Upon entering the Inn, even Phillip is relieved to get out of the sun. He lets out a happy little sigh and pads over to an empty table, somewhere near the middle of the room, that’s big enough for the whole party.
He throws his 1gp in, to pay for his room and board for the night. Then he sets his pack and equipment down and hops up onto one of the seats to take the weight off his feet for a bit.
After Syn leaves, he’ll say quietly to those nearby, “Syn is a wonderful woman.... Uh huh. She’s been very kind to me... ...Mmm. I have to help her!... yup yup yup, uh huh....”.
Phillip agrees with Evo about meeting up with Syn and her Prince-friend in the morning. And he chuckles and nods when Gotur quips that they might not see beds again for a while.
He watches as Evo heads over towards a couple of the professional jungle guides, and will try and keep an ear tuned-in, to how that conversation goes.
For now though, he tries to catch the eye of one of the serving-staff, to get some cool drinks going for everyone.
Phillip, one of the serving staff would eventually come over to the table (although not because you caught their eye, just because it's their job) and get refreshments and even a meal if everyone desired. This would all be included in the price of the stay, which makes the 1gp a bit more reasonable. The drinks would be non-alcoholic and refreshing. They'd have some different exotic alcoholic beverages and liqueurs as well, but they'd be extra.
Evo, which of the two guides would you walk over to? The woman, or the two tabaxis?
Whichever one you walk over to, the other one will leave for no reason other than I just want Evo and the party to engage one guide at this time :D
((What does he know about tabaxi? But he would go with the human (?) woman just because it is more comfortable from past experience. Does she look like a local?))
"Excuse meh? Do ye have a moment to chat? Ye look like a woman who might know her way around Chult?"
Alton flops down at the table, yet again wiping sweat from his brow. He would happily pay the 1 gp fee for a room and meal, and also accept the drink from Philip. “Thank you, Phil,” he pants. Afterwards, Alton would then turn his attention to Evo to watch the interaction.
At some point during the time the group talked, Alton would express interest in:
Gladatorial Arena (Just to see the sights. Experience Chult culture.... and maybe fight himself???)
Talking with some member of the Emerald Enclave. They might be able to help with both information about the curse and possibly give some leads.
Just in general exploring both the Red Bazaar and Grand Souk
Head to Goldenthrone and see about meeting with any of the merchant princes. Gotur wants to see about plants, but I thought it would be valuable to see about talking to Wakanga O’tamu (magic and lore) to see what they might know about the whole curse thing. On top of that, Alton might be a little suspicious of Jessamine (poison and assasination). They say the curse is caused by some necromantic artifact, but maybe there is some sort of sinister plot involving poisoning all of Chult... through the water?!?
Anyway, I think that’s everything. Let me know what y’all think!
((The soulmonger is eating people's souls when they die and if you've ever been resurrected it will slowly kill you. Otherwise you're fine until the very end. That is what has been explained, so no poison water. Unless Alton thinks Syn is suspect/lying about that? If so carry on!))
Gotur (and everyone else), the two options you'd have for the meal would be thinly-sliced very fresh fish, topped with citrus sauce and pepper with a side of rice, and the other would be a plesiosaur steak served with a native legume. The alcohols would include a few different types of local ale made with various native fermented plants, and some harder liqueurs made with the sugars from some of the local sugar based plants. They are constantly bringing the table water as well. The water is AMAZING here. So clear and tasty and satisfying.
Evo, you can roll a nature check to determine how much you know physically about them, and a history check to see if you know lore about them in general (tabaxis). You can make either or both checks.
As for the woman, yes she does look like a local for sure. She is clothed in light blue robes and carries a walking stick carved in the likeness of some small flying dragon. She stands 5 and a half feet maybe, and looks to weigh about 100 pounds. She sees you approach her, listens to your greeting and chuckles. She responds after a few chuckles "Friend, I've spent my entire life trying to rid the jungle of the evil that infests it. Aye, indeed I do know my way around Chult. I'm Eku, and it's a pleasure. You and your friends new around here? The lot of ye stick out like a sore thumb. What may yer business be here, friend? Ye interested in a guide, Mr.....?"
Alton, I have added all of those items to the Follow up tab which I will answer after I post this post. I will answer those questions there and/or add them there to keep track of them. All of the open items on that tab will be in red (for everyone)
((Rod has a good point. This particular curse seems to be currently only affecting folks who have been resurrected. It is making them rot away and then their soul gets taken somewhere. Also, if you die in Chult, you cannot be resurrected because this artifact known as the Soulmonger is doing something with the souls. So - if it was the water, it would likely be poisoning everybody vs. just currently affecting the resurrected folk. Although a long shot could be that the water is causing the ENTIRE thing. Which can be asked about.))
Phillip will take a simple non-alcoholic drink for now, a mix of tropical fruit juices maybe? Ice, if they have it. “Mmmmm.....”, he takes a nice long sip, and then follows it up with a few deep breaths. He looks around, pleased with the group he’s found himself with.
When Gotur asks the staff about alcoholic drinks, he’ll listen with interest, but he’ll stick with his juice for now.
