Hey all, figured I'd try to ask here in the hopes of getting some help. I consider myself a amateur DM and still have plenty to learn. I have watch and read many lore subjects for D&D to better understand and flesh out my world.
Currently I have been running a campaign based in Faerûn and my party is moving towards a ancient Netherese outpost that is being excavated by one of my antagonists. The outpost I have in mind is meant to be a sort of ancient research or location to test magic and items from the time of Netheril. I have wanted to have a powerful magic item or device that survived the fall of the Empire and would have ties to the Netherese, yet have struggled finding/thinking of items related to such a civilization.
If anyone has any examples, ideas, or places I could go to find such information, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thank you!
Do you have a specific theme? The Netherese created pretty much everything imaginable, so how do you want to tie it back to the campaign? Are you looking for a McGuffin for the BBEG to be looking for? That's kind of my assumption, but what kind of goals does the BBEG have? He's be looking for an item that furthers those goals I would think.
Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
Bear in mind that after Ioulaum invented mythallars the Netherese largely abandoned making permanent magic items. If they consumed resources to make something permanent, it would have been spectacular, powerful and very expensive in their empire almost to the point of being considered unnecessary extravagant.
That piece of lore would compliment anything you decide to put in those ruins - you can introduce many items that used to be magical near a mythallar but are no more and among them there is an artifact worthy of its name.
Apologies for the delay! Been busy on my end, also thank you for the link! Its definitely helped give me some ideas!
But to answer your earlier question, yes I was wanting a McGuffin for the BBEG to be looking for. The item I have started to work on for the story is a compass/beacon to home in on a lost and magically hidden dungeon in a demiplane.
Also, thank you everyone for the feedback! It is really helped out a lot!

Rime of the Frostmaiden has some netherese magic inventions, spells, and magic items (abracadabrus and ythryn mythallar, for example).
