Merrick swallows uncomfortably. What has he gotten himself into? Are his companions okay with this murderer? He looks at the others, trying to see if they are okay with this.
Merrick, eat the chicken it's good. Kaemar smiles reassuringly at the halfling, who is clearly anxious in the company of the dwarf and shaken by the recent events.
I think it would probably be better for you to tell us what your expectations are, clearly you aren't the sort who believes in doing everything by the book, I have no problem with that, but I'd like to know what you are looking for in us. I suspect we aren't all on the same page right now.

"Sir, with respect what just occurred was wrong. Maybe they deserved to die, but justice was not served. I believe in retribution when deserved, and as you said, you're an operative, - therefore you are not a justice."
Louis takes his blood-soaked scarf off from around his neck and tosses it on the plate of chicken.
"If execution without review by a Justice is how the Grey Cloaks operate, then how can I be sure the orders given, especially if it is a sanctioned assassination, are right and in the benefit of our people. I'll have nothing to do with this."
“Hmmmph, well that was rude. At least try the chicken. “
Tuugum reaches across the table and picks up Louis’ scarf. “Ok, so the lecture begins early this time. I can tell by the look on Mr Meadowgrain’s face there that he’s none too sure he’s up for this.”
He puts the scarf in his pocket.
“Alright, so let’s begin with a question. What is the natural state of our world? Of our society? Left to our own devices, what is our equilibrium? War or peace? Take all the time you need.”
Merrick, hearing Louis speak up, is filled with courage. "Yeah! Wha-what HE said!". He takes his napkin and throws it down, trying to imitate the big man's movements. "That's right! We don't stand for that kind of thing!". Merrick then hurries out, following Louis on his short legs.
Outside, he trots by Louis' side, keeping pace. "I mean, can you believe that!? He just killed them? What the heck? I mean, I know they were bad, and yes they probably would have been hung. But that's just crazy! We could have been anyone. What if it was us? I can't believe it. I'm glad you see things this way too. Whew, I gotta say I was worried there for a minute. Too bad about the chicken though, it did smell pretty good. I wonder if they have bread. Hmm, do you think it would look bad if we went back for the chicken? I guess that might not look good. But then again, even the righteous have to eat right? What do you think? Chicken? I mean, I do have rations, but the chicken looked lovely. We sure did show them, didn't we? We put our foot down! Ha! Wait until Artin hears about this."
Louis already half way to the door ignores the sergeant's questions.
Outside, Louis looks down at Merrick, and smiles, "You can go back in and grab some bread if you want, but know they may ask you to stay. Either way, it's your choice. I'll be looking for a place to stay the night, worst case, I'll make camp nearby. In the morning, I'll return home and figure out my next move from there. Based on that sergeant it seems this organization is no better than the bandits we faced."
Outside the streets are nearly empty. Lights on in houses and a few loggers hurrying home after being last to drop their haul at the mill. Apparently there's not much of a nightlife out on the frontier.
The Boot and Blade was near the center of town. One block north are the residential blocks. To the south is the industrial section such as it is. East are a few Warehouses for storing lumber and ore. The commercial district is to the West. A single block that consists of a few shops stocked with necessities.
The road to the northeast that you came in on has an offshoot to the west around the forest to the north. You assume this is the 12 Mile leg of the road you didn't take. While walking into town, in the fading light you saw a number of roads headed into the thick forest south of Brogg. South, Southeast, and Southwest.
The woods to the south appear dark and dead in the night. The woods to the north equally dark, but there is a sense of life in them.
Kaemar nods to Tuugum and gets up, leaving the tavern.
"Louis, Merrick, hold on. It was a long way to come to leave straightaway, at least hear what he has to say." She walks closer so as not to be overheard "I get it, you didn't like what you saw in the woods, I'm not a huge fan either if I'm honest but those people were criminals and probably murderers. Besides, who is to say that he represents the entirety of the Grey Cloaks. Let's find out more, if he doesn't kill us all first we might find we can do lots of good working inside this organisation. That's why we are here isn't it?"
"I'm going back in, I hope you'll join me"