When Alton thanks him, he looks up surprised and very touched and happy! “You’re very welcome! Yep!!...Uh huh, uh huh!....”, and he holds his cup up to ‘cheers’ enthusiastically with him.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.

Evo bows a bit,
"Eku, it's nice to meet ye! We are new and aye think we are looking for a guide or more. We are also trying to get rid of evil here! Ye heard of the soulmonger? We are here to get rid of it. Ye heard anything about it? Oh, and meh name's Evo Sandfist, cleric of Selûne."
He scratches beard and continues,
"Uh, how does one get a guide? Ye seem like a good one?"
"I'm kind of interested in trying both, any one interested in ordering and and I'll order the other, and we can share? I'll have an ale please, whichever seems to be the most popular. Anyone else? I'll get the first round."
"EVO! You want an ale?", Gotur calls across the bar.
Gotur is in the middle of telling the server "Just go ahead and bring hi-- Alright! I figured! --yeah, he'll take an ale, as cold and refreshing as you've got, thanks!"
Phillip, yes exactly, the water is amazing and the fruit juices are to die for. All included in the 1gp.
Evo, you'd know that tabaxi make formidable opponents. They are fast, and have a few ways of attacking both with crafted weapons and natural weapons. As far as their race in general, you'd know they are curious catfolk who love to explore the world wonders. They likely have a cat based deity.
Eku responds "Evo, well met. Hmmm... Selune you say? You must be far from home indeed, although it's always nice to have the moon on your side in the jungles let me tell you. Soulmonger? Well my friend Evo, who hasn't! The fackin' thing is what most people 'round here talk about these days. Seems to be causing some troubles to some folk now, yes? You want to get rid of it? You and what army, my friend!" she chuckles again. "Ah, I mean no offense. It's just, I've seen a shit ton of large groups head into the mother jungle with the same goal in mind, and I haven't seen them around town again, so I can only imagine what might be their fates. Although, they weren't the sharpest knives in the drawer if you get me, friend."
"Look. If yer lookin' for a guide, I'm your lady. Been doing this work since I was little. I know the jungle. Hell, I know the place where your Soulmonger likely is hiding. Might take more than your Selune to get us there, but hell, I'm looking for work, and you all seem to be looking to travel, so this could work."
During this conversation, she would touch on these subjects:
- She is also looking for help to rid the jungle of evil just as much as you are seemingly after the Soulmonger. She appeals to those who find fulfillment in doing actual good in the world, and will not work with evil-aligned characters.
- She knows of many ruins and ancient temples that must be reclaimed, so that the sprits of nature can return to their scared places and live in peace.
- Eku has a personal vendetta with a specific green hag in the jungle and would potentially want the party's help in dealing with her if she joins and if they travel near her location.
- Lastly, and most importantly, she knows the location of Omu, which is said to be the lost city deep in the jungle which has the huge tomb in which the Soulmonger is apparently located.
"My guide rates are standard. 5 gold a day, with a 30 day payment up front. A small portion goes to pay off the merchant prince Jobal. The rest I give to charity."
"Eku, aye'm with ye on everything. Aye'll talk with meh army and get back with ye. Can ye come back here tomorrow? And maybe if ye can recommend other guides ye'd be okay to work with? To increase the size of our army."
He gives her a friendly smile. If she agrees he will share everything she did and add,
"Aye liked'r. Aye don't got the coin to pay her though, so maybe ye can help out if ye think that's good? Probably can talk her down if we help her out too. Maybe get another guide, just in case too? Maybe three?"
"Fiver per day, and thirty up front? That's what... one-fifty? I mean... I can swing that, but that's a heck of a lot of money. I'm rather new to having more than a couple gold in my pouch at the same time. We have any idea if that's a fair price? Good, honest day's work back home could get you two gold, though I guess a guide's working day and night, so I'd see them charging more... all the coins on the table, I could hire three at her rate, but that would leave limited funds for other expenses. Syn promised riches from exploring, do guides demand a cut of that, or is it just the flat rate up front?"

Phillip will gladly share some of each meal with Gotur. In fact he thinks that’s a really novel idea! He’ll even suggest just getting a bunch of both and everyone just digging in.
When Evo gets back and explains what the guide said, Phillip’s whole face lights up (which is really saying something for someone who already has bright eyes and a massive smile). “E’vo! E’vo! That’s incredible! Uh huh!.... That sounds, like JUST what we need! Yup yup yup!...haha!!.. ... ...Come, we have food and drink. Dig in! ..Uh huh, uh huh....”.
Then he thinks and says, “I wonder whether Syn or her prince-fffff-P’riend might be able to assist with a little gold?! Hmmmm?.... Or one of the other princes might have an interest in bankrolling us??! Uh huh?...”.
Then he mutters, thinking... “Hmmm... more guides might help. Maybe... uh huh. Yup yup yup!”.
He seems very happy with Evo, and digs in to the food (but sticks to soft drinks for now).
"Aye think we could probably talk her down if we offer to help her with her hag problem, which aye got nothing against. If we can get her for cheap, and maybe nothing upfront and maybe a couple others just incase it might be worth it? I also hope Syn and her prince friend can finance us a bit too. Don't want to go unprepared just for lack of coin."
