Somewhere along the line I recently either read or heard about imposing a penalty on characters who don't remove their armor before they rest. I'm about to begin running a new campaign and I am planning to bring in a lot of the optional rules which make things more realistic and challenging. I'm not finding anything in the DnD Beyond search regarding this so I'm guessing it might be an old rule (probably 3.5?) but I'd really like to find it. I'm thinking maybe a level of exhaustion per night resting like so.
Does anyone know where this is mentioned, if mentioned at all?
They really toned down the adverse effects of sleeping in armor (I assume from my experience of 1 session of pathfinder before starting 5e). It doesn't affect health, spell slot, or limited use feature recovery.
The XGtE optional rules half hit dice recovery and prevent exhaustion reduction, and I just role play it as being uncomfortable. Races and classes that don't need to sleep are probably exempt from these penalties (I'd probably still require an elf to strip to meditate comfortably though).

Not needing sleep isn't the same as not needing rest.

True, but a character who can take a long rest without sleeping probably won't experience the downsides of "sleeping in armor" anymore than they would if it had been a short rest.
When I first started to play DnD way back in 1982 there was a wilderness handbook and mountaineers handbook. I think it has rules on sleeping in armor. I'll dig them out and take a look.
I know this is a old post and u probably have the answer. I got here looking for something similar and figured I would go ahead and answer

I am not aware of any such rule within the 5th edition D&D rulebooks. :)
The rules for resting can be found in the Player's Handbook:

There are optional rules in XGtE.
