“Or maybe there will be a reward out for it, in Marshswamp, if we ask the right questions! We could maybe make some legitimate coin, and return these goods!”, Ash chuckles.
Korrik begins counting things off on his fingers, "They killed a guy and left his maggoty body to stink the place up. They found a room full of skeletons, and rather than deal with them, they just locked them up, right next to where they sleep. They aren't even REAL smugglers, they are just bandits with a ship connection. They are selling weapons to lizardfolk for who knows what... I mean, I don't have anything against lizardfolk, but if they've an eye on Marshswamp, that doesn't sit well with me. And the whole ghost thing is just... tacky! I'm not interested in joining their crew, and I doubt they could be trusted enough to join ours. This place was just sloppily run."
"But if we think we want to move on the ship, I think hauling him and the other three back to town possibly tips our hand, if they've got other friends out there, they might get wise to it and then they're just waiting for us. If you're right Ash, and there is legitimate coin out there for their capture, we might be able to hand them over quiet like, but that's a risk. Letting them go almost surely means the ship gets tipped off before hand."
((Korrik would tell them what he would estimate a ship the size described would take to crew.))

"All solid points. The not dealing with the skeletons does indicate a clear lack of planning for the future. The lizardfolk lead might be worth something... We can run that down. What's his name in town didn't seem too concerned with them but we can check on that as well. Could definitely be money in alerting the city to future attack."
Ben sighs at the thought of keeping these four as prisoners.
"While I agree that letting them go increases the likelihood of the boat finding out, I have no desire to sit in this house for a couple of weeks guarding them. We check to see if there is a reward for them in town and we return some of the goods, but I think we can get more from not turning everything in."
Ben will do his magic eyes song and then walk through the caverns, sleeping area, boss room and skeletons' rooms looking for magic items.
As he does it he will inventory the goods here to see exactly they recovered.
((Bullet pointed loot is okay here 😉))
He would also have Ess start moving the bandits into the skeleton room.
Ash helps move the bandits (what help she can give), and helps to go through the bandits’ and the skeletons’ pockets and belongings ((does hat skeleton have any more of those viles of acid?)).
Part way through the clear up job, she says, “I say we’ve earned ourselves a sip from one of these barrels, before the day is through!... Maybe we return some, maybe we sell more, but maybe we keep one of these!”, and she pats one of the barrels.
"Once we've got them secure, we should go bring the horses. When it's light, Ben, you think you'd want to go ask some questions in town and if there's a bounty on then, bring the wagon back out to load them in? One of us could go with you, and the other two keep an eye on things here?"

"Agreed. Some questions will clear up our options. Who wants to come with me? I can sell some of the not stolen items as well and pick up some supplies. You wanted some studded armor Ash? I could use some too. Anything else? Ess you want to come? Ash would probably attract too much attention at this point, sorry."
Then he sighs and looks at the stripped bodies and in the direction of the grubs.
"You planning on dumping these folks in the ocean Kay? We should probably also deal with those maggots. No time like the present."
Ash nods, “Agreed!... I should, ‘lay low’... initially at least. At least until I can clean up a bit! I’m happy to stay here. We should try and get that plate armour out, to sell. It would go a long way!..”.
”Oh yes, studded leather would be great... the darker the better for me. And two new daggers and a whetstone. These will draw undue attention I think”. She says looking over one of her daggers.
“Some ball bearings, some caltrops...”. She starts to reel off her usual shopping list before she realises it’s not really about that right now... she looks down.
”Some clean clothes... Travellers clothes. The darker the better”. She smiles. “And... some food? And water?”. She smiles a pitiful smile, then it turns into a real one.
"I'm not needing for anything, other than breakfast... Maybe see what's around here. Bodies in the ocean may tend to wash up and lead to questions. We ought to take a peek where those skeletons were locked up before you take off for town."

