It's also unnecessary for the Wall of Sand spell to tell me that a wall of non-transparent material blocks line of sight, but it does. Sometimes the game likes to state the obvious.
Given that wall of sand does not block movement, it's a cloud of sand suspended in the air. There is no guarantee that such a cloud is opaque, most sand clouds, unless extremely thick, are not (this also applies to most fog clouds), and thus specifying that it's opaque is in fact necessary.
In any case, my point was that that you asked whether shadow of moil blocks your vision, and the answer is "no, because it specifically says you're not affected", and thus it's not an example to prove that the developers intended it to be possible to see out of heavily obscured areas.
I hope the GM isn't confused by the pile of opinions.
In a good universe, I'd understand all of them. We do not live in the good universe.
That being said, I'll check my DMG + PHB once I regain access to them (can't currently coz I'm hiking and camping this week) and with the help (?) of the 48 replies in this thread bickering over obscure phrasing, I'll figure out how the nine hells Heavily Obscured, Blinded and LoS work together
Thx to everyone for the advice btw
Might try contacting wotc if there is enough opinions/thoughts around this. I don't expect it to work but who knows, there's a 5% chance I roll a nat 20 on my investigation check

Good luck with that, it's been a mess since 2014. It's not quite as hot a topic as asking how stealth actually works in 2024, but it's still a perennial.
Because you can see out of a heavily obscured area unless there is a visual effect that blocks your vision, like fog or dense foliage. Makes sense.

The Wall of Sand block line of sight likely because the swirling sand is compact enought to not see through.
Wall of sand blocks line of sight because the spell says it blocks line of sight.
It does indeed but narratively its how i'd describe it.

If Sage Advice could clarify the most debated subjects of Heavily Obscured, Hide, Nick etc once and for all it would be really appreciated.
