Hi, can anyone clarify the bonuses for "Two Weapon Fighting" for fighters when the Fighting Style "Two Weapon Fighting" is chosen? When using the "off hand" bonus action with a short sword (light, finesse) would you get the +2 proficiency bonus at first level fighter to determine the to hit bonus? Example: Dex 14 is +2/+2 hit/dmg (finesse) with short sword, and additionally +2 to hit for being proficient for a total of +4/+2 hit/dmg?
Page 195 in combat it says no ability modifier to damage maybe be applied, but on page 72 under fighting styles for fighters (only) the modifier is allowed.
I have talked to a number of experienced DM's about the bonus +2 for 1st level fighter proficiency and some say yes and some say no. No being based on the belief that you are not proficient with the off hand weapons.
When using the two-weapon fighting without the two-weapon fighting style, it is only the damage roll that is affected. You don't get to add the ability modifier (The DEX modifier in your case) to the damage roll of the weapon used as the bonus action.
With the style, you get to add the ability modifier to the damage roll.
In both cases, the attack roll gets the same bonus: ability modifier + proficiency bonus.
Thanks for the quick reply. That makes sense to me. Since the fighter took "Two Weapon Fighting" then he/she is proficient.
Any character can use a weapon in the off hand with the Light property and use a bonus action to attack with it. If they're proficient, they'll add their proficiency bonus to the attack roll. However, the base rule declares that such attacks don't get the appropriate modifier bonus (STR or Dex depending on weapon properties).
The Two Weapon Fighting Style removes that penalty, and the Dual Wielder feat removes the "must be Light" requirement as well as some other bonuses.
