I was wondering about how much more food an average tiefling would need than an average human. This is assuming a tail length of 4 feet and a tail radius of 2 inches. I don't know why I'm asking, but it got into my head and I can't stop thinking about it.
I think a Tiefling would only have to eat a bit more than a Human would, when you think about and I quote from the Players Handbook
"Tieflings are about the same size and build as humans."
That would mean they would only need another couple Kilograms of food.

REMEMBER: Wizards Of The Coast does not own DDB, they are two different companies. When you buy a physical book, WotC receives the money you bought it for, not DDB and vice versa. If you want a digital key to get an online book for free because you have the hardcopy book then DDB makes no money because you don't buy off DDB you buy off WotC, so please stop making threads about this issue. DDB needs money to continue helping people and servers aren't cheap.
Assuming a conical tail, with a 2” radius and a 48” (4’) length you get a volume of ≈ 201 cubic inches
201 in^3 x .544 oz/in^3 (average density of a human body per cubic inch) ≈ 117 oz
117 oz ≈ 7.5 Lbs
How much more does someone who weighs 7.5 Lb more than you need to eat?
Nothing more really, I guess just another snack or something like that.

They probably store fat backups in the tail, so they shouldn't to eat more on average days. Might be able to go on half rations for a bit if needed... they are geckos right :)

You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."

Don't be boring. This entire line of questioning is thoroughly interesting. I am now off to calculate how many extra Goodberries my Satyr PC has to eat to be fully nourished due to her horns.

Don't forget to factor in the increased body hair on her legs.

Tiefling? How much more does my Path of the Totem Goliath Barbarian eat compared to my Halfling Rogue? Thanks to the magic of the planes... THEY EAT THE SAME! Sadly, the Halfling Rogue has to go hungry on longer trips because he can't carry as much.... because, Rations! And when it comes to Rations, the Halfling eats a veritable buffet every day without gaining weight... while the Barbarian eats a single snack that doesn't even fill his palm and doesn't go hungry. So, a lot of this is based on how you want to look at it.

My characters are:
I'm pretty sure Tiefling tails detach at night and hunt for their own food while the body sleeps...
Not enough to bother driving yourself insane trying to find it out.
"Ignorance is bliss, and you look absolutely miserable."
I always view Tieflings as having a slighter build than humans, so the extra weight is in their tail. So total mass remains the same.
I would say that the tail requires an entire cow at least once per day or it detaches and finds someone else to attach itself to.

Assuming a conical follicle, with a .0002” radius and a .0048” you get a volume of ≈ 2.01 x 10^-10 cubic inches
2.01 x 10^-10 x .544 oz/in^3 (average density of a human body per cubic inch) ≈ 1.11 x 10^-10 oz/hair
1.11 x 10^-10 oz/hair x 1.054 x 10^12 (hairs on a very hairy leg) ≈ 117 oz
117 oz ≈ 7.5 Lbs

I think helish magic gives the tail all the energy it needs.
That Guy: They only need one pound of food each day, like every character, according to the PH.
Me: How could you only eat one lb. of food each day? I would starve!

Obviously, a goliath barbarian has a far more efficient metabolism than a halfling rogue and thus requires less food relative to their body size.
