Before proceeding down the shaft, Usul slings the back from his shoulder(it is like a messenger bag), and puts it down on the floor. Opening the flap, he digs inside and pulls out a few of the tablets, handing them off to Velyra and Silthras.
A quick study of them doesn't give you a whole lot of information. Silthras would recognize the script as draconic, but the prose is all strange. It reads out like a poem, or part of an epic perhaps. But it uses names and terms you don't readily recognize. As to whether or not it's similar to what you've seen in previous ruins or in the manor...It's been a long few weeks, and honestly it all just kind of looks the same to you. You're just not confident that you've really nailed down the characteristics to actually tell if these are different art and architecture styles.
For Velyra, the time period is unplaceable to you. After Silthras mentions that it's some kind of poem or tale in draconic, there is a slight click in the back of your mind...Enough that you're confident some time spent in a library could help you track down the origin of these tablets.
Silthras re-arms himself and pulls his backpack out of his own bag, then puts the broom into it. He considers the cramped space and adds his bow and quiver to the bag as well.
Finally he puts the bag in his backpack, and shoulders the heavier -- but more non-descript -- backpack, ready to follow Velyra down the ladder.
The descent down into the darkness is slow and somewhat suspect - the iron rungs of the ladder are spiked into the wall, and some shift as you put their weight on them. But ultimately none give way completely, and after climbing down for about a 100 feet you reach the bottom. There is only one direction to go from here, and the tunnel is as cramped as the shaft was. The walls are so narrow that passing is practically impossible, and the ceilings are only about 6 feet high. The tunnel is carved straight out of the rock, in a perfectly rectangle shape in fact. The walls, ceiling, and floor are all smooth stone.
It extends for about 200 feet before you can see no further, as it gently begins to curve.
Silthras tightens the straps on his pack, feeling the oppressive closeness of the damp walls. He's not sure Velyra should be in front, but she isn't the only healer in the party. He was surprised how willing she was to take the lead. He imagines that, for Velyra, the circumstances have become far more personal than for the rest of them: her religion, her profession and her very calling have all been brought into question. Who am I kidding? It's personal for all of us now.
He glances back to make sure Usul is alright, and the others are following close. he also tries to catch of any who might be following further back the way they came, but the bodies in the way make that almost impossible.
As they move forward, he continues to peer ahead, anxious about the possibility of traps and other hidden mechanisms. He also tries to catch any sign of the passage of children's feet in the dust and mud.
@DM: Is this a server or does it have some other obvious purpose?
Velyra and Silthras are about the only two who can realistically see in front in this narrow tunnel. Silthras catches no signs of mud or dust on the stone floor, nor does he see the faint glyph about a 150 feet in.
Velyra however, comes to a sudden stop, just barely catching the spell glyph etched into the floor beneath her raised foot.
"Stop!" Velyra says as she gently puts her foot down back outside the glyph. "Shit," she mutters, crouching down to get a closer look at it. "Hey Syl!" She calls over her shoulder, "there's a spell glyph up here. If I describe it to you, do you think you could help me disarm it?"
"Oh. Um." Sylnora stumbles slightly as everything grinds to a halt, and Velyra's voice sounds off from the front. "Uhh. Yeah? Probably. Just describe the sigils to me as best you can."
Silthras looks down at the glyph, then backs away, trying to usher everyone further back the way they came. "I've got no idea what to do with those" he says to Usul, "You got...anything?"
If it looks like Velyra might start working on the glyph while Silthras is nearby he says quietly, "Perhaps allow us to move a little back...just in case."
Velyra is certain of one thing as she talks back and forth with Syl to describe the glyphwork: she would have been absolutely lost without the wizard's guidance. Using her dagger, Velyra is able to scratch out the integral runes of the arcane trap without triggering it. Once finished with her handiwork, she confidently steps in the space. The circle flares brightly for a moment and then vanishes.
((Now is your plan here to go back up and rearrange?))
Velyra wipes the bead of sweat that had formed on her forehead, tucking away her dagger. "See? Nothin' to it." She pauses a moment, then calls back. "Thanks Syl!"
Silthras breathes a sigh of relief. "Well done. But maybe someone else should take lead and...whoever's in front...the other three should stay back. That might have been messy in such a cramped space." He glances down at Usul then back to Velyra and shrugs.
Kal shuffles backwards as he hears talk of backing away. Not wanting to give the rest of the party away, he has refrained from using the driftglobe, instead relying on cues from whoever is in front of him for when to stop and when to go.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Hitting the bottom and looking forward Usul says, "Let us lead. Dib can keep his nose out, and we're pretty quiet." He then steps forward slowly and silently, Dib sniffing the air, and Usul being careful to keep an eye out for any traps or signs that someone has passed.
Silthras is relieved that Velyra seems to be taking his earlier hints seriously, and offers whatever assistance he can.
