First-ever character, when three of the five of us had never played before and the other two didn't have a lot of experience with the rules - or character optimization - was a Lawful Good Variant Aasimar Paladin with 8 STR, among other ability score problems. His name was Lord Barbar Dingwall. I played him in a one-shot that turned into a three- (or maybe four?) shot.
My then-7-year-old brother's character, a Half-Elf Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer, reached 21 CHA at level 1. Also, he picked half-elf because the DM apparently said they were good, and sorcerer because the picture was cool.
We've learned a lot since then. Especially that when you see "randomly increases one ability" in some homebrew one-shot you found online, don't have the player roll a d6 to determine the score and then increase it by 1d4 (the sorcerer, of course, rolled 6 and 4). And that you shouldn't let level 3 characters roll on magic item tables that include belts of storm giant strength - which, of course, my paladin got.
'Twas a lot of fun, though our characters' balance was questionable.

First character i made was an elf rogue, urchin who i never played and whose name i forgot
first character i played was aralia, my profile pic and name, a tiefling rogue who would use essence of ether to knock people out and then steal everything off of them including their clothes then sell it to buy and make more essence of ether.
I know that I dmed before i played(also it was homebrew adventure) which gave me more experience but we still did not know balance at all or have a good understanding of the rules.
Not sure which was actually first now - this was back in ‘79 - Goffannon Kanar CN “Eladrin” ( grey elf) fighter/mage, Mordant Erreint a NG human Fighter with 18+ strength and his brother Llaw Erreint a NG human Ranger. Goffannon and Llaw are still around both as epic level characters now in play only as NPCS in my campaign world. MOrdant died of old age but as an very wealthy epic level NPC.
my first character was for AD&D in the 90s: a psionic human with a mercifully forgotten name and backstory. i think i had powers for tough skin and throwing around pebbles. i remember sooo looking forward to magnetizing someone's metal armor. man, oh, man did i spend hours and days trying to prepare for every contingency. it turned out, however, that our DM was less about puzzles and more of the "my marry sue takes all the gold! rocks fall, everyone else dies!" variety. so, what's a nerd to do? mow some lawns and buy my own DMG, of course!
learning nothing from my first DM (or too much, depending on how you look at it) my pet NPC was a beautiful and strong were-tiger lycanthrope with bracers of brachiation. I think we made it about half way down the first hallway of a dungeon before the druid fell in love with a knothole in an oak tree, the paladin left to seduce a barmaid, his friend the necromancer had broken his magic greatsword checking a random chest for traps, and the elf rogue's character hid so well we couldn't even find the player. by the time the second session rolled around i'd decided i had a handle on just what we were missing: not enough Dark Sun.

unhappy at the way in which we lost individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?

The first character I ever *thought of* before I started playing, before I even Knew How to build a character, was an unnamed Half-Elf Rogue/Cleric, who’d pulled off a huge heist, and then went into hiding in a temple, learning some basic cleric-y stuff while there, and then leaving the temple still under cover as a cleric while trying to hide from authorities
the first character I actually PLAYED was named Chlora Fille and she was a -1INT Tiefling Ranger (1st level) who was completely green and wore all green clothing, and I only got to play her for one session of what was supposed to be a full campaign because the DM joined the school musical and didn’t have time for dnd anymore, so I ended up starting up a new campaign to dm myself. Fun times… :]
My first character was quite mediocre tbh. A moon elf sorcer, background feylost. Loved playing with it, did a 3 day straight DnD campaign with my friends, that's still going on (they take forever!). When we last left, we were busy trying to become the tyrannical rulers of the world.
My first character I played was an Elf in Basic (Red box)...remember classes such as Elf, Dwarf and Halfling existed. His name was Zach because I thought that was an acceptable Elf name. When we started playing Advanced I made a Half-Elven Cavalier (from the Unearthed Arcana book) and named him...Zach.
My first was a Half-elf thief pre-generated by the DM. He lasted 2 or 3 rounds then died. We played AD&D (1e) it was some crazy homebrew Tomb of Horrors type dungeon, the general idea was some kind of dungeon raid with wandering monsters roaming. The long time players had high level characters and the 4 new players were "hired on to assist the intrepid heroes haul their riches home." This was back in the day where high level characters would attract the attention of lower level followers, and that was the 3 other new players and me. We couldn't come back to the main table until we made new characters. Our Leaders, the players running their high level characters had to assist us with our new character build. They had multiple NPC followers to run as well as their main character and the DM would skip them if they weren't ready on their turn. PC followers were also allowed to do more than NPC followers so it was advantageous to get back quickly. My Leader told me to "roll new stats then just copy everything from my old sheet". So my second character was also a Half-elf thief. (With a cooler name and better picture)

