Leareth mused aloud. "And we're supposed to get them to contribute something toward the town's defense... Any idea how we can do that? I doubt we can just buy it, with what we have on us. And we're not authorized to offer any reward from the town. I guess I can ask nicely but I'll need your help."
"Leareth poses a great question," Gales adds looking toward the newcomer. "I'm not sure how things are where you come from Geralt, but in my land folks don't generally just offer up their secrets to every group of strangers that approach them." He looked at the others reading their expressions as he spoke. "Hopefully the warning of a nearby dragon will prove useful to them, but," he patted his pockets as he talked, "I for one don't have much other than a rumor to offer."

Geralt nods in agreement to the skeptisism. "Yes, it's true that not everyone does things for free. Especially something that could be a significant change in a battle like this, but all we can do is try. In the meantime, let's keep an eye out for each other and try to get through this."
You spend the next couple hours trudging through forests, hills and brush, as mountains start to take their shape through the trees you all eventually come to a stream. You follow the stream uphill to the base of the mountain, where waterfall erosion has carved out a natural concavity. The roaring waterfall creates a cloud of mist as it plunges into a shallow pool of water, within which rise two small islands covered with two-foot-tall red, green, and purple mushrooms. Several cave openings overlook the pool from rocky ledges twenty to thirty feet above. The mountain blocks any sunlight from reaching this place. As you peer around the area, you see 5 possible entrances, but only one, to the east, that looks like it might be an easier path to take.
Leareth looks around at all the entrances. "OK. I think we're meant to enter through that one in the east. Who else wants to take one of the others instead?"
You all cross over the stream and up the path to the cave entrance, The entrance is about 10ft tall and the hallways are roughly 5ft wide. The sound of the waterfall fills the space around you as you peer down the hallway. Those with darkvision see that the hallway extends 30ft east before meeting a split at the end of it (forms a T), with a path that leads north 10ft into the hallway.
Those without Darkvision see the path that leads north 10ft in while the rest of the hallway quickly dissipates into darkness.
Leareth shakes his head at Morgan's back and follows. "Because they don't know if we're friends or not. I don't see any signs that say 'Gnomes here, come on in' so it's possible they don't want to be found. May have booby-trapped the place. You know?" He sighed. "Please look out and move carefully. Since we're friends we won't sneak in, but we shouldn't barge in carelessly either." He looked around for any traps as they went.
"Point taken, Leareth. Looks dark in there," says Morgan; then he digs a candle out of his pack and lights it, sticking it on the top of his shield as they move into the darkness.

(My apologies, I didn't realize I hadn't responded.) As you light and place the candle, a small 10ft radius light illuminates the space. Would you like to head to the end of the hall or take the first left?
Moving forward slowly, Morgan feels the mysterious urge to follow the hall to the left. He continues that way, illuminating the way with the candle stuck atop his shield. "I am concerned that something may have happened to the gnomes--I would have expected to see lookouts or something before now," he says as he draws his mace.

As you lead your group down the left hall, you arrive at a 10ft x 25ft room. The room contains several dining tables and chairs sized for Small folk and a stout wooden cabinet lies against the east wall. Another hall continues north on the other end of the room. Besides this the room is empty and quiet.
Concerned, Morgan looks over the room for clues as to the location of the gnomes. He listens in particular to the cabinet, thinking perhaps if the gnomes had some kind of emergency, one of them could have hid in here.

Morgan: Nothing is coming from the cabinet, however, you do hear the sounds of chatter and clatter coming from the northern hallway. You can't discern what it is exactly from where you are though.
"I hear noises up ahead. Let's proceed cautiously," says Morgan. If it sounds like peaceful chatter & clatter (like a dinner party), Morgan will put away his mace and approach with less caution. If it sounds like a battle of some sort, he will approach with his weapon out and more cautiously. If he can't tell, he will be hopeful and approach cautiously with his weapon hanging at his belt. In any case, he moves up the northern hallway unless someone else wants to do something first.

Leareth moved forward toward the noises, stealthy as he could despite his earlier words. He felt like something was wrong here, and caution was warranted. His new eyes let him see just fine in the dark and he leveraged that as he left the light of the candle behind.

Gale quietly opens the cabinet to look inside before following the others up the northern hall. Taking his queue from Morgan he approaches as quietly as possible ready to draw his blades if needed. [Stealth: 16]
Gale, as you peek in the cabinet, you see what looks like a lot of small bowls, plates and silverware. Smaller than what you might of seen on earth. As you all make your way down the hall toward the noise. Morgan, as you press your ear against the door, you don't hear the sounds of fighting, but you do still hear the sounds of people talking and the clattering of things.

"We come as friends, why not use the front door?" asks Morgan rhetorically, nodding at Leareth and heading that way.