Korrik's first staff swing is all it takes to KO Sanbalet. He falls limp to the ground and will awake in 4 hours.
Ash takes proper stock of the fallen as well as the cavern itself. There are a lot of weapons and armor strewn about as well as a few trinkets on the hat skeleton ->
Including Willard and the 2 KO'd women, this is the carnage:
3 Women = 3 leather armor, 3 longbows, 3 shortswords
Ess would say "To be honest I think I want to stay away from getting involved in some organized smuggling operation. Like Korrik says, these punks aren't even real smugglers. Although... any money we can make on this excursion to make it worth our while I'd be up for."Ess smiles at the though of the money that could potentially be made with selling these goods elsewhere.
"I'm good to return it as well. Might make us even more cash and heck maybe they'll even set us up with residences here seeing we might've just cracked a smuggling ring? Heck I'm game to live here in Marshswamp bros!"
Ess might be getting ahead of himself.
Ess would help move the bodies into the skeleton room as well as help with searching the place. He's also for sure share a drink with Ash!
Ess says to Ben"Yeah bro, I'll come with you for sure. No sense drawing any unwanted attention with Ash, although she might be a town hero now bro!"
Yes there is also that platemail on the maggoty guy in the wine cellar.
Here's the loot from the magic eyes Ben search!
First skeleton room = empty, dirty dingy room
Second secret skeleton room = The secret door opens toward you to reveal a clutter of broken glass and earthenware piled on the floor beyond. Three small copper pots lie amid the debris. A bench runs down the west wall of what seems to be a laboratory. On the bench are jars of powders and liquids and several pieces of chemical apparatus. There is a table against the south wall, forming an L-shape with the bench. A book is open on the table. Also on the table is a candlestick, with a tiny stump of unlit candle still in it, and a variety of other items that, even in the dim light, shine with the warmth of pure gold. One of these objects looks like a human skull.
-> -> ->
Book = 'Ye Secret of Ye Philosopher’s Stone', no author acknowledged. Though it is written in Common, the book is too profound and recondite a work to be fully understood.
Golden Objects = The objects on the table are made of pure gold. (A human skull, a set of five small discs, an apple and a rose.)
The table holds small stacks of gold coins totaling 47 gp.
There is also a spellbook on the table.
As for the caverns:
8 bolts of silk, and 13 casks of brandy
Please let me know what you take from all of the lists above in the spoilers and then confirm that the next plan is for Ben and Ess to head into town. It is around 5:00am right now (I think that feels right?) And let me know what you are taking back to town. The carriage is still in town.
And is Korrik dumping the dead bodies in the sea?
Oh - Ess would like that mariners armor! What do you guys say?
Thanks for your patience again! That was a long time out with a good bit of PC interaction in the meantime so let me know if I missed something. Even if it's a question asked to Ess that I didn't respond to.
Essentially this is the jackpot that Sanbalet and his gang were initially looking for. They didn't find it. Old man alchemist used to live in the house. They only found the first skeleton room, barred it shut, and then decided to use the house as base of operations for their smuggling gig. They faked out the locals by making the house seem haunted.
((Korrik was against dumping in the sea, he would know that they'd like wash back up again, either in the caverns below or somewhere along the coast. Putting them in soil is his preference. Or maybe down the well if it doesn't seem to be operational?))
Korrik ponders whether he'd ever heard anything about Philosopher's Stones, or anything that could change things into gold.
History or Arcana?: 16
((Anything pinging to Ben's magic sense? School of magic?))
((I think Ess is the only one of us that can wear the mariner's armor, so it's all his. Korrik will claim a shortbow and arrows if they are in decent shape, light crossbow and bolts if not.))
"Ess might be getting ahead of himself."
Huh... that doesn't sound like him at all. lol

Ben scoops the books, gold and gold objects from the alchemist room and brings them out to where they are piling their stuff. He passes out 11 gold to everyone and gives 3 extra to Kay for the petty gold fund.
He goes back and makes sure there is nothing sharp in the room they prisoners could possibly use to cut their bindings or use as weapons and puts it out on one of the bunks.
((Did any of the stuff on the alchemist and Sanbalet ping for magic? If so does he recognize any of it?

Once everything and everyone is together he comments,
"Okay. The golden skull is going to be a tough sell here, same with the books. The apple, roses and discs I can probably convert to gold. What else do we sell here? We can probably sell some of the leather armors and the weapons from the skeletons. Maybe the plate too. The silk and brandy are too hot, same for the rest of the weapons and armor probably."
To Ess's desire for the mariner's scale,
"Sure Ess, for your cut of the plate. Sound fair?"
"Oh, speaking of the plate. Ash, how fast are those grubs? They didn't look fast. I can probably deal with them without risking damage to the armor if they are slow. Just stand on the stairs and wear them down with my best insults, backing up as I go. If they are fast, well, we have Kay here."
“The maggots are really slow, but you don’t want to get A SINGLE ONE on you!!... They are really bad news. We can all probably take potshots at them but we need to keep our distance”, Ash replies.
Having maybe escaped from a few places, Ash would probably advocate clearing the skeleton rooms completely! (Moving all equipment, and gear and tables, etc, everything). They need to be empty cells! And stripping people down to their smalls, before baring the door so they can sort the rest of the stuff out in peace. And leave the survivors tied and bound and gagged. Especially the magic user!

If it’s not covered, Ash would suggest adding a large tarp’ or canvas to the shopping list, so we can transport stuff without it being obvious from a distance.
She’d also float the idea of making sure we have enough mounts for everyone eventually, but she doesn’t know the going rate, so that may be something for the future?
((@DM: can we assume that we find ample arrows and bolts? Also, in general, what’s your preference for ammunition? Do you prefer we track individual pieces of ammo or not worry about that?))
