"Indeed, am I. Discuss this later, we must. Widespread panic, there must not be. But yes, join you, I will. After all, too dangerous to go alone, it is."
Alton eyes this odd Tortle warily. He instinctively reaches for a dagger and spins it in his palm. “The names Alton,” he says curtly, sheathing the dagger before holding the same hand outwards to Ralfaen.
He then turns to Professor Landy, his ears perking at the sound of the payment. “Of course, we would love to help you out! Glad to hear our good deeds are making their way through the city.” He then turns and brings Gotur in closely.
”We’re on the verge of hitting it big!” Alton whispers. “What are your thoughts about this whole ordeal? I’ll only do this if you’re coming as well.”
Ralfaen, we will assume you actually were already in the inn, so you heard her entire spiel.
Your intuitions tell you that the halfling professor is not misleading the party in any way, or is not being dishonest with anything she has mentioned. However, there are likely numerous details about the task at hand that she hasn't told you yet without anyone asking her anything as of yet.
Alton, Professor Landy replies: "Oh gosh, such pleasant folk! Well, let's make haste then shall we? I will give you all of the details on our trip as it's gonna take us two sleeps to get there! And I can answer any questions you might have too. Oh before I forget... here's the coins." She hands the pouch of 500gp to Alton.
((Feel free to ask her any questions you want before the departure. The trip will take approximately 3 days, so make sure you have rations and/or be prepared to hunt or scavenge for food. The party will have to camp for sleep, likely. There may or may not be an encounter as well. I am going to post a map tomorrow morning as well of the area where the Havel's Cross is as well as the dig site as it relates to Neverwinter. I will leave it now with you guys for the night and make the next posts tomorrow AM.))
"Ho oh oh! Questions for you Professor Landy, I have. Mmmm... expecting on this journey, what dangers should we be? The discovery that you have found, what is? The discovery so important, why is?"
Translation: "Ho ho ho! I have questions for you, Professor Landy. Mmmm... what dangers should we be expecting on this journey? What is the discovery that you have found? Why is the discovery so important?"
Ralfaen, the professor smiles at you and says "oh hello Mr. Tortle-man! Oh golly pardon my manners, Ralfaen, is it now? The way I see it, the more folk we have for the escort the safer we'll all be. I don't know I can trust ye, although if yer seekin' out these here lads for somethin' then you must be on the good side of the fight as they say. Love ta have ya join the help. May I call you Ralf?"
She answers your questions:
"I won't lie to ye... the area we are travellin' to isn't the safest of places. Hell it might even be a bit dangerous, you know, with goblins and wolves and the like. We're headed 3 days nor'east of Neverwinter, almost to the tip of the Neverwinter Wood. That's where the lodge is. All of the other members of my team will be there waitin' for us, so don't worry. The whole lot of 'em. I trust 'em with my life. Been workin' with them for over 3 years now!"
"Oh my good man, er, I mean my good tortle, I have no idea what they've found in the ruins. It seems that it's not likely gold, jewelry or the like... they wouldn't get word to me this quick if it was just somethin' as simple as that. I have a feelin' it's perhaps some artifacts from the Elven death cult that used to occupy the ruins!"
"Why is it important?! Why, history, of course! Us archeologist-types just love discovering secrets and ways of life from the past... ahem... even if the past involves an Elven death cult *gulp*."
To review:
- Professor Landy is part of an archeology team.
- The team has found something interesting in a dig site at an old ruins site which apparently was the home of an evil Elven death cult many years ago.
- The dig site is approx. 3 days away by foot from Neverwinter.
- The team requires an escort to bring what they found back to Neverwinter.
- The team is waiting at Havel's Cross, which is a lodge located close to the dig site. The professor is coming with you.
I have added a new tab in our google sheet which is a section of northeast sword coast. The trip will start from Neverwinter, head up following the high road, and then veering north-east. The general vicinity of the lodge as well as the dig site is located in the red circle X.
I will post the start of the travel soon! If you plan on hunting/foraging for food at any point, please roll your survival checks now, depending on how many days you want to attempt. Otherwise it is rations for 3 days. I will likely also ask for other checks once we get going but stay tuned. Lastly, let me know who is leading the way, how you are travelling, etc. Professor Landy likely would want to stay in the back, chatting likely too much about nothing in particular. Feel free to chat with her or each other, or not.
