So I've got a player that started off as artificer, but couldn't quite get the class.
Just for giggles, he was disappointed that the firearm I gave him at lv1 was a musket (d12+dex) and not an assualt rifle (2d10+dex). He was very convinced that the musket has really bad damage. Not sure how to explain that its basically the best weapon in the game.
Anyway, he wants to switch his character into a Warlock, but he wants to keep the blacksmith style inventor character. He's taken most of the same tool proficiencies, but I'm unsure of how his now low int will effect their use. What kind of rolls should be called for?

Quite a few of the tools use something other than Int anyway, Smith's/Tinkerer's are Str/Dex for example. And as a DM you can always change it if you think another stat would work well, I for example have a character that uses Int for Navigator's tools.
How about seeing if your player would like to "do a Percy" (apologies for the crit role reference) and play a fighter/gunslinger and then take spell casting feats to buff up the character with a warlock-style. Link to Fighter/Gunslinger here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/10-fighter#Gunslinger
Gunslinger gives them a few more fire arm options and the fighters multiple attacks at higher levels may well give them the extra bang for their buck they are yearning for.

If he wanted to be doing an AVERAGE of 11 + DEX per attack at first level (with spellcasting!), and he's complaining about only doing 6.5 + DEX, I'd tell him to get stuffed. Point out the list of weapons in the PHB. The best possible weapons are 2d6 (7) + mod. The best cantrip does 1d10 at level 1. 2d10 + DEX at level 1 is very out of line. Besides, it's important to have something to aspire to. Am assault rifle isn't in the PHB for a reason, it's something DM's to decide whether it fits their campaign or not.
