Rose responds to Tio's question by pointing to the dollhouse and saying "There's a secret door in the attic."
To Gillain's questions, Rose says: " We don't know what happened to Walter. We don't like to go out of this room, the monster in the basement is too scary."
Rose pauses a moment then says: "Do you really have to go? We could stay here and play."she says with apprehension.
Thorn speaks up: "Please, can you stay here and play with us?"
Ermren shakes his head, "Are all human children so consumed with play that it lingers after death? No, children, we can't play. We have responsibilities to attend to, not to mention a monster in the basement."
Gillain takes a sack out of her pack, and places the remains gently inside. She sinches up the top and ties it to her pack.
She breaths a deep sigh and says to the boy and the girl, “We’re going to find your brother, then we’re going to take care of this monster. Stay in here...”.
She then gets a stick of chalk out of her pack and holds it up to the kids, “You know what a paladin is?.... ...I, am a paladin!” She says, puffing herself up a bit, to look heroic. “Paladins protect people from monsters, and this is my Paladin’s chalk”. She draws a simple line in the doorway, spanning the width of the entrance. “You stay in here, and no monster will be able to cross this line, you hear me??... We’ll lay you to rest when we’re done”.
She clicks her heels together and salutes with her fist across her chest and a small nod of the head. Then she leaves the room, ready to continue.
DM: Toi had been investigating the dollhouse during the conversation. If James and Toi want to combine efforts, giving one of you advantage on the roll I am more than happy to allow it. DC is 13.
Bob shakes his head adamantly when the children as them to stay and play with them. Plastered against the wall like very hairy wallpaper he continues to mutter, "'S not natural. Not natural!"
On her way out of the room, Gillain places a hand briefly on Bob’s shoulder, and whispers kindly, “We’ve got a chance to set things right here: to restore the natural order of things... I know it’s hard... Remember that you’re looking on the victims here. They are just children... in desperate need of our help. Do not fear them... Look upon them kindly, as you would a baby bird, broken and fallen from its nest...”. She gives him a genuine, kind smile, and will eventually leave him, to move out of the room.
With both Toi and James looking over the dollhouse they find that in the room the party has not explored yet, in the northeast corner of that room, is a sliding panel. The panel slides open to a secret set of steps that seem to go down.
Gillain handles the remains with great care. Shouldering the pack she turns to go when Thorn cries out:
"No, don't leave us! I won't let you!"
The party is shocked as the young boy apparition rushes towards Gillain, wisps of ethereal smoke trailing behind him, and he leaps at Gillain. The spirit of Thorn seems to vanish as it penetrates Gillain's body. Gillain reacts by gasping and is unsteady on her feet for a moment, using her spear to hold herself up.
Gillain turns to go and the little boy cries out. She looks round, just in time to see him leap up and vanish into her!...“No!...”, she gasps, and staggers back clutching her chest.
She just about manages to hold herself up using her spear, and gasps again, and again, like a fish out of water... Like a baby breathing air for the first time, eyes wide...
“What’s happening?!...” she cries out, staring at Bob, and Tio, and then everyone in turn. There’s panic in her eyes and they seem to be pleading with each of her companions ((were her eyes that colour before??)). “What’s happening?!...”.
Bob immediately runs over to Gillain, distress etched into every line of his face. "Ye alright, lass? What happened to the wee ghosty?" He looks behind her, expecting to see the little tyke's spirit running off, but sees nothing.
As Bob looks over Gillain’s shoulder, behind her, she jumps and spins round, “What?!.. What’s there?!!....”, she shouts in alarm.
Then she backs gingerly away from whatever-Bob-thinks-he-sees in the hall. She backs right into the middle of the room almost exactly where the children’s remains were found.
She slowly sits down, on the floor, pulling her knees up to her chest... and she pulls her shield up in front of her. “What.. is.. it?..” She whispers, “What’s.. out.. there??..”.
Bob turns back around, having seen nothing of the ghost running away down the corridor but freezes in place halfway through a step toward Gillain. His eyes glass over for a second and he shudders before blinking rapidly. He had been about to protest, to insist that Gillain had never shown anything but skill with her preferred weapon, but now he was marching imperiously toward her and attempting to grab the spear from her hands.
"Now, now young one. You might hurt someone with that - I'll take care of it for you, you might put an eye out!" His tone was kind yet firm, almost mothering, but with a hint of reproach like he simply didn't have time for Gillain's childish fearfulness. "As for what's out there, missy, is our way out of here! So, what did we learn from the dollhouse, then?"
Gillain’s eyes flick to James. Then in a tiny voice, she says, pleading, “Not my spear!.. please no!... The monster?!..... it’ll get me. Don’t take my spear?.....”.
And as Bob approaches, there’s a flash of recognition in her eyes, that emboldens her slightly. “No!! You’re always taking my things!... It’s not fair!!.... Get your own spear. I saw it first! It’s mine!!.......”.
She still cowers there, sat on the floor, clutching her shield and spear, eyes flitting to each of her companions in turn. She looks scared and almost ready to cry...
Bob scoffs and throws up his hands in exasperation. "Fine, you're such a baby sometimes. Keep your silly spear, but don't come running to me if you hurt yourself with it! Here, you need to eat."
Bob casts Goodberry and lets the berries fill his palm before he hands one first to Gillain and then one to everyone else in the group. "Eat up if you're feeling down, they'll cheer you right up!"
Gillain’s eyes light up, when Bob offers her a goodberry. Everything else, instantly forgotten. “Ooh, ooh, yum!! I love those!”. She kneels up and takes it greedily. And chews it, smiling adoringly at Bob all the while.
DM: The party takes a moment to observe the incident and odd behavior. James and Toi have found the secret door to the basement and all of the party stands ready to pounce on Gillain if she is indeed possessed and turns against the party.
Ermren looks to the ghost of the sister, "What did your brother do this woman to make her so childish? And make him stop. We have work to be about and no time for this foolishness."