Vhon - Level 2 Warlock - What shall become of the Drunken Sailor?
"Hey diaper necks! Where's the best chicken in this one Wyrm town?"
Walking up the street from the south are three figures dressed for combat and covered in dirt, sweat and gore. One of them has clean rivers of skin below their eyes, clearly from tears. Though the rough look on their face would not give that away.
"Don't listen to her. Boot and Blade is over there if you're lost. Tuug's probably came here when you were late to the pass. Coppers to Kobolds he's got a roasted chicken and an ale in there for each of you."
As they get closer you can identify them as a half-elf ranger, a human barbarian and surprisingly a Goliath. More surprisingly an apparently unarmed Goliath.
"Hi", Merrick walks up with his characteristic friendliness. "There's some chicken and ale in there. It looked really good. I really wanted some. Well, that is until Tuug murdered a couple of bandits that we brought in. I'm Merrick, by the way, who are you? Do you guys murder bandits for Tuug too? We're not bandits. Not much into the murdering though. This is Louis. Diaper necks, that's a good name. That would make a good name for a band. Do any of you play music? I do the bagpipes. I can see it now, coming up next, the Diaper Necks! Playing for roast chicken and ale. Wow that sounds good. I could use some chicken right now. What are your names? Please don't murder us!"
The half-elf looks down and speaks to Merrick in Halfling:
"You're an excitable little shit. Might want to make slower movements or the Goliath might get jumpy and do something rash."
The Goliath smirks and shoves the half-elf in a playful manner then speaks in a low and surprisingly soothing voice:
"Murderer is a strong word, friend. If the Seargent did something distasteful I'm sure he had his reasons. More likely an object lesson. Now, if you will excuse me, I have a prior engagement with a fair number of the chickens in this establishment."
The half-elf follows along with the Goliath into the Boot and Blade:
"Yeah, out the way kiddos. I've got about a gallon of Ale to get in me before I can deal with the likes of your raw asses. Oceangrain you talk them off whatever ledge they're perched on. I'm going to get drunk as." As they're walking in to the Tavern "Seriously, just one time can we do the 'this big scary monster man is going to gobble you up? That could have been fun for weeks!"
The human remains with Kaemar, Merrick and Louis (Also Ragnor if we say he followed them out. We'll see how that plays out.)
"Diaper necks is just the slang for new recruits. Usually you guys don't take them off till someone tells you too. Or Tuugam gives his dirty rag speech. Anyway, I apologize for that, Zelzenya is generally a nice person but she gets edgy and more than a little mean when she's emotional or stressed. She's both right now." To Merrick directly "And Kavell isn't going to do anything to you. He's our own little eye of the storm."
"So Tuugam dispatched some bandits in front of you? First time seeing someone die? It gets easier but only just."
For Reference: Zelzenya - Female Half-elf Ranger. Kavell Brighthand Vandesteen - Male Goliath Monk. Aegis Oceangrain - Male Human Barbarian
So you are all Grey Cloaks, and judging by the way you act a lot of recruits come here. Are you going to tell us what happens next, or would you like to keep us hanging in suspense because I have some chicken back there and that goliath looked very hungry. And excuse us if we seem edgy, today has been a little intense.
Kaemar realises at this point that she is still wearing her white scarf and quickly removes it.
The half-elf looks down and speaks to Merrick in Halfling:
"You're an excitable little shit. Might want to make slower movements or the Goliath might get jumpy and do something rash."
Merrick smiles and replies cheerfully in Halfling. "**** your alley trash whore mother and your ancestors for one hundred generations, you half-breed gutter whelp. I'd call you a **** but you lack the warmth and depth."
He then makes an extremely rude gesture involving middle fingers and pelvic thrusts as she walks towards the tavern.

To the human, he replies. "Not, just the third time we've seen death this evening. We killed a few of their group earlier, but that was to defend an ambush. Well not really defend. More like attack. But attack in self defense. Hmm, that's a tricky one. Is that attack or defense? Maybe a monk would know? Anyways, Tuugam killed them when they were bound and tied. That's pure cowardice. And evil.
"I'll stick with Louis. If he's willing to hear what this dwarf has to say, I'll hear it, but I'm not a murderer and I don't work for thugs. You seem reasonable though, that's a good thing.
"Louis, how about we get the chicken? And the ale? And if it's more thuggish nonsense we'll head out. But take the chicken first."
The half-elf looks down and speaks to Merrick in Halfling:

"The rumors I've heard of this organization were clearly scrubbed clean when they reached our ears in the regular ranks back home."
"I'm not like Merrick here. Death doesn't bother me, neither do executions for that matter - I've delivered a few myself. Retribution and justice are tenets I eagerly serve. The candid killing of bounded prisoners upon first glance, though, is wrong. Execution without care to review evidence or testimony is unprincipled. Not to mention using four spells to do the deed which is just wasteful, when one sharp blade can do the same thing just as quickly."
"If our orders are to assassinate, it's easy enough for me to follow - but not when there are no rules and procedures to ensure that it comes vetted from our true command, rather than from a sergeant with a personal vendetta."
"I'll return to the tavern. You can have your chicken, Merrick. But this sergeant better have more to offer than philosophical arguments about war and doing what is necessary to see a mission through. My entire world is gray - I live neither in the light nor the dark - and the only thing separating us from the vermin that preys on others are the rules and principles we create to maintain order. Your sergeant has shown me nothing, yet, to separate himself from that which I look down on. I hope he can better explain himself than the paltry pile of bull crap he tried to use earlier."
Louis turns back to the tavern not waiting for the others.
Aegis looks down and rubs the bridge of his nose saying to himself "Izzy would have been better at this."
Looking up: "Listen you selfrightious little prick, I don't have time to listen to your little sermon about morality from atop the mole hill you call your perspective on the world. I'm going in there now to drink to the memory of a good friend who fought and died protecting your ignorant asses without so much as an expectation of thanks."
"So do whatever the **** you want, I don't give two shits. But before you get all high and mighty judging Tuugum through the keyhole that is your experience in the world, here's some things to consider. 1. He's been fighting this fight for three centuries so I'd give his "first glance" (he makes air quotes) read of a situation a lot more credit than yours. 2. I if he really is so "un-principled" (air quotes again) what are you doing walking around? Why didn't he light your ass up when you gave him lip?
"So, time to choose, come in, have a drink, and learn to play a bigger game. Or (Pointing north) there's the road out of town. But if the next time I see you isn't in the next 5 minutes, then Kav won't have to tear you arms off, I'll ******* do it myself."
He pushes past your group and heads into the Tavern calling back "Hey Merrick, if you're sticking around, I wouldn't mention Zelzen's mother again. I think you're only still breathing because you're a halfling and she doesn't have it in her to see another dead one right now. Just a tip." and with that he's into the Boot and Blade.