"Beg pardon, Ralfaen, but to put it blunt, you seem a bit... well... old. I don't got a tactful way of saying it, so I'll come right out. You seem old to be wandering the roads. If me and Alton here are getting hired on by the Professor to keep her safe, I just want to make sure that we're not also going to need to be your caretakers if you insist on tagging along. If your back goes out, I'm not going to be able to carry you and keep an eye out for trouble. Maybe you'd be more comfortable here until we return, and then we can help you with whatever it was you were looking for us to help with?"

Gotur, the professor heard your comments to Ralfaen. She raises one eyebrow and looks at the tortle "ahem... you ARE able, aren't ye? I mean, this is only an escort mission as such... although like I mentioned, the terrain is a bit rough closer to the lodge. And well, you never know what kind of things we may run into on the high road anyhow. Jeepers I've met a fair share of nutballs travellin' that road!"
"Oh oh ho! Able to come on the journey, I am. Offensive and defensive magics that can protect me, I have. Mmmmm... demonstrate, would you like me to?"
Translation: "Ho ho ho! I AM able to come on the journey. I have offensive and defensive magics that can protect me. Mmmmm... would you like me to demonstrate?"
"Hmmmmm......" the halfling rubs her chin. "Yes, yes I would!" she says, not so much that she doesn't believe you can handle yourself, but more that she wants the bit of entertainment before the party starts their long 3 day journey. "This way, the big guy will feel better, too!"
(You all are outside of the inn right now, very close to the outskirts of the city, discussing whether or not Ralfaen should accompany the party. There are people around, entering and exiting the city, as well as guards standing about. Although no one is listening directly to your conversations. It is mid-morning and a beautiful late summer's day. Just to keep in mind!)
Ralfaen starts to spin the staff around in his hands slowly, but then the spinning picks up, getting more and more rapid. He then starts to rise into the air, hovering a couple inches off the ground as he lets go of the staff, which starts to spin on it's own in front of him. The spinning has now picked up to what would be the speed of a jet plane turbine as three white, spectral shovels burst out of the staff! They fly into the air as they combine and form into a spectral raven, which zooms back and does a couple of circles around the party before impacting with the ground, sending tiny white feathers everywhere.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
You all gather just on the outskirts of town, perhaps a bit off into the light woods as to not gather attention. Professor Landy watches with amazement as Ralfaen's display of magic prowess is now clear to her. She's especially impressed with the initial levitation and then just of course the entire thing. She cowers a bit into her purple cloak when the spectral raven swoops down and around the party a few times.
"Woooaaaahh! Yip yip yeeehaw! That was wild! Hmm you did mention something about ravens did you not? Bah, no matter. I'm impressed. That alone'd scare most folk off. Listen, I don't have an issue with Ralf comin' along with us." she looks at Gotur"as long as you're ok with it, big guy?!"she winks at Gotur, gives Alton a huge smile as well, and the party starts their journey north on the high road towards the Havel's Cross lodge to meet Landy's dig team.
It is a beautiful morning with the late morning sun glaring down on the horizon. There is a comfortable breeze coming off the sea to the west, and you can every so often hear the glorious sounds of nature coming from the Neverwinter wood to the east. The road is unusually quiet for this time of day, although you can see that the traffic is starting to pick up maybe an hour or so into the walk. 81 For the most part of the day, you see the normal type of folk who travel the road. Merchants with small carts, folks on horseback and various elves, dwarves and humans just walking like yourselves getting from point A to point B. "Normal" looking folk. No one interacts with you.
However, around mid afternoon, you all notice someone who catches your eye. A seemingly young woman with pink hair. A bit lavishly dressed. She is pushing a small cart along the road. She is dancing as she is stepping and stops as she sees you all:
"Oh! Hello! Bubbles is my name, and mixing things is my game! I got everything from acid to ale! From alchemists fire to potions of heal! I got a special right now, three for the price of one! Come on, what do you say?! Any of you guys into mixing things?"
The professor doesn't engage with her. She rolls her eyes when she sees how the alchemist is dressed, though.
If any of you want to interact with this woman, feel free.
If not, the party will trudge forward and will camp soon.
