This is probably going to sound like a total n00b question, but how do you add spells to spellbooks? Is it automatic when you level up? Is it something you have to do during downtime? Are you only allowed to copy spells, or can you study on your own to learn new ones? I can't seem to find anything in the PH except for the Your Spellbook sidebar on p. 114.

Learning Spells of 1st Level and Higher Each time you gain a wizard level, you can add two wizard spells of your choice to your spellbook for free. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots, as shown on the Wizard table. On your adventures, you might find other spells that you can add to your spellbook.
Yer wrong. In the multiclassing bit, there's also stuff on the wizard. It would seem that 1st-5th level spells mystically appear at the level, but 6th up need to be found.
I just looked, and couldn't see anything with a cursory glance. Do you have a page number for reference?

Dependent on campaign, this may be inconvenient.
Uhhhh, no? That is not the case at all.
Each Wizard level you gain you add 2 spells into your book. Any additional spells you need to find a source for them and copy (using the rules in the spellbook side bar in the Wizard class section). Nothing about level 6th and higher being different.
the rules state how long and cost for materials. the automatic spells at leveling are the result of continuous study, and it is assumed the PC has been scribbling notes during down times.

They are added automatically, but it's cool if there is some time in-game when you can flavor how it happens.
Like, you have some copied pages of notes from a local wizard more powerful than yourself. While on the road, you test your spells wherever you can get away with it, with possible comedic consequences.

Previous editions had variant rules for PCs needing to train in order to level up - for Wizards that would mean that you add the spells then, and depending who you trained with that might give you different options of spells.
We used to have a game mechanic back in AD&D 1e days of a spell called "Write". It would allow the Magic-User (what it was called then) scribe a spell into his book or on a scroll for however long based on his level.
