question, the description of Grease spell says it covers a 10 foot square, 4 squares on a grid, and the stat block says 60ft/10ft sq.
Shatter says it covers a 10 ft radius sphere centered on the point so it would cover 16 squares on a grid (only portion of squares at the corners) but the stat block says the same 60ft/10ft sphere. makes me confused if all spheres are radius or not as the stat block makes it seem its only 10 diameter.
Do I have this right that shatter covers 16 squares on a grid?
The size of an area depends on the shape of the area. Squares and cubes are almost always described along their side length, while circles and spheres are almost always described along their radius. This means that a square of area 10 ft. is a lot smaller than a circle of area 10 ft. due to the difference in how they're measured.
I can't speak for exactly how many squares Shatter would cover, but I don't think it's 16 as that would be a square in which you could fit a radius 10 ft. circle, so the area would most certainly be smaller.

On a grid, it does at least partially cover 16 squares.
Isn't the rule that a square counts if the center spot is covered? I don't use grids that often so I can't recall the exact rule
I have no idea actually, we don’t use grids or minis or any of that at all. But even still I believe that would count as covering 16 squares. Pretty close at any rate. I think it would only really change once you hit 15’ radius or larger. Algebra I was not so good at, geometry I was better at.
It means that grease covers a 10 foot square, (on a grid that's four squares, 2x2) and that you can place it (the center of that 10x10 area) up to 60 feet away from you. And yes, shatter at a 10 foot radius, would cover a 4x4 area, so 16 squares. Personally, I think that's got to be a typo and they mean 10 foot diameter, since that's huge for a level 2 spell, but it's been around for ages without being erratta'd, so, probably I'm wrong.

Chapter 10 of the DMG states that a square is affected if half of the square is covered by the effect. (So basically, same thing.) For a spell like shatter, although 16 squares are "touched" by the AoE, only 12 are affected by the spell. The squares at the very corners are only barely hit, not enough to apply the effects of the spell using the half rule in the DMG.
Thank you for the clarification. Like I said, my groups don’t use grids so I have never had much reason to know where to find that answer. I appreciate the information.
A 10 ft square is exactly a 10 ft x 10 ft. square.
A 10 ft sphere has a RADIUS of 10 ft, not a diameter. The diameter is 20 ft, so it covers most of a 20 ft x 20 ft square, which is four 5 ft squares on each side, and 4x4=16

Yes, “most of” being the operative word there. Because of the way “most of” apparently gets calculated, the four corners of that 4x4 aren’t covered enough to count, so it is (4x4)-4=12

I did understand the differences between the square and sphere but if you just looked at the stat block and not the spell description they are identical in range/area except for the icon for squares and spheres
I wasn’t sure if spheres were 100% described as radius or not diameter thrown in here or there.

From what I can tell, the sphere icon is only used on radius AoE's. I searched all the spells that have a diameter AoE in the spell listing, and they do not use the sphere icon. (They just have the range listed) When I search all spells with "radius" effects, they have the sphere.

It's not huge for a 2nd level spell, it's huge for a 1st level and small for a 3rd level, so right were second level belongs. The damage of shatter is comparable to an upcast first level spell, so that radius is one of the main things it has going for it (aside from thunder damage and the creatures that get disadvantage on its save, so you know, earth elemental killing, despite their strong con save)

Shatter is 1/2 the radius of Fireball by design.
And ya gotta love the non-Euclidean geometry of D&D on a grid.
