"Glad to know I have a man with experience with me. Just as well we don't stir things up. We've been pretty open about having a basilisk, won't take a genius to link a dead one floating in the bay back to us."
"I can't see any harm in that. Let's turn them in, not that they care anymore. You want to do that? I have a bit of... Well probably best if I don't go right back in."
"Hello? Excuse me, my associates and I were traveling here, and long story short, we found some unfortunately folks that crossed a basilisk and came out statues. We transported the remains here, hoping someone would say 'Oh, yes, that was my basilisk and my friends', not that we want someone's friends to have died, but well, these people did, and so far we're not sure who to return them to, and its getting to be where it's feeling kind of odd to just be hauling around a bunch of rubble that used to be people... We'll still try to find their next of kin or the like, but could we leave them with you, in the meantime? If we can't find who to send the remains on to, I'd be able to help with any burial fees the temple might incur."
((I think I alluded to it when Korrik was keeping up the patter with the guards, but anytime that he's saying a paragraph of text to an NPC, you can picture him saying it at 1.25x normal talking speed.))
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Ben is out on the carriage, humming to himself while enjoying an itch free nether zone.
He'll also fill Ess in on the map and the landmarks commenting,
"Apparently this haunted place is an old abandoned building on a cliff. Sounds suspiciously like where we were promised riches and wonders. Might be more abandoned places along cliffs though. Lot of cliff to build on around here."
He is not optimistic though and ponders on if what Winston told him fits what he knows about ghosts.

Ben, you're pretty sure that Winston believes what he is telling you about the haunted house.
"Yep, ready to go guys! Cool, you'll have to show me the map once we get settled for a place to eat! Hey dudes, ya think that house on the scroll we found in that buried treasure box is on that map somewheres?"Ess says enthusiastically to you both. "Naw, I don't need anything for now guys in the store, except a warm meal and maybe some beer!"
(I had typed that after I had read that Ben is giving Ess the lowdown on the map while they wait outside. Sorry!)
Korrik, one of the temple patrons greets you, and after you tell your story, a few others come over as they are quite interested. I think because of the way you approached the temple patron and what you said and how honest you were, especially the part about finding their next of kin and helping with potential burial fees, the temple will be happy to take the remains and watch over them until an appropriate amount of time has passed and/or no kin is found. This seems like a temple-ey thing that they do.
At that point, the temple will take care of the burial of these remains and also treat them accordingly with any final magics or rituals. No payment required.
"I wish there were more folk like you in this world, dear friend. Please, do not worry about any such fees. The fact that you brought these poor souls back to a proper resting place is payment enough."
Ok, so a few temple workers will come outside and gently grab the remains. They will definitely react to the smell of the dead basilisk. These workers are not the one that treated Ben, so there are no awkward moments here.
Busren, you have some knowledge about ghosts in general. Enough knowledge that you likely believe in them. No background knowledge though on this particular place. Ess would say "Hmmmm... dude, imagine if it was the same place?! It looks like by the scale there that it's only what... four or five miles bro! We can walk that! Looks like there's even a road. LET'S GO TOMORROW, HOMIE!!"
Ok, by this time after the general store and that temple body part drop off, the markets are now closed and all booths and tables are put away. Merchants are going home.
Are you going to the Snapping Line Inn right now? It is getting close to 7 in the evening. Are you dumping the dead basilisk before, or in the morning? There will most definitely be issues if you try and store that carriage at the inn with that smell. If you dump it now, we will have to figure out where... Or will you do something else in this moment? There may also be potential issues, or at least hiccups, with Busren's race in a tavern. But that's meta, and we'll see.
As always, let me know if I missed anything and/or if you want more detail/RP in the temple! I know I kind of glossed over that temple/pieces of stone people thing due to PbP, but I think there'd be quite a conversation about the pieces of people as the temple wouldn't see this type of thing on a regular basis. If ever. They'd also likely ask you where you're from, what brought you to town, etc. etc. all stuff we could do in a live game... but would take awhile via PbP so that is why I glossed it.
"I think there's probably more inside this thing, we kind of tried to puzzle piece things, and there wasn't enough for two... but I don't know what state the parts it ate are going to be in... I can open it up and we can fish them out for you, so you've got the... whole set, as it were. We were going to see if the creature was worth anything to anyone, but it's looking like we've a dead monster full of statue parts on our hands."
If they want him to, he'll hold his breath and slit the belly open. He'll ask Ben if he can clean him up after.

Ben will help get the likely bloated basilisk remains out of the carriage and probably a ways away from the temple before taking position upwind of Korrik's work. Way upwind, incase there is a popping. He'll gladly clean Korrik up and will suggest to temple people,
"Any chance we can borrow a shovel? Just as well put whatever is left in a hole when that is done. You think up here a few hundred feet would be okay? A nice deep hole."
If they agree he'll have Ess get started digging a hole a couple hundred feet north of town and a short distance off the road. There will be constant prestidigitationing as they haul it's corpse to the hole.
"Awww man REALLY? We are going to cut the sucker open? Aight, I guess you're right. I mean look what we found in the crocs!"
The temple would lend you a shovel, and yes there would be ample spots up north of #26 (temple) to bury this sucker. "Please, just not near the graveyard."
Korrik guts it. You find decomposing human remains which smell even worse and Ben's spell just might not even be enough to completely drown it out! The temple will NOT want those remains. They will just handle the ones that are still stone.
-> With its strong jaws, the creature consumes the stone, which returns to organic form in its gullet.
"Oh so you're gonna get ME to dig the bloody hole? Thanks, guys." He jokes. (he secretly likes it and is just so happy to be here he doesn't mind.)
Let's assume it takes an hour. I won't bother rolling STR for Ess. The soil is loose. :)
It's about 8:30pm. You guys are starving. The village is bumping.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Well now we know the cure for being turned to stone by one of these things. They need to eat you."
Any gold/valuables in with that nasty? If we got to scoop it up and haul it off Ben will take a look, nose covered shifting it around with a stick and prestidigating the every loving goodness out of it.
