Well we have used the current version in actual play and it slaughters things on a massive scale. It isn't a white room for us. In actual play CME is broken as hell in my actual experience, even without bard shenanigans. And without multiclassing the warlock does not have a strong melee option. Personal opinion but we don't like the wizard out single target damaging everyone at the table in boss encounters.
If your wizard is consistently that close to the boss/fight and isn’t taking enough damage to lose the spell or go down, I have questions about how the fights are being designed and run.

Even dumb monsters are usually smart enough to attack the thing doing the most damage to it. And most monsters at those levels have multu attack with decent damage. So wizard does big damage to boss. Boss does a multu attack against wizard. Each attack forces a concentration save (which wizards dont have proficiency in) and takes a big chunk out of the wizards meager hit pounts (which is a lot fewer compared to tanky martials). Not to mention wizards dont have armor proficiencies and mage armor is dependent on dex.
I would wonder if the dm doesnt know how to play monsters correctly, or maybe the dm is taking it easy on the wizard for some out of game reason, or the wizard starts with a level in fighter to get medium armor and con save proficiencies and maxed int and con, set dex to 14, and dumped str, wis, and cha? Even then, wizards and single target damage generally do not overlap.
