I'm working on "Trickster" style character. The race will be gnome, but i'm struggling with class or multi-class. The "Trickster" will use a series of gadgets such as smoke bombs, bombs, ball bearings. It will be a dual wielding of claws or sickles or something of that nature. It will be a dexterity build which makes me think of a Rouge-ish style character but i'm struggling with Classes and Archetypes. Do you think this style of character will fall within the range of standard rules? or will this require Homebrew content?
You could go Arcane Trickster and pick up some spells to add to the arsenal of tricks. Stuff like Disguise Self, Grease, Snare. You get a lot of flexibility. :)
Thief Rogue is a great choice if you want the emphasis to be on using items. Fast Hands lets you take the [Tooltip Not Found] action as a bonus action, and Second-Story Work lets you climb better and get to hard-to-reach places.
Trickery Domain Cleric, Arcane Trickster Rogue, perhaps a Bard or Sorcerer. I mean other kinds of Rogues would work as well. Maybe a Ranger or Fighter only if you wanted it to be less magic inclined

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
Yeah, I would go for an Arcane Trickster Rogue. With an OK from your DM you could say all your spells are gadgets. So smoke bombs would be fog cloud, grease would be ball bearings, fireball would be you firing a shoulder rocket, etc. No reason you can't have fun with that.
As a DM I would just make sure you understood that regardless of how your spells looked they would still be treated as spells and thus could be counterspelled or dispelled. The only thing different would be how the spells looked.

Definitely sounds like a rogue to me.

"We got this, no problem! I'll take the twenty on the left - you guys handle the one on the right!"🔊
Maybe multi-class with a cleric of that domain too!
