Hey guys. I have a Paladin Rogue that I am working with and want to know if sneak attack and divine smite could be use simultaneously. Like if you land your attack with a rapier could you expend a spell slot to deal the radiant damage? Sorry of this a dumb question, but I have been looking everywhere for a 5E answer and I have come up short every time.
Sneak Attack Beginning at 1st level, you know how to strike subtly and exploit a foe's distraction. Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack if you have advantage on the attack roll. The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon. You don't need advantage on the attack roll if another enemy of the target is within 5 feet of it, that enemy isn't incapacitated, and you don't have disadvantage on the attack roll.
Divine Smite Starting at 2nd level, when you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you can expend one paladin spell slot to deal radiant damage to the target, in addition to the weapon's damage. The extra damage is 2d8 for a 1st-level spell slot, plus 1d8 for each spell level higher than 1st, to a maximum of 5d8. The damage increases by 1d8 if the target is an undead or a fiend.
As Trirhabda said, it just has to fulfill the requirements, which in this case does not even require the attack action.
So it could be an attack action, a two weapon fighting bonus action, an attack of opportunity reaction, or a spell action that includes a weapon attack.

Yup, you can do both on the same attack - there's nothing preventing that, as far as I am aware!

It just has to fulfill the requirements of both abilities.
i.e. Melee weapon attack with a finesse weapon. Advantage or another enemy of target within 5’ of target

It could even stack with thunderous smite and booming blade.
