Dormark - The maurezhi merely screams in defiance of your words. As your spiritual weapon hammers down on the fiend you notice it feebly attempt to avoid the attack and failing. The giant spectral hammer hits the fiend and it cries out in pain.
((Good spot))
Unfortunately, your mace attack finds only air as the monster desperately side steps it.
Felix - Reeling back from Dormark's attacks, Felix utters some foul words and points its clawed hand towards Sandu. A cracking and splintering sound can be heard from the boxes to Sandu's left as a figure emerges from them; the figure appears to be a partially decomposed body, a boy around the age of 12, their head caved in. A wicked grin spreads across the fiend's face."Get 'em Cedric," it cackles in delight.
Turning it's attention back to Dormark, the fiend lashes out with both it's teeth and claws;
1
Bite: Attack: 10 Damage: 16
Claw: Attack: 10 Damage: 16
Thankfully, both attacks fail to penetrate Dormark's steel shell, scratching off the hardened metal.
Meanwhile, Cedric's ghoul advances on Sandu, arms outstretched it attempts to claw at him;
Claw: Attack: 17 Damage: 10
Wisdom Saving Throw against 'Among the Dead': 12
The ghouls lets out a low, guttural, moan - almost as though it pains the monster to attack the party. Rather than obey the fiend's commands it stands, frozen to the spot, in front of Sandu. It's shoulders slumped.
Ioben - The party seem to be getting the better of the fiend standing in front of you; it writhes and desperately attempts to evade attacks, but it looks worse for wear (the last moves of a creature who knows it's doom is inevitable). Just when the battle seems won, however, you hear a mighty cracking sound as another ghoul bursts forth from one of the crates near Sandu. Currently they see to be locked together in close combat. It is your turn to act.
The attacks were not working. The fiend was taking wounds, but it seemed that little actually hurt it. If there was nothing they could do, maybe the best option was to retreat.
Just then there was a splintering from behind. A low moan and a cry of pain. Risking a quick glance, Ioben saw Sandu set upon by another undead creature. This one also looked like it was very young. Cedric, Felix had said. The other missing child.
Attack: 23 Damage: 5 + Sneak Attack: 10
I am taking new attack rolls since I am changing the action, even though this one hit initially.
Ioben turns, disengaging from the combat and moves to place himself between the party and its new threat. Hoping that Sandu is alright, he attacks the ghoul, trying to ignore the fact that it looks like a child. Rapier Attack: 8 Damage: 7 + Sneak Attack: 3
Ioben ((I will use your initial attack rolls)) - Turning your attention away from the fiend, you are able to easily slip its grasp and make your way to the ghoul. Lashing out with your rapier you catch it in the small of the back, piercing through its rotting flesh. Once more it moans. It turns towards you and, as it does, you notice that your attack has hampered the animated corpse to a greater degree than you initially believed - it can barely stand and it is clear it's body is failing.
Valerie - You stand before the fiend responsible for all the evil currently plaguing the Orphanage. It sways on it's feet in front of you, wounded, desperately attempting to gain the upper hand over the party. Dormark, Galqarin, and Baern all stand alongside you, desperately attempting to dispatch the fiend. Ioben and Sandu are currently locked in combat with Cedric's ghoul, a creation of the fiend, and seem to be winning. It is your turn to act.
Galqarin - In spite of it's injuries, the fiend stands defiantly in front of you. Moments before you watched it manage to successfully evade attacks from both Dormark and Valerie. It smiles at you mockingly, waiting for someone to drop their guard so that it may lash out. However, for the time being, it is your turn to act.
Galqarin also continues to pummel the fiend, even though his blows do not seem to be wholly effective and whatever the extra force that enabled him to restore vitality to Valerie, and drain it from the fiend, now seems depleted.
Raven-headed staff: 23 damage 11
Martial arts: 23 damage 7
((No ki left but max damage rolls, he is really trying!))
Galqarin - You bring the Raven-headed staff crashing down on the fiends head, reeling a little as it makes contact. Unperturbed you proceed to land a number of smaller jabs to the creature, bypassing it's defences. As before, though you have damaged the fiend it seems like it has an unholy resilience to your attacks. The fiend's arrogance seems like a facade now as it is clearly wounded and likely close to death. It uses the windowsill behind it for support as it struggles to stand.
Sandu - You are greeted by a sadly pathetic sight as you witness Cedric's ghoul barely struggle to comprehend what is happening as Ioben's rapier pierces it straight through. You see your true enemy, the maurezhi, clutching desperately at the window behind it, clearly wounded and struggling to stand. It is your turn to decide - do you address the immediate threat of the ghoul, or attempt to dispatch the struggling fiend?
