ok, i have been wondering for a long time if, when using Magic Jar you would be able to permanently possess say an ancient red dragon or something similar, maybe even a tarrasque, i have probably misread something and am completely wrong but i would really love to know. Also, if it is that good, then do you think it should be pushed above 6th level.

Haha, here's an idea. It would require a partner though.
Get partner to Polymorph said creature into a humanoid.
You possess newly formed humanoid.
Partner releases Polymorph!
Profit.
You would need the 9th level True Polymorph, because Polymorph is limited to Beasts and doesn't include any humanoids. And at that point you could just True Polymorph your ally into a dragon.
Yes. It's very, very useful if you get the right set up, or just cast it in a dungeon somewhere cut off from the rest of the world, but I would not say it's "OP". It's a high level spell, costs a bit of money, and isn't infallible.

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
true but if used correctly it is the only thing in the game that can give a player control of a monster with a CR above 20, surely that can't be a 6th level spell. (probably missed another spell or 2 that can but still)

I mean simulacrum is only 1 level higher and that literally makes another version of you. So magic jar seems to be the right level.

yeah but simulacrum is very hard to get and in most situations impractical, you could spend ages finding A. somewhere that snow won't melt for 12 hours and B. a ruby worth over 1500 GP. while magic jar is much easier to pull of, plus you can become an ancient red dragon without using any other spell slots.

Also remember magic jar requires the target to make a save. If you’re looking to get a high cr monster with it (like an ancient dragon) you are going to need to wear off their legendary resistance.

Magic Jar specifies it has to be a humanoid. So no you could not possess the mentioned creatures.

Or wait for a dragon to polymorph itself then use magic jar. Although that requires a lot of time. Your idea would work better though.

Correct, I should have specified True Polymorph.
Still, bypassing the magic jar and just polymorphing the ally takes all the fun out of the situation!
And limits you to a maximum of cr 20 so maybe polymorphing the big bad could be better since you could get a higher cr.
Ooh good point. Even true polymorph can't turn you into an ancient red dragon

(Not ancient red dragon. Has to be Metallic for the Shape Changing)

even better then, hey in that case you could maybe persuade one of them to give up their body

just cause they are "good" doesn't mean they would give away their soul for some pathetic adventurers to use ;)