First level human cleric. The only other thing I remember about it, or the campaign was, "What, that's all the magic I do?" That was the summer of 1976. Before that day, I hadn't even heard of the game before.
1990 or 1991 I think a blonde haired human fighter named Axl Rows. I was about ten years old. The second one was Midget Merlin, a gnome illusionist, I was fascinated by gnomes from that day onwards.
During a break in TTRPGs I read in a 3.5 book that dragonborns were created from a Gnome and a Dragon falling in love, and having children. Although I cannot recall the specific book. So its hard to retrace that information.
Later on in 4th ed I created a red dragonborn cleric called Xrose. He met his end, after adventuring with the Fury Collective. I believe in Gardmore Abbey, ironically, DM bribes don't work as I gifted the DM that adventure for him to run for us.
5ed I created Xrose, an assimar and reincarnation of Xrose, in a young girls body. She was a captive of the Netherese who took her from Helms Hold but escaped to later escape a group of werewolves around Conyberry. She later escaped any involvement till she arrived where Volothamp Geddarm was present in Phandalin, thats where Xrose started adventuring again, although I never really played her... My go to character was Lia'Vael Arpiir a Legendary Fighter/Mage/Thief and Gatigo and homestead Hill Dwarf Cleric.
Perhaps I should start Xrose off again as I am playing in a new D&D game next Thursday at the local board game cafe. Although I am running a homebrew campaign set on another world, I haven't been a player in a D&D game for at least three years now.
Hi! I just wanted to know, what was your first D&D character? I think it would be interesting to know.
Ok... well this is a multi-parter.
1st ever was a pre-made elf mage (No idea what I was doing)- 1980s jr High chess club (D&D game)
However Honestly that was a one session character, and not really what I consider my Frist true D&D character.
My First TTRPG Character that I rolled up stats for, while in the USMC (1990) was a Solo in CP2020. No idea what his name was. It wasn't a big campaign and I am sad we never did more.
In 1999/2000 after college, and starting a career, I went to a Hobby Shop in the OC, CA (Darkstar Comics) once again a Premade Elf-Mage, once again totally clueless, and this time I fireballed the party. Opps.
My first true D&D character I rolled was a Half-Elf Kensai AD&D (2001) the game got cancelled before we played due to an event that happened the week we were going to start. You can guess what even in 2001.
So... lets start again, my first AD&D character that I rolled up was a Elf Psion Named Gilbert Alfhiem in January 2002 , died in session 2... (yammit)
Ok, my real 1st Character April 2002... Full complete campaign. While working as a Manager in a Table Top Retail Store that specialized in Warhammer and Magic.
Was my AD&D Valley Elf (Grey Hawk) War-Wizard Kit (Fighter-Mage) She was LE, somehow an evil campaign. In the end, she was the last one standing on the boss-fight, with 1HP left, so she drank a Potion guarded by the succubus villain, which turned her into a succubus. I refuse to share her name, because I was a bit of an airhead, and named her something inappropriate without being aware what I was saying, and people were very clearly laughing behind my back, and I couldn't figure out the joke. I thought the name sounded very ephemeral like an elf. And it was based on my favorite soda at the time spelled backwards, you know the one in the red can with the curvy letters and ...yeah read that label backwards, it's NSFW. /facepalm.
I've remade most of these characters in MMOs and other D&D games, I changed their names clearly. The Valley Elf became Mariel, Mary Hell, Marhielle, and many similar names, Gilbert became Gail as she was Trans like me... and the other two became a part of Mariel's backstory, and the Solo from CP2020 became Moretoes my Orc fighter....or Tiefling Paladin.

The first Dnd character I played was a Elven beastmaster with a pteranadon as an animal companion. Most of the character was made by someone else though, and I just made the major decisions like race, class, animal companion, etc. I had no idea how to play and was extremely paranoid and cautious because I had read enough of Dnd lore to know that practically anything and everything you meet could try to kill you. I also had no idea how to roleplay but he was still fun to play.
The first Dnd character that I made myself was a Dragonborn Fathomless Warlock named Shekar Tolrost. He was really just an adventuring sailor looking for excitement but he was also really fun to play. I was just using him for a one-shot but I may try to use him again.

Lyria Adagio - Dwarf Bard
I remember looking at the Bard class, and going: “Neat! They make magic by playing the guitar!”
And then I saw that Dwarves were an option, and I was like: “Sweet! Dwarves are awesome!”
Just that simple.
i just joined the game, and i have no idea what to do.
so I guess my current one :)