Sandu stood before the ghoul, his arm stretched out with the palm of his hand aimed point-blank at the creature's face. He knew what he had to do, what he ought to do. Yet he found himself incapable of doing so. The creature had shambled towards him, obviously intent on scratching away the flesh from his face with those bony claws, but at the very last moment it had stopped. For the life of him Sandu could not say why. An animalistic instinct to back down from the threat Sandu presented? Were its muscles too far eaten away for it to make a swing? Or perhaps a last shimmer of the life it had before undead had claimed the child? That moan...
Whatever it was, Sandu found himself turning his hand and cupped the side of the undead child's face.
'This isn't your fault.' He said and wiped his thumb across the cheek like one would wipe away a tear. 'This isn't you.'
He let go of the child and moved around it. 'Apologies, Ioben,' Sandu said as he passed the half-elf, 'but I need you to watch my back.'
Sandu moved beyond Ioben and towards the wall. With the way the others were clustered around the fiend, it was the only spot from where he had a clear line of sight. His brow furrowed as he once again brought up his hand in an arcane motion. 'Pleacã.' said Sandu softly, the word dripping with all the bile he could muster for a creature so utterly foul.
OOC Movement ending 3 spaces above Ioben and 3 to the left (against the wall), unless moving diagonally needs more movement? Eldritch Blast aimed at the fiend: (campaign log) - Attack roll 21 - Damage roll 12
Sandu - As you edge around the child ghoul it reaches out and grabs at you. You feel a pang of pain as the sorrowful creatures fingers scratch your skin (dealing 5 slashing damage). Brushing it aside, you have a greater target in mind.
Wisdom Saving Throw against 'Among the Dead': 18
Claw Attack: Attack: 11 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll.
As you extend your arm and release the familiar purple bolts from your hand, you can almost see the fear in the fiends eyes as it desperately clings to the windowsill. The bolts connect with the creature blasting open a large hole in it's chest; Dormark, Galqarin, and Valerie shield themselves from the resulting gore and ichor spraying through the air.
The pitiful fiend stands for a moment more before slumping to it's knees. "Heeeellllppp!"it squeals, before falling forward face-down on the floor. As soon as it does so the Cedric's corpse drops to the group, any magics that were animating it now gone.
You get the tangible feeling that a great weight has been removed from the Orphanage as you stand in silence. The splattered remains of the maurezhi that had been impersonating Felix, as well as the partially decomposed bodies of it's two unfortunate victims create a gruesome scene.
The Orphanage Fight is over.
((ALL - Ridding St. Andral's Orphanage of the maurezhi threat is another milestone in the campaign. As such, next long rest everyone will gain enough experience to level to 4! Congratulations!))
Apologies, Ioben,' Sandu said as he passed the half-elf, 'but I need you to watch my back.'
Ioben watched as Sandu scrambled past, turning back he squared up to face off against the fiend i front of him. As he prepared to strike a pitiful cry rose up behind him and the creature in fro t of him fell to the floor. Carefully, Ioben reaches out, prodding it with his blade to see if there was any response. When nothing happened, he moved over to the first corpse to retrieve his dagger. Picking it up, he gave it a thorough clean and slipped it back into his belt.
Valerie tries to calm her breath down after the battle. She looks around for something to clean her shield and sword. She looks around the room. "Is everyone alright? Does anyone need healing?"
"I may need to see the Father after this, but for now... grab the bodies we need to give them to the Father for proper burial. As he says this he grabs the remains of the fiend be the back of the neck and begins dragging it out of the attic. Noticeably his eyes seem to still be glowing stronger than normal.
Stopping by Sandu he says, "Nice shot, You killed something very evil this day." He than drags the fiend out of the attic and outside.
"I guess that makes sense."Ioben reluctantly reaches down and grabs hold of the clothes that the fiend at his feet is wearing. As it was only the size of one of the children, he had no trouble carrying it, but still, he tried to wrap as much of the exposed flesh as he could."Do you think the evil will leave, now that this thing has been killed? Or has he left more things behind? Like those runes downstairs? We should probably have Father Lucien do a thorough check after the bodies have been buried."Ioben makes his way back downstairs, glad they had removed the children earlier. This was hardly a sight they needed to see in their home.
“A proper cleansing is needed, but killing the fiend sent it back to where it came from. Luckily it takes them awhile to come back. As long as the person who killed them doesn’t summon them back to the material plane, they are banish from entering for 100 years. Shouldn’t be much of an issue for you and Sandu at least… Wait how long do half elves live,” asks Dormark.
