Ioben kicks the lock away and puts the trunk on the ground, shaking his hands as he lets go to try and get rid of the sensation of pins and needles in his fingers.I wonder if that was a warning that would have escalated if I continued to get it wrong?Turning back to the others he calls out. "I think it's safe now. Dormark, do you want to do the honours? You paid for it after all."
“How did you know that Sandu,” asks Dormark cautiously approaching the box, looking at it to see if it still aglow with magic energy. He then pops open the lid if he doesn’t see anything to peek at what is inside.
Dormark - The chest no longer appears to glow with magic. As you cautiously approach it an deep dread fills you. Popping the lid you find...
((Leather-bound book))
... A large leather-bound book with steel hinges and fastenings. A familiar looking symbol is emblazoned on the front. Though the book appears to have a lock on the side you find a small key also contained within the chest - you presume that this fits the lock.
Other than these items a small wooden statuette of a raven in flight is tucked away in the chest. These are the only items you can find.
Galqarin reaches in and gently lifts out the raven, his oversized hands surprisingly delicate. As he does so, he feels a tingling in the hair on the back of his arms. "Pretty bird", he observes, stroking its head lightly. He offers it to the others to inspect.
Sandu watched Ioben take careful precautions on handling the box. It was boobytrapped, as was obvious in hindsight, but the magical discharge seemed to barely have an effect on Ioben. Perhaps the magic had faded over time and he did not receive the full impact the spell once had. Regardless, the box was unlocked and Ioben handed it back over to Dormark to open it.
“How did you know that Sandu,” asks Dormark cautiously approaching the box, looking at it to see if it still aglow with magic energy. He then pops open the lid if he doesn’t see anything to peek at what is inside.
'It was a hunch.'Sandu replied with excitement, '347 BC is the year Strahd conquered Barovia and installed himself as its ruler.' He was about to divulge further on the topic when he suddenly remembered he was supposed to be angry with Dormark. He promptly shut up and directed his focus to the contents of the box. It was a book with key and a little wooden statuette of a raven. The book itself was emblazoned with the same symbol as was on the side of the box. A raven. It was always ravens here in Barovia. Surely there had to be some meaning behind it. Sandu felt a heavy pressure on his chest. Surely?
Intrigued by the book, Sandu instinctively reached into the box to grab it and the key before he even registered he did. It was large, heavy and old. The key looked positively miniscule next to it. He hovered the key next to the keyhole. Part of him wanted to unlock the book. Part of him screamed not to. Not here. Not now.
Sandu sheepishly looked up from the book at the others. 'Pardon.' He smiled somewhat apologetically, 'I, uhm, really like to read.'
“Why would it be that date? Folks usually choose something that would be significant...,” says Dormark pausing to process the information and feelings he had felt. Then he stuffs the book back in the box and quickly latches it. He attempts to stuff the box in his pack hiding it from plain view.
“We can not speak of what we found here. We should return to Madam Eva in the morning and see if we can discuss it there,” says Dormark somehow still able to display the feeling of panic with his metal body.
After finishing her prayer, Valerie returns to the camp and sees others still have not come back to the camp. She slowly approaches the group. "Did you find anything?"
'A book.' Sandu replied to Valerie. On top of everything else that had transpired, he was quite miffed that Dormark had taken the book from him without so much as a word while Galqarin still had his grubby hands all over the wooden raven statuette and could do with it as he pleased.
'Madam Eva told us to find a treasure of knowledge. A book seems like a good fit for that.' Sandu glared at Dormark. 'We could just check what it's about but apparently we first have to clear it with Madam Eva tomorrow morning.'
'On that note,'Sandu turned on his heels, 'I'm going to sit by the fire to try and get something warm in me. It's been a long day and I could use some food.'Adding act to word, he walked over to the campfire and sat down, occasionally glancing at the others to see what their plans for the evening were.
“You do not understand Sandu...,” says Dormark as Sandu moves away. “Look I’ve have my reasons for hiding what we found, we must be careful. We now know Strahd is a magic user. We don’t know if he is spying on us or not. That is why I want to go to Madam Eve’s tent tomorrow. I hope she has the ability to stop his possible scrying,” says Dormark explains his reaction.
Sandu sat on a log and was poking into the fire with a robust branch when he noticed Galqarin suddenly standing too close for comfort. His first instinct was to get away from the bugbear but of the two available escape routes, one involved falling off his improvised seating in a most undignified manner and the other consisted of diving headfirst into a fire. As neither option seemed appealing, he elected to stay as still as possible. Perhaps the bugbear could not see him if he did not move.
He did however ever so slightly turn his head when Galqarin mentioned reading and presented a book. It was small and worn: the complete opposite of the other book he had seen in the past couple of minutes.
'You? Read?' Sandu replied, his eyebrow cocked and his voice disbelieving. He was about to lay into Galqarin when he caught himself having the tiniest smile form in the corner of his mouth. The entire absurdity of seeing a bugbear holding out a book with his elongated arm did much to ease the tension that had crept up Sandu's spine. It was true that Galqarin had not done anything - yet - to aggravate the group and the mutual interest in books, as loathe as he was to call it such, seemed like as good a starting point to interact with the bugbear beyond open hostility. He already had made acquaintances with a metal man so maybe... That aside, it was always good to know your enemy and Sandu figured that whatever the hairy creature considered literature might give him some insight into the bugbear's thoughts.
'Sure.' Sandu raised his hand tentatively. His eyes were trained on Galqarin for any sudden movement. 'Let me see it.'
