Quick question for newish DM - Do shields count as light armor or do they require separate proficiency to gain the AC?
They require a separate proficiency. If anything, they'd be Medium Armor (with 2014 rules, at least; in 2024 they'd probably be Light), so if you want, you could rule it that way. But in most situations, they are a separate type of armor.
