So I don't know why I continue to think this but I'm under the impression that an arcane focus only replaces one specific component. Like an orb that is coated in a thin layer of bat guano lets you use fireball because the component is a part of the orb. And if it's all, what is even the point of components even being listed? My DM gives a lot of us a huge pass on most component things because it's a bit of a hassle but I'd like to be clear if I ever do any other groups.

You only lose if you die. Any time else, there's opportunity for a come back.
The focus replaces any materials that don't have a monetary value subscribed to them by RAW.
As a house rule however I let characters make (or buy) more elaborate focuses that have a value attached to them as a substitute for non-consumed materials (like the diamond for Chromatic orb or Pearl for Identify). Typically speaking it costs them 2-3 times the gold cost (a 100gp pearl needing a 200-300gp focus) for the focus, but has the benefit of being useful for any spell requiring up to that value (eg. the 300gp focus working for chromatic orb, identify and any other spell needing up to a 100gp value component). As a bonus players often come up with very personalised focus designs in the process.

That's a cool idea! I'm so gonna steal that :P
anyway, yes it replaces all material components that don't have a monetary value and is not consumed. Pretty straightforward :) The whole idea of components is flavor based and also that you need a free hand in order to hold the component. It also allows for pretty cool stories: say your sorcerer is put in a prison and needs an escape. His material components/focus are/is taken away from him. Then, suddenly, he realises that the prison houses a small group of bats. For a couple of days he collects their guano without the guards noticing, when BOOM he is able to cast his fireball. I'm also not that organised in order to take all components into account XD I forget what my players need and can use all the time :p

I have a tiefling warlock who lost his eye and replaced it with a valuable ruby and uses it as his orb needed for clairvoyance.

A focus/pouch also can't substitute for a material that's consumed, whether it has a value or not.
