So I am considering a quest that revolves around exploring down into a Mind Flayer colony and I've been doing some pretty intense reading on the Elder Brain and Mind Flayers and the like and I came across this tidbit on the Elder Brain stat block. It can have a maximum of 10 peeps linked at a time. Now given how mind flayers are linked to the Elder Brain, does this mean that no more than 10 mind flayers in a colony, because that seems contriversal to how the reading seems to imply there's a good amount of mind flayers serving an elder brain, but there's nothing in the reading to indicate that mind flayers count as part of that link outside of they are all linked in a hive mind like situation. If there's 10 mind flayers, does that mean that a PC couldn't be linked because it would break the link with a mind flayer? If this is the case, could my PC attempt to have one person forge a link then split from the group so as to kill a mind flayer (That they hope has then become unlinked, despite if that's the truth) without notifying the rest?

You only lose if you die. Any time else, there's opportunity for a come back.
There are definitely more than 10 mind flayers in a colony. The hive mind works by the colony's Elder Brain communicating with different mind flayers at different times. The mind flayers can also communicate with each other and their thralls. The Elder Brain stat block says it can have conversations with up to 10 creatures at once. To communicate with other illithids in the colony, the brain simply breaks its link with one mind flayer and establishes a new link with another.
Devious serpent folk devoid of compassion, yuan-ti manipulate other creatures by arousing their doubts, evoking their fears, and elevating and crushing their hopes. From remote temples in jungles, swamps, and deserts, the yuan-ti plot to supplant and dominate all other races and to make themselves gods.
Hive Mind: subconscious, back of the mind connection to every illithid.
Link: active link for direct communication and thought sharing.
Or think of it this way:
You're in a café with friends. You can see and hear all patrons but you don't make out too much detail because you're not focusing on them. They're just background noise. The friends at your table, however, you hear clearly and read more details into because you are focusing on them and actively conversing with them.
