Yeemik was eager to turn traitor on his leader Klarg and there was nothing stopping him to traitor on them after they did his dirty work. 'Jeb was completely right! They will turn on us.', he thought as he lay sleepless on the ground. He felt tired when he awoke again and it took him a little bit the ready himself for the march towards the giblon hideout. "Good morning, everyone.", he would greet them ironically considering the fact that dawn hadn't even come yet.
Once everyone was ready, he would fall in behind Jeb who lit a torch to guide them through the darkness.
