I was curious if a Kenku PC could duplicate a magical item through the use of their racial traits as it is stated "They can copy books, make replicas of objects"? This is assuming the PC has the ability to craft enchantments and the skills for the specific item. What would be the limitations, time/material/monetary costs, or even requirements?
Personally they probably could make splendid counterfeits, but not the real deal. A "replica" is not necessarily functional (think of replicas of civil war rifles and such). That said, if the character has the abilities to make magical items (as per the downtime actions in Xanathar's guide) then he could make something that looks and feels and acts identical. But with the trait alone I don't think that say a kenku rogue without magical abilities could make a copy of the Deck of Many Things just like that.
Makes sense, however, the thought came to me after reading the "hopeless plagiarists" section of VGtM which goes into further detail than the snippet i pulled out of it. On the other side, i agree with you, making a deck copy without a magical inclination would be impossible. As a side note, I think one deck is scary enough, lol. My original thought was more in line with my character, a kenku warlock of the great old one, searching for knowledge. The thought would be is if he got his hands on one of the skill tomes he would be duplicating it in the name of the old one. But the power fades in a single book for a full century, therefore the magic would need to be duplicated as well. Beyond that, yeah crafting duplicate rings and general metalwork would be beyond the scope of my characters strength (8).
