My group and me (I´m the DM) startet playing Aborea (Rules etc. from a RPG like D&D from Germany) but we now want to switch to D&D.
I bought all official Books of the 5th Edition and read the DM Guide, the Player´s Handbook etc.
But now I have something I dont quite understand. The "Stroy Arc" of Tyranny of Dragons lets the Characters become level 15 at the End of it. So they are overleveld for almost all the other official Adventures (what I read about on the Internet)
How do you handle this. Do you always make new Characters for each Story or do I miss something? If I would let them play their lvl 15 Charcters in "The Curse of Strahd" they would be ridicolously overleveled. I mean I could adjust the monsters etc. but it would take a buttload of time to do so?
Soooooo. How do you guys handle this?
Thanks for your responses and help and sry for grammar mistakes you might find :) Greetings from Austria :D
Indeed, in adventures like Tyranny of Dragons and Princes of Apocalypse, there are few chances to keep the characters. One possibility would be to run Tomb of Horros, from Tales of the Yawming Portal (which is supposed to be for tier 4 (17-20 level).
In other published adventurers there are more chances to keep the charcters. For example, Curse of Strhad and Storm King's Thunder take the characters at level 11 and from there you can go in the middle of Out of the abyss or Rise of Tiamat (adjusting a bit the timeline) and finish those.
If you wanted to follow the story at high level you can, but obviously all combat encounters will not be out of the box ready to go. You can either change the monsters or modify them for higher level character (explained on p. 273-279 of the DMG)
It's more about how much your want to modify an adventure designed for level 1-15 to start around 15
Yeah i thought about that. I will wait and see how long each book takes. if its only 5-6 Sessions of 5h i will mod them.... dont want them to rush from 1 char to another
