When the crystal ball is activated, the sphere turns completely black and light radiates from its surface, shifting colors as the light swirls around the orb. The black void expands in size until it reaches a ten foot diameter. A low hum begins to rise from the planar gateway as the darkness fades to a hazy gray, gradually revealing the interior of a moderately sized room, filled with a heaping, tangled mass of wreckage. This consists of old machine parts, broken relics of Kwalish’s earliest experiments, dead energy cells, and the like. This appears to be some sort of hoard, however, as the walls of the room are lined with all sorts of magic items (literally everything listed in the DMG). There is movement in the room, however, as several shadows can be seen dancing across the floor.
ooc: If you're overwhelmed by that list, here are a few suggestions, but ultimately I decided to run this by the book, which is exactly what it says - every magic item in the DMG.
animated shield necklace of fireballs Staff of Power Holy Avenger Defender Helm of Brilliance figurines - ivory goats, serpentine owl
Huarache looks around for some sort of round object, like a marble or a ball bearing, just anything that can roll. If he finds something, he'll Magically Tinker it so that it has a 5/5 bright/dim light, and then toss it through the portal, letting it roll across the floor.
"Oh wait," Omiy remembers she has a driftglobe. She pulls out a small glass sphere and activates it, the crystal globe emanates light in a peaceful, reflective blue. She lets it float through the portal and lights the shadows in the room.
Clarification: You can see in the room. the shadows are of the figures (creatures) moving around inside the room, but on the other side of the gate. Actually, if some of you are on the other side of the thing, I guess you would see them, so I'll just go ahead and tell you now. There are a bunch of humanoids wearing hooded cloaks, who are quietly moving items out of the room through what seems to be the only exit. They seem unaware of the appearance of a portal within the room.
(given that clarification, I'm not sure if you still want to throw something in there, but if you do, it goes through and lands in the room as if it were the same space you inhabit, that is it does not lose or gain speed, change size, etc. Notably, it does not make a sound if it hits the floor. Let me know if you are still throwing stuff in there.
You watch anxiously as five cowled monks attack Echo with varios simple tools and staffs, attempting to grapple it her with these implements (grappled on hit, DC10 escape)
"Wait, wait, don't attack!" Omiy calls out as she sees Huarache's metal dog gets attack by the cloaked figures, she waves her hand to get their attention, "we mean no harm... we're just tracing Kwalish’s footsteps. Kwalish, do you know him? He built these portals."
The monks look around the room, utterly unaware of where the mechanical dog came from. They do not show any indication of hearing the words spoken from the other side of the portal.
(I mentioned earlier things thrown through the portal would not make a sound if they hit the ground on the other side. I could have made it clearer that you cannot hear them and now I will state that they cannot hear you across the portal. I guess a paper plane note would work, though.)
"I do not believe that is the right portal." Leann says with a frown. "Seems more a storage portal than one that leads to the inventor we are seeking." She glances to the others. "Do we wish to check it out anyway, or should we get the construct out of there?"
Perceptive observers may note that the monks no longer seem to be poking Echo, but surrounding her with the evident attempt to subdue and restrain her.
>Do consider that, to them, a robot dog just appeared from thin air in a room where they keep ALL the magic stuff<

Seeing that they don’t seem to hear her, Omiy will step into the portal and repeat the same thing.
The monks seem alarmed, gripping their weapons and taking fighting stances. From behind the five who hold Echo in place, an elder monk, leaning on his staff, his back ujnched slightly approaches, the crowd parting to let him pass.
"You are not the first to come searching for Kwalish. None have found him as yet, but he was indeed here once, long ago. Why don't you come join us and we can tell you what we know?" He entreats Omiy.

Omiy eyes the older man to see if what he says is true. (Insight: 3)
"What do you know about him?" She asks curiously, leaving her echo behind, she approaches the elder monk, "and please let our dog go, she's a good girl. I'm sure. "
"Kwalish founded this place, that much I know. The Grand Master woukd know more. I'm sure he'd like to meet you," the priest replies.
He pauses, briefly, then states, "You said 'our dog,' yet I see only you standing here. How many of you are there, exactly?" He asks as the monks begin looking cautiously around the room. More begin to file in through the door to see what the commotion is; there are at least twenty.
“Yeah see, she’s actually my friend, Huarache’s dog, he’s an engineer and he’s really good at building stuff; and there’s Leann, she’s kind of cold when you first met her but she’s actually really nice and cares about others; and Sigurd, Shutorn, and Sam... and hey, here’s Hondo!” Omiy welcomes Hondo and nudges back, “this gentleman here seem to know a lot about Kwalish. And oh, I’m Omiy. “

Huarache will use his spyglass to see whether the monks have body heat. If they do, he will also come through the portal, saying, "I'm the Huarache whom Omiy here mentioned. I apologize for startling you with Echo; would you please release her?"If they do so, he will cast Mending to heal Echo for 10 hit points.

Leann would stand ready as the others hook up the playground one.

I didn't want to use anything that's inherently magic; I just made something magic real quick.

Okay probably no then, I’ll let my driftglobe hang by the garage.
Huarache will direct Echo through there to see what happens.
OOC: I've had enough time to build Sun Blades; I think I've had enough time to rebuild my [Tooltip Not Found], a greyhound named Echo.
