"Hmm... something is definitely strange... wrong here. I know I saw that Halfling." Varn closes the door and moves on. "Let's look through the last rooms, make sure he's not hiding there."He orders as he moves towards the next door.
The hall had two doors on the left and two on the right. The second door on the right was the storage closet. So Varn moves to the first door to the right. It seems to lead to a smaller bedroom. To the left of the door was a bunk bed. On the right was a desk around which were stacks of haphazardly kept children's books. Leaning against the right wall was a guitar and a ball. This probably belonged to two halfling siblings. The room is dark and devoid of living things.
"Let's just get out of here."Komos says. "Whatever that was wouldn't give you a prize to take home anyway."He then looks to his friend, ready to head for the door.
"You're probably right. Let's head out." Varn turns around, towards the stairs that would lead them out of the house. "And, perhaps it is time we leave this town too. We just need to search for our dogs and take the cart through the gate... if nothing happens on the way."
(I'm not entirely sure what happened to the dogs. To the best of my memory, they ran away from the first monster we encountered, but I might be wrong here.)
(To be completely honest, I forgot about the dog. I remember saying that they came back after running away in the first monster attack but after that, I forgot about them. So possibly they've just been hanging around all this time. )
Heading outside, it is dark and it there is a sense of danger in the air though the streets are eerily quiet. Even in night, the fog is as thick as ever. Outside the house is the cart, just where they left it. Strange... they can't seem to remember exactly how they got the cart over to where it is. There are no horses and no beasts of burden to pull the large cart.
"Do you think the two dogs together could pull the cart?" Varn asks Komos, then tries to think. "I might be able to make them grow in size, but I doubt it will hold for long, and I wouldn't be able to do it repeatedly all day. Hmm, I wish we could use one of those muscled things that tried to kill us. I bet they could pull the entire cart by themselves." Still, with no better alternatives, Varn tries to see if the dogs are large enough to pull a large vehicle like this one, and if they can, he tries to tie them to the yoke.
While trying to see if the two dogs together can pull the cart, Varn discovers that, while the dogs can pull the cart by itself and a small amount of things on top of that, the loads put on the cart by Gundar is too much. They would have to either abandon the cart or abandon the payload.
“It seems we cannot finish the task for which we were hired.” Komos says, clearly disappointed. “If there are no beasts of burden in this town what are we to do? Take what little we can?”
"I guess. If they ask why we come nearly empty-handed, we'll explain this situation. I doubt anyone will believe us, but... what else can we do?"Varn shakes his head. Anyway, it was never of much importance for him to complete this task. One of noble blood shouldn't be doing this kind of labour. "Let's gather what we can and go."
Varn picks up one of the potions and the wand, as well as the 10 coins. He has no use for the armour and offers the dagger to Komos if he wants it. "I'm using my magic more than any weapons at this point." He reasons.
"I have no use for the armor either, though the pups should be able to carry it."Komos says, pocketing a potion and the dagger, adding,"Even if we cannot deliver the supplies, they may have need of these. And we can tell them what has happened to the town."
The gates to Neverwinter stand tall, imperial and imposing. The massive 15ft tall mechanical gates rests between two guard towers. The heavy gates are closed and can't be opened normally. To open them, it requires someone to enter the guard station that is located inside the walls of the city and operate the levers to open the gates. There are two entrances to the guard station: a metal door on the right side of the gate, next to the right tower; another metal door next to the left tower on the left side of the gate. The left tower door is locked with a heavy padlock on the outside. A similar lock was placed on the right gate but strangely, it looks like something melted the thick chain to open the door and get inside. Though no longer locked, the door was still closed and it was not possible to know what was inside the right side of the guard station without getting a peek inside.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Well, let's at least try to open this one." Komos says, heading to the lock. ((18)) After messing with the lock he heads over to the other, melted lock, and looks to see if he could do anything with his smiths tools and headed metal ((fire bolt)) to get through the chain.
considering there is no time here, would it be unreasonable to say he could pick it just slowly even if he 'failed' the roll? same for the chain. given enough time he'd like to try to get through it.
((Some clarification. It's not that there is no time here. It's just that the world isn't reacting like it should to time passing. Things like yourself and monsters can still move around so really you don't have unlimited time to do a thing.))
That being said, for Lock picking, you can try again (another roll) but if you fail, you lose more Lockpick Health.
Also the chain has already been melted through. The right door is closed but can easily be opened with a slight push, no tools or tricks required.
So do you enter through the right door or do you try to pick the lock on the left door? Or do you do something else?

Bump. What do you two do now? Komos and Varn?

Rummaging through the carriage the pair finds some items that might be of use to them.
DM: Let me know which ones you take and which ones you leave behind. Don't forget about encumbrance.

Komos and Varn take whatever they think would be useful. They let the mastiffs carry the plate armor. =
Now what are you going to do?
Bump.
First post of 2022! Where are you guys going?
"Alright, let's head to the gates. Time to leave this place." And thus, Varn leads the way to the Neverwinter gates.

Lockpick health (due to failed roll): 19/25
