I don't have much experience with DnD, but I've been looking into playing a wizard and was wondering if you can use the same spell multiple times by expending different spell slots? Do you prepare your spells with certain slots in mind from the start or is it more of a general list thing? So for example, could I have a magic missile prepared with one of my 1st level spell slots and 2nd level spell slots, then use both of them individually, or do I just prepare a list and use them however I will so long as a slot is available that's high enough? I'm not sure if this is more of a per DM type of decision or if there's a "by the book" way to do it. I may have just missed the part that mentions how to handle this in the handbook.
Upon re-reading the preparing and casting spells section for the wizard. I get it now, you just prepare a list up to X # of spells and can expend the slots for them as you will.
Correct, it is not like previous editions where if you wanted to cast a spell multiple times, you need to prepare it multiple times. Here you prepare it once and can cast it as many times as you have slots.
5e made it much easier - you prepare the spell (and have a certain number of prep slots equal to level+mod) and then you can cast those spells using any spell slot that is available (of course ensuring you use the minimum or higher for a spell).
