ok ok, so I was in my campaign about an hour ago, and e are fighting a huge boss. There is a fighter, ranger/druid, barbarian, and me, a wizard. We are all level 3. So we are designed to lose this fight, but be able to move on after it. Unfortunately, my character is at deaths door.
I have 1hp, and a giant sword looming over me
I have used all my second level spell slots (NO MISTY ESCAPE) and I have 1 1st level spell slot left.
The spells I can cast are Mage Armor, Magic Missile, and False Life. The cantrips I have are Fire Bolt, Prestigitation, Sword Burst, and Mage Hand.
I have had one of my arms cut off.
I have 2 daggers (not out).
Allies are to far away to help.
I am able to self detonate, allowing my allies to escape (the DM said I could).
The DM said I have until next session (1 week from now) to decide if I want to sacrifice my character to allow the others to escape. I NEED HELP TRYING TO GET OUT OF THIS SITUATION. HELP.
Also next session we have a cleric coming in, so if I decide to explode my self, what class should I be? I like blasting, but that's what my poor 'o'wizard did, and can't stand to make another blaster now.
Cast mage armor and cross your fingers for a lousy roll from the DM. If it goes a little badly, you drop unconscious, the ranger/druid pops healing spirit on top of you, and you're back up and ready to go. If it goes really badly, the massive sword does more than you max HP +1, and you're insta-dead. Your friends could still take your body to a cleric to be raised if they don't dawdle around.
When you say sword looming over you, I imagine it attached to a person, as opposed to a trap or magical effect, which would change the equation. Assuming that’s it, I’d hit him with a magic missle With a certain finger extended to show him what you think of him. He swings at you, he might miss. If not, odds are you drop to zero. Then let that cleric come in and save you. Or, try to use the environment against him. Fire bolt or MM the ceiling over his head and hope the rubble he’s buried under is enough of a distraction for you to get away.
The cleric isn't currently part of the party right now, and mage armor is already cast on me (AC 16), but, I'm probably considered prone though... and as I said, even with false life, he could kill me. I was thinking distraction? *cursing myself for not having minor illusion rn*
If you already have Mage Armor on, then I'd say just run for it. Disengage is OK if your ranger/druid can hit the boss with entangle or snare to keep him from just catching you on the next turn. Otherwise I'd risk the attack of opportunity, use your action to dash, and let the ranger/druid revive you with cure wounds, healing word, or healing spirit if needed. If you manage to evade the Opportunity attack on the first turn, hit yourself with False Life and keep running. Fighter and Barbarian should be running back in to block the guy long enough for you to get clear. (Particularly the barbarian with the rage damage reduction.)
I'm an abjuration wizard, so I could cast mage armor (to no effect) then get my arcane ward going. That would be 12 temp hit points, more then false life can provide (8 max)

That sounds like a good move. Just a note, Arcane Ward doesn't give you temp HP, technically, so it can stack with the temp HP from False Life.. If you survive to the next round to cast it, of course. If you think your Arcane Ward can save you from one hit, I would suggest casting Mage Armor then getting up and moving as far away as possible.

Stand for half your movement, then Dodge action to give disadvantage on their attack(s). If you're feeling lucky you could use the other half of your movement and pray the Dodge action saves you.

No. Don’t move too.
that gives an Opportunity attack. And then no disadvantage on their normal attack.

just stand and dodge and pray.
Fair about not baiting an extra attack, but the disadvantage remains assuming they don't get hit by the Aoo and get knocked out, dodge lasts until the start of the users next turn https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Dodge

D&D is a game for nerds... so I guess I'm one :p
Also next session we have a cleric coming in, so if I decide to explode my self, what class should I be? I like blasting, but that's what my poor 'o'wizard did, and can't stand to make another blaster now.

If nobody has a turn between you and Mr. Sword, I'd say to take the mage armor suggestion and then RUN.
Run: He takes a swing at you and either you're unconscious or running away.
Don't run: He takes a swing at you and either you're unconscious or still a sitting duck right next to Mr. Sword.
If you can get some healing afterward, great.
If the damage from the next hit will instakill you will it if you also have the bonus hp from false life?
Or disengage and run...
I'd like to change my vote to disengage and run. Whatever keeps you standing right now.

Oof, the ranger/druid has NONE of those spells (he doesn't know how to play the combo yet)

Wait I just realized we won't have our normal D&D session because of veterans day, so I have 2 weeks now to decide

Are you using inspiration points, and of so do you have any available? That could help a lot.

Fair enough. But yeah. 1/2 is much better than 1/2 2x
