Not so much unpronounceable, but more so confusing and funny as I like to give names to npcs like "Who", "What", "Huh". And one I ripped from Earthworm Jim: Princess What's-Her-Name. Every now and then I get to get the players to partake in a "Who's on first"-like string of jokes.
I feel like I should include my drow ranger's name, "Gilli", because that's been my online nickname since 2003 and (english speaking) people keep mispronouncing it "Chilli". No, no, it's a hard G. Like in Good, Great, or Gill. (the origin of my nickname has nothing to do with gills tho xD)
I would never have even considered attempting to say that as Chilli. I mean - it's a G so how do people get to Ch?
No idea. People are weird.

Honestly, I have no idea, but so many people read it with a soft G (like in Gentle) and everytime I just sit there o__o° It's a hard G....
In a couple of European languages - from which English borrows heavily - a “g” before an “i” or an “e” has a soft pronunciation; like ‘gelato.’ If you want a hard sound, you follow it with an ‘h’; like ‘spaghetti,’ or maybe a ‘u,’ like ‘guitar.’
On the other hand, in other European languages - from which English also borrows heavily - it doesn’t work like that at all.
That’s probably the ultimate source of the confusion.
It would help me personally if actresses named Gillian could get together (nothing big, a simple Zoom call would be fine) and reach some kind of consensus among themselves, at least.

Hmm, think of names like Billy or Willy, just with a hard G?
I'm learning german and I speak french and english

That’s an amazing coincidence. You are PRECISELY the person to understand the point I was trying to make. If you start in Zurich, for instance, and drive along the lake, to Giessen, the people there might instinctively pronounce “Gilli” with a hard G; whereas, if you keep driving to Ticino, maybe to a lovely place called Giubiasco, they’ll probably be inclined to pronounce it with a soft G.
One of the things that many find vexing about English is that it never changes the spelling of any word it borrows from any language which already uses the Roman alphabet. So to really master spelling in English, you have to develop some unconscious facility with the spelling rules of French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Polish, Indonesian, Vietnamese ( anyone for pho? First person to pronounce it properly gets my secret recipe!) etc., etc. Otherwise, it’s all rote memorization.
AFAIK, there is no reliable mechanism for avoiding this confusion. If I tell you to put an H after the G, as in the Scottish word “ghillie” or “ gamekeeper” then your perfectly reasonable follow-up question will be “why don’t I pronounce THAT ‘gh’ like ‘laugh’ or ‘weigh?’” And I don’t have a good answer. It’s just an idiosyncrasy of the language.
The worst I ever threw out was "Dalrick Jedber Hedtwiss Nacklewocket" a gnome cleric who spoke in a high falsetto. It took me a couple of weeks or practicing saying the name so I could just roll right through the introduction. The party never really learned his name... it was said too fast and he would say the full thing any time someone asked. And mostly they laughed every time I spoke. Trying to do that voice now just kills my throat...

It's pronounced "fuh," I believe.

Gold star! I also would have accepted "fu-UH?" to reflect the rising tone. Sadly, I was bluffing and don't have a secret Phở recipe. The best I can tell you is to simmer the marrowbones for the broth at least 12 hours and toast your spices in a saucepan until they release their fragrance before you add them in.

Ah, too bad. Thanks for the advice, though! ;)

Yeah, so far no one has gotten it correct on their first try that I know of. It's pronounced "Thow-ray-uln."

Next time I name a character it will be a symbol, for one previously known as a Welsh name for Worcestershire sauce
