In regards to healing, that is. First here is the description:
While you wear this pendant, you stabilize whenever you are dying at the start of your turn. In addition, whenever you roll a Hit Die to regain hit points, double the number of hit points it restores.
For example lets say a cleric normally healing 1d8+5 with Cure Wounds. Does that mean that if a cleric casts Cure Wounds on someone wearing (and attuned to) the Periapt it would heal 2d8+5?
I’ve never really understood the distinction between “hit die” and just “die”
Of course, this is ultimately up to my DM but I’d just like to know what the standard rule for this would be. Sorry if this is a really noob question. I've been playing for a while but I'm not a technical rules guy.
Hit dice are specific things. You can spend them to heal during a short rest. Cure Wounds doesn't involve spending hit dice, so the periapt won't affect its healing.
Each charatcer has a number of 'Hit Dice' they can use on a Short Rest - this equals 1 for each level they have. Lets say you are a 5th level Fighter, you would have 5d10 as your Hit Dice. During a short rest you could choose to spend some (adding yoru con mod to each roll) to see the healing that you gain during the short rest.

Rolling Hit Die to regain hit points is a feature when you take a Short Rest - https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#ShortRest
