There's a character in my party that is part of a cult as part of his backstory, but has been ordered to travel the world to spread it's wisdom.
I am the Cleric of this party, and I have the Augury spell. Our party, including the cultist, do not know if his cult god is real or not.
Here's my question:
If I use Augury to see if I can persuade him to pray to his god and prove the deity's existence. Praying to the god will not cause him any trouble whatsoever and he will accept the offer.
Since he is part of a cult to this god, if he is real, there is only a 95% failure chance, according to our DM.
If I receive the Indifference omen, does this mean that the god doesn't exist, or that gods are so unpredictable even Augury cannot predict their movements accurately?
Also, the goal is out of scope for Augury. You're restricted to asking about a course of action, not a general question. You're asking if praying to the god is going to produce good or bad results, and the answer is likely to be "no".
And, were you to later use a different divination spell where it is in scope, you're likely to find that this is the sort of question that the DM doesn't want to let you short-circuit, and the spell will fail or give ambiguous answers, as they are wont to do.

That really sounds like a question for your DM.
