As Jamesgets out of the bucket, he looks off towards the more western tunnel, lost in thought for a moment, but snaps out of it and follows the others as they head into the first area.
Jamessmiles at Gilginsenthusiasm and pulls out his pick and gets stuck in helping to dislodge the geodes from the walls.
You spend about an hour breaking of rocks to remove 3 geodes from the walls. It is close to midnight, but you could go another hour if you would like to.
Nyxshared all the food with the kobols and tried to chat them up as much as possible about their culinary traditions and way of life. She's seen quite a lot of the world and different cultures, by her own measure at least, which brings her to share her own experiences and ask the kobolds on their understanding of human(oid) ways, etc.
The kobolds are not so much interested in humanoids but they can tell you stories about dragons. There favoured one is about an ancient white dragon that lives up here in the north for over a thousand years, who has some kind of humanoid dragon rider. Scrol swears that he has seen them in the sky over Kelvins Cairn flying east, a few month before the eternal winter started. Trex himself is not so much into the dragon talk but he is asking you where you have traveled during your lifetime.
Gilgin, finishing his lesson rolls the geode in his fingers. “And that..... is how it’s done!” He chuckles. “So pals, wanna try and get more of these? Or see if there’s something more valuable down the other tunnel?”
Gilgin seems to be in very high spirits. “I gotta say laddies, this has felt... good. Time’s have been dark lately, but digging with ye’, well it reminds me of home with me brothers. Y’know, when you do real, rewarding work together, you forge bonds stronger than the greatest smithwork.”
Hifu smiles at Gilgin, “Indeed my brother dwarf. It is a pleasure mining with you. But I would like to know what is down the passageway, and to check out where Trex and his tribe were staying.”

The three of you move on to the next cave. James is the first to spot it, a fossilized skull partially juts out of the east wall of this small cave, five feet off the ground. The skull has larger than normal eye sockets, a curious ridge between the eyes, nothing that would pass for a nose, and four small holes where one would expect to see teeth.

James is trying to work out what creature it was and how it may have gotten embedded in the rock. He is also trying to ascertain how the skull was uncovered (mining or natural rock movement?). And if it is safe to touch or try to extract.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Hifu investigates the skull as well, helping James. Trying to recall if he has seen a skull structure like this and ascertain how and why it is stuck in the rock like this.

Hifu has literally no clue about this, he is fascinated and his jaw drops seeing this most unusual skull.
"Gilgin, come over here and have a look at this. Strange! Was this buried in the rock?"
You do not recognise the skull, but it kind of looks like it is part of the stone. It could have been stuck there because of magic, maybe a natural desaster or something else. The rocks around it are chipped away with tools, it looks as if the miners stop digging. Why, you can only guess.
Kravek sits at the fire listening to the kobolds tell tales about a dragon. Unsure how much he should really believe.
Replying to Trex I come from a place far south of here from Elturgard, east of Baldurs gate. I doubt you will of heard of it but it is many tendays travel from here. I have come to see where my people have lived for many years. To find out about their religion.

I have read books but, i expect the connection with the giant deities is strongest here.
„There are stories about the grave of an ancient Frost Giant King in Icewind Dale, maybe the nomades know something. I am sorry that i can‘t help you more in your pursuit of knowledge.“ Trex replies.
Gilgin nods at James, brandishing his pick. “My Lord kept me alive for something... and those geodes, as beautiful as they are - they’re nout special. Yous two have had yer practise, now it’s time for the real job! Let’s see what this skull ‘ere is all aboot”
Your attempt to pry the skull from the stone causes it to shatter and fall away, revealing a purple crystal shard where the creatures brain would have been. The crystal is already loose in the surrounding wall and should be easy to pry loose.
Yes, Hifu joins in and helps Gilgin with mining. “Wonderful! Show me how you do this properly.”

Trex was staying in this cavern, you still see leftovers from their fireplace, but beside that it looks tidy.
“Seems like they were staying here, next to me lords beautiful gifts, uggh. Let’s check the othrr passage then, these here are small fries!”

James looks to the side and gives a smirk at nobody before turning back to the skull.
"I wonder who's this is, and how it got down here."
James approaches the skull and examines it and the surrounding rock.
"Hhmm..."

James considers,
"I wonder why the Speaker didn't mention that the miners founding this?"
"Maybe they found it at the same time as that creature and the kobold's appeared in the mine..."
"Do we want to see if we can extract it from the rock? Might be worth something to someone."
James considers for a moment more,
"Well, if we can find a scholar or collector this far north, what with all the weather trouble we've been having."
"You could certainly find a buyer in Waterdeep or Baldur's Gate."
