You were a warrior who fell on the battlefield. A Valkyrie arrives to escort you away to the next stage life. You steal a kiss from the Valkyrie causing them to drop you. You awake, seeing the dead on the battle feild.
Or fell in love with a valkyrie and are doing your best to find them again after your first encounter.

The “stolen kiss” bit screams rogue, or maybe bard. But rogues are a bit more warrior-esque, so that’s what I’d pick if I were you.
Yeah I like the Spirits Bard or the Phantom Rogue for this, but also consider:
The kiss accidentally sealed some magical pact - you're a celestial warlock, with a crush on your celestial patron. Not much in the way of the "standard" warrior type, but you can make a melee celestial warlock work somewhat.
It could possibly be Barbarian with either Path of Ancestral Guardian or Zealot, one way you fight with your fallen comrades, the other you've come back as a chosen of the gods.

* Need a character idea? Search for "Rob76's Unused" in the Story and Lore section.
Keep in mind you can just take the Soldier background to represent having been part of an army; your actual class doesn't have to be explicitly martial. Armies need healers (clerics), scouts (rogues) and other support too

Active characters:
Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
The kiss accidentally sealed some magical pact - you're a celestial warlock, with a crush on your celestial patron.
LOVE THIS IDEA!
I'd also throw in a fun path from Mythic Odyssey of Theros - You could add in the Peity system from the book and have the Valkrye offer the powers and goals from Iroas (honor & victory in war). The character was so bold (with the kiss) that the Valkrye offered them a second chance at being a great hero in battle!
Have to say Celestial Warlock was the first thing that sprang to mind for me too but you could also maybe do a similar thing with Divine Soul Sorcerer if you prefer that mechanically and say your death and encounter with the valkari changed you on a genetic level
Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
Or possibly the Undead; after all, valkyries are psychopomps and you just came back from the dead.
It could possibly be Barbarian with either Path of Ancestral Guardian or Zealot, one way you fight with your fallen comrades, the other you've come back as a chosen of the gods.
These are all great ideas thank you!