With things apparently now taken care of, Ioben decides to retrieve the lock and have a closer look. Even if it is no longer enchanted, a working lock could be useful. Ioben inspects the lock to see if this can be reused in the future. Investigation:9
Not getting a response from the others Dormark releases a sigh and walks to camp. He takes the bear trap and kneels over it praying to his God then after a hour the magical hammer appears again. Smacking the trap he transforms it into a gold ingot worth 5 gold.
> 'Sure.' Sandu raised his hand tentatively. His eyes were trained on Galqarin for any sudden movement. 'Let me see it.'
Tentatively, Galqarin stretches out an elongated arm and hands the small book to Sandu, his eyes lingering on his most treasured possession. The book's cover is worn and indecipherable; it would have once been light blue in colour, with some sort of illustration on it.
Inside the cover, there is a blank page which has been scrawled upon in coloured wax. Underneath, you can just make out the inked words, drawn in a fine and practiced hand:
"To our darling daughter"
If you flip through the book, you will see that it contains...
Mary Ann Cotton, she's dead and she's rotten,
Lying in bed with her eyes wide open.
Sing, sing, oh what should I sing?
Mary Ann Cotton, she's tied up with string.
Where, where? Up in the air.
Selling black puddings, a penny a pair.
Mary Ann Cotton, she's dead and forgotten,
Lying in bed with her bones all rotten.
Sing, sing, what can I sing?
Mary Ann Cotton, tied up with string.
Three blind mice, three blind mice,
See how they run, see how they run,
They all ran after the farmer's wife,
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife,
Did you ever see such a thing in your life,
As three blind mice?
Goosey Goosey Gander where shall I wander,
Upstairs, downstairs and in my lady's chamber
There I met an old man who wouldn't say his prayers,
I took him by the left leg and threw him down the stairs.
There was an old woman who lived in a shoe.
She had so many children, she didn't know what to do.
She gave them some broth without any bread
Then whipped them all soundly and put them to bed.
The lock looks like it is able to be used again. However, the 'tingling' magical feeling is no longer there - it appears to be a relatively normal lock.
Day turns into night as the party settles down to the end of a long day. Dormark sets to work on the bear trap, found earlier, a great hammering can be heard throughout. Sandu and Galqarin exchange stories, books, and poetry by the open fire, whilst Baern, Ismark and Ireena huddle listening contently. Ioben can be found inspecting the rather unusual lock previously sealing the old chest. Finally, Valerie can be spotted undertaking her daily prayers, reflecting on the events of the day.

> Sandu and Galqarin exchange stories, books, and poetry by the open fire
It soon becomes apparent that Galqarin cannot actually read, but his love for this book is equally apparent. He listens rapt as Sandu reads out the rhymes, begging him to point at the individual words as he reads them. Eventually, he points to the words written inside the front cover. "What this say?", he quizzes. When Sandu deciphers the handwritten note, Galqarin gently takes the book off him and replaces it in the pocket of his britches, a thoughtful, sad look upon his face. "Why he give to me?", he mutters almost inaudibly.
> a number of Vistani moving around their camp should anyone wish to join them
Galqarin leaves the warmth of the fire and wanders over to the river bank, where a pair of Vistani are skimming stones. "Me try?", he asks. Selecting a suitable stone, he winds up his arm and hurls the stone in an ungainly, but surprisingly effective manner. It bounces at total 4 times before sinking below the running waters.
Unsure if the Vistani pair are impressed or just amused by his performance, he spots a sling hanging from the belt of one of them. Pointing to a fallen log on the distant far bank he challenges, "Can you hit that with sling?"
When Sandu gives Dormark a hard time about the book, the generally upbeat dwarf furrows his brow at the warlock as he walks away.
Baern shrugs at Dormark with regard to Sandu's attitude and asks "do you think he can really do that, Dormark? Scrying? I've never known anyone who could do that." He scratches his head. "Does that mean he can always hear us? We're not going to be near Madam Eva for very long, I don't think. How could we stop it?"
Baern spends his down time listening to the stories but also wandering the Vistani camp talking to anyone friendly at random. He asks just basic questions such as 'where are you from?', 'are you always on the move?' , 'do you meet many travelers such as himself?', 'do you meet many people new to Barovia such as himself?', the nature of the impassible fog, etc. While still trying to fully understand Barovia and the notion of people getting trapped there, what Baern does not ask about are anything about Strahd for general fear of discussing the subject, or anything specific about his mother as he hasn't really put that all together yet either.
Eventually Baern decides he wants to test his magic. He's about to set off into the woods just a hundred feet or so alone, but as night draws in his fear of all things Barovia makes him think better of it. He asks Dormark to join him since he knows magic as well, or if he is busy the dwarf asks his new pal Galqarin to join him just for company, and chooses to stay only at the edge of the wood by the camp and stream. It takes a lot of failure as Baern tries to wish various effects into existence but he eventually, and somewhat randomly, succeeds on a few before finding at least a bit more regularity with his effects. He is soon able to place a glowing light on his handaxe light a torch, chop down a small tree with one swing and a loud crack of thunder, and even shape a small amount of earth with magic. The young dwarf is equally delighted and baffled by these new abilities that have manifested over the last few days.
Returning to the campfire before everyone heads to bed, Baern holds his recently acquired holy symbol and wonders aloud to Valerie, Sandu, Dormark, and Ioben "I don't understand why I can perform some small magic here." "No one in my family does magic, and I've never studied it. Could it be Barovia? I suppose it could be the gods, as I did start to feel a new connection I've never felt before just days before coming here, but why would they choose me? I'm just a stone mason."

Eliza takes her sling and attempts to hit the fallen log:
