"Not sure if I can fight while carrying a crate though." Nolla says as she had just picked up a crate. "I think we either take the crates and run, no fighting, or we stand and fight, then take the crates. Otherwise, if we fight as we leave, we won't be able to take the crates." (Let me know if that is wrong, if we can fight while carrying crates, then disregard above.)
(OOC - you're correct, you couldn't fight with the crates in your hand. You can put them down or pick them up with your free action, but not both.)
As you try to decide on the course of action, the tiny creatures continue to scurry towards you in the room of crates, now about 30ft from the room.
Nolla, with her crate in-hand, turns and starts legging it for the exit. She uses her dash as a normal action and her bonus action as an additional dash action. Once at the exit she will move out and set down the crate, pulling out her bow to start firing as the others reach her.
Thavriol bows to the inevitable and turns, grabs up a couple of crates, and then dashes toward the exit. Once there, he turns, pulls out rapier and shield, and readies himself to attack the first hatchling to come in range.
ooc: held action, attack first hatchling as it comes in range.
Alix also grabs a crate and runs to keep up with the others. Once back with the group at the exit, he drops the crate, turns and steps forward enough to be 10 feet away from everyone else and prepares to cast Arms of Hadar once the hatchlings come into range.
As you all run for the exit carrying the crates, you hear the squeaks and screeches of the tiny creatures behind you trying to keep up. As you clear the tunnel and stand at the entrance waiting for them to follow, the creatures never arrive, having slowed as you got closer to the entrance. As you look back into the darkness however, you see a creature standing some way down the tunnel looking directly at the four of you. Those with dark vision can see that this creature is larger than the others, about the same height as you. It hissing call echoes down the tunnel out to you, "Thieves! You dare to steal from us? It matters not, little slaves. We will wash over your pathetic lands soon enough and your town will offer up some excellent slaves and goods for trade. Run along home now, little slaves. Next time be sure to bring an army with you." The creature lets out a hacking and hissing bout of laughter as it turns and disappears into the darkness of the tunnels.
At that point, Hurdig the farmer runs up, crossbow at the ready. "What in hells were that I heard? Are ya's alright?" Seeing the crates, he runs over to have a quick look, "An' yer've got some o' me supplies too! Ah, yer a good bunch. Did ya find me workers at all?"
"Indeed, I believe that the best thing for this is to return with more people and collapse these tunnels, your workers are beyond saving, at least as far as I can tell" Seinna speaks but her eyes do not leave the tunnel nor the creature until it leaves

"I wouldn't go that far." Nolla says with a shake of her head. "Likely slaves, maybe something else, but unable to be saved, I think that is going a bit far." She eyes the tunnels. "Something has to be done about these things and I doubt simply blocking their tunnels, or destroying them, would even set these things back. We need to rest up, and, if possible, get some more aid, then go back in."
"I agree with Nola. My own experience with the evil things tells me they want slaves, not food. But if we leave and return rested that'll be a week, leaving the workers in the clutches of the things, not to mention leaving the farm at risk for several days. Can't we spend the night here, have Hurdig send another message asking for more aid, then have another go in the morning?" Thavriol is under no illusions regarding the farmer's ability to hold off the Neogi.
Hurdig chuckles, "Thanks fer yer concern, but no be worryin' 'bout me. Managed ta find me a good hiding spot. Is why you found me here an' no one else. But I'd appreciate yer comin' back with more o' ya if ya think ya can take 'em." He scratches his head a moment, "If ya sayin' me workers are taken as slaves, then I'd 'spect they be alive. I mean, why kill slaves, right? Well, that's me hopes anyways."
Alix shrugs. “The creatures attacking your farm are beings from beyond called the Neogi. Their motivations are beyond our understanding. Like livestock they can be used as both labor and food, as well as other purposes I suppose. But...perhaps coming back with a larger contingent might be a better idea. Perhaps someone that can assist in countering mind control.”
"Mind control?!" Hurdig says with some concern, "Well ain't that somethin'? Must be why they walk away with me workers." He scratches his head as he ponders this. "Well, I don't know much 'bout that, but I know farm pests. If they be burrowin' down there, then likely ta be a right maze underground. Best have a way o' findin' yer way back from the depths case ya get lost." He pats one of the crates with work-hardened hand, "Well, at least ya got me some supplies back. Much appreciated. Can ya help me bring these back ta me house?"
Thavriol picks up the two crates and follows Nolla. "Well, if you believe you'll be OK while we're away, then returning to the city, resting and trying to get more help is the way to go."
Hurdig directs you as to where he needs the crates, then goes about scribbling a note for the town watch. "Yer a good bunch fer bringin' some o' me supplies back with ya. Least now I can get a little work done, long as those things stay away. But if ya can come back ta hopefully get me workers, it'd be much appreciated. Many hands make light work an' all, an' well..." he sweeps his arm to indicate the farm. "Don't have much in way o' payin' ya. But here," he rifles around in a lockbox full of trinkets and odds and ends. He eventually brings out 25gp and two small items. He holds up an amulet with interlocking gears and cogs, "Me da' called this a Clockwork Amulet. No idea how it works, an' have never seen use fer it. An' this," Hurdig holds up a horn like that you would see a town watchmen carrying. "This here is a Horn o' Silent Alarm. Not sure how it works, but never been able ta get it ta make a sound. Blew it 'til me face turned blue. Maybe ya'll have bett'r luck with it." He hands you the note for the town watch, the amulet, the horn and the 25 gold. "Sorry it ain't much. But if ya can come back an' help some more, I'd be in yer debt."
